Your pool pump is almost certainly the most expensive thing to run in your backyard — often the second-biggest electricity draw in the entire house, behind only heating and cooling. The good news: a variable-speed pump does the exact same job for a fraction of the power, and since 2021 it’s what you’ll be buying anyway. This is a pound-for-pound guide to the best variable-speed pumps of 2026, with the one thing every other roundup leaves out: a calculator that shows what switching actually saves you.
How much could a variable-speed pump save you?
The pump is the biggest energy hog in your pool. A variable-speed pump moves the same water for a fraction of the power. Set your own numbers — the math updates live.
Estimate only — your rate, run time, and pump efficiency vary. The 70% is ENERGY STAR's figure for replacing an old single-speed pump, and field metering agrees: five Florida homes that swapped to variable speed averaged 68% (range 49–80%, Florida Solar Energy Center, 2016). It works because power falls steeply with speed — ideally with its cube, and in certified test data by about the 2.4 to 2.8 power. Against a new federal-minimum pump the saving is much smaller (ENERGY STAR: 20% in-ground). Single-speed wattage shown is typical motor input power, not nameplate HP. The annual figures assume a pump that runs every day of the year, which is the Florida norm this site is written for — if you close the pool for part of the year, scale the savings and stretch the payback by the months you actually run it.

Read the warranty column down, because it inverts the price order. Every pump on this page is bought online — that is the whole premise of the page — and the two pool majors charge you for it.
Pentair rates the SuperFlo VS and the WhisperFlo VST at two years. You do not get two years. Pentair’s own warranty page says it plainly: “Products purchased from the internet, including Authorized Pentair Online Resellers, receive a one-year parts only warranty from the date of purchase.” Labor is never covered on an internet purchase, and e-commerce units are shut out of the three-year bundle. The two-year figure belongs to a pump bought at a store and installed by a paid professional.
Hayward is not a penalty so much as a fork, and the tell is in the model number. Hayward splits its catalogue into Expert Line, “approved for sale only via brick-and-mortar locations”, and Open Line, “approved for sale online”, which “includes W3 Model #s”. The Hayward we card is a W3 SKU — W3SP3202VSP — so buying it online is legitimate and voids nothing, provided the seller is one Hayward authorizes (see the TriStar below). What you are buying is the shorter-warranty SKU: Hayward’s own spec table prints “Warranty - Parts: 1-year” and “Warranty - Labor: None”, and Hayward says Open Line coverage “does not increase when sold via brick-and-mortar location… or installed by a professional.” There is no upgrade path.
If you see a Hayward pump online without a W3 in the model number, that is the dealer SKU. Hayward’s standing notice since September 2020 is that its warranties “apply only to a product that was purchased from Hayward or a Hayward authorized seller” — so the three-year term you were reading about does not travel with it.
Which leaves the two cheapest brands on the page holding the longest terms. AquaStrong publishes two years, three with registration, with no dealer clause and no installation condition. LINGXIAO’s warranty card, packed in the box, gives two years from the date of purchase on Amazon: “the company will repair or replace it free of charge” — with the catch printed beside it that “the logistics cost of sending back to the company’s repair center needs to be paid by the customer.” On a 38-pound pump that is a real cost, and there is no dealer to carry it to. None of this is a reason on its own to pick the cheap pump over the Hayward. It is a reason to stop paying the majors for coverage you were never going to get, and to read who answers the phone before you read the number of years.

The motor is the failure, and Hayward's parts policy is the cost: bearings gone after a flood, a pump dead at 14 months, one owner on a third motor in five years — and the motor "cannot be purchased alone", so the fix is the whole power end at about $1,199. A second cluster is shipping damage on arrival (torn boxes, a broken control housing), and owners describe Hayward support and programming documentation as thin.

This crown is a month old, and it moved on stock, not on a test. From June to September 2026 the belt was the Pentair SuperFlo VS’s, until its listing ran down to its last units. In September it moved to the BLACK+DECKER 1.5 HP VS, which had a hands-on test, a five-year maker warranty and the smallest critical share in the field. On 8 October both BLACK+DECKER pumps read Currently unavailable with no seller offering them, and the in-ground line has not been re-listed. The pump the testers ran, the Hayward Super Pump VS, is no longer sold on Amazon as that model either: the only variable-speed Super Pump listing left is its successor, the Super Pump 615 with OmniX control, at 3.0 stars across two ratings, not on the EPA’s ENERGY STAR list, and sold by a seller with no row on Hayward’s own authorized-seller table. If you want the Super Pump VS, buy it from a Hayward dealer.
So we scanned the field again, and the TriStar VS is the pump the evidence leaves standing. It is a 1.85 total-HP, high-flow pump built for large pools, long plumbing runs, water features and in-floor cleaning systems that make a smaller pump work too hard. It posts the top owner score in the field — 4.7 stars across 310 ratings — and its critical share is the smallest here, 17 of 310. It is ENERGY STAR certified on the EPA’s own dataset (as Hayward SP3202VSP, the same pump without the online W3 prefix), which is the line most utility rebates are drawn on, and it has Hayward’s parts network behind it.
Buy it from the right seller. The seller Amazon puts in the buy box, PoolGoods (A. Riggs Co., Greenville, South Carolina), has no row on Hayward’s published list of authorized online sellers, and Hayward’s warranty applies only to a pump bought from Hayward or an authorized seller. The same listing also offers it from Pool Supplies Superstore, which Hayward’s list marks as authorized for Amazon. Open See All Buying Options and choose that one; it is the difference between a one-year parts warranty and possibly none.
Not for you if your pool is average-sized: at $2,199 this is more pump than a standard pool needs, and an oversized pump wastes the energy you bought it to save — Steve’s warning above applies. And know what its critical reviews say, because they are few but consistent: the motor is the failure when it comes, and Hayward sells it only as a whole power end, which one owner priced at about $1,199; others describe shipping damage on arrival and thin support from Hayward. If you want ENERGY STAR for about half the money and can live with early data, the LINGXIAO below is the answer.

With the BLACK+DECKERs gone, the gap between the AQUASTRONG and the Hayward is wide, and most of what fills it is either discontinued or not on the EPA’s list. This is the exception. The Relaax220-VS is on the ENERGY STAR certified list under its own model number, from Guangdong Lingxiao Pump Industry, a pump factory rather than a relabel, at $999. Amazon calls it 2 HP; it is a 2.2 total-HP pump, the same class as the 1.5 HP Pentair. It runs on 115V or 208–230V, takes 1.5- or 2-inch plumbing, fits a SuperFlo footprint, schedules by RPM or by flow from an app, and carries a two-year warranty card in the box.
It is an answer, not a belt. Sixty-nine ratings is under our bar for a crown, and the record is young — every visible review is from August 2025 or later. All of them are verified purchases from US buyers, with no Vine. Its critical reviews, 9 of 69, are early faults: a pump that grew loud after three weeks (one owner measured 80 dB), a squeal and grinding on start, an E030 error code, a connector pin loose out of the box, and one that errored after five minutes. Support is by email from a Canadian storefront, and the warranty pays the repair and the trip back, not the trip to the repair centre. Nobody credentialed has tested it.

The obvious question after the SuperFlo VS is what replaces it? Pentair’s answer is the SuperFlo VST (342002). Amazon’s answer, as of September 2026, was still nothing genuine: a Pentair-brand search returns VST parts and no VST pump, and the only whole-pump listings are marketplace resellers whose title misspells the brand as “Penteir”, whose own spec table reads “Brand: Generic”, and which carry nine ratings at $1,459. We are not sending you there. The genuine Pentair variable-speed pump that is on Amazon is this one — the WhisperFlo VST (011533), a bigger 2.6 total-HP pump on Pentair’s WhisperFlo wet end, ENERGY STAR certified on the EPA list, RS-485 automation-ready for EasyTouch and IntelliCenter pads, at $1,569.
Read its critical reviews before you buy, because they are unusual. Eleven of its 84 reviews were critical when we read them in September, and six of the first ten describe a pump that never ran or died within days: one “ran for 6 hours and is completely dead”, one that Pentair itself diagnosed as “a bad board”, one that ran two weeks before winter closing and would not start in spring. The other theme is the channel: Pentair’s online tier is one year parts only, and owners who bought here describe being bounced between the Amazon seller and Pentair for a replacement — “I do not recommend buying this online.” It read “Only 3 left in stock” on 8 October. It does less than the label says: owners measure 3,670 RPM at the top setting against 4,000 advertised, find it weaker than the old single-speed it replaced, and learn from the manual that it should not run at max RPM for hours. Two things to know about its rating before you lean on it. The AQUASTRONG’s 4.4 stars across 255 ratings come from one review pool shared by the 1.5 HP, 2 HP and 3 HP versions — Amazon presents them as “Color” options on the same listing — so the number describes the family, not this pump. And the base is young: every visible review was dated 2026 when we read it in September. It is a clean one — ten of ten visible reviews were verified purchases with no Vine — but it is not a measurement of one pump the way the Pentair’s 1,842 is.
And two corrections to our own card. This card has always been named the 1.5 HP, but until September 2026 it linked the 2 HP listing. It now links the 1.5 HP at about $599, the cheapest way into variable speed here by a wide margin. And we had it as a 115V-or-230V pump; it is not. The listing’s own specification line reads “Voltage: 220V”, and AQUASTRONG’s site lists it the same way, so a pad wired for a 115V single-speed needs another pump. It is self-priming with a built-in filter basket and, unlike the inground-only majors, it fits above-ground pools too. Its critical reviews when we read them (17 of 233, the smallest share on the page at the time) say it does a little less than the label — 3,670 RPM at the top setting against 4,000 advertised, and a manual that says not to run it at maximum for hours — with a handful of early leaks and one owner who never heard back from the brand. It publishes a two-year warranty, three with registration, with no dealer clause. What it does not have is the ENERGY STAR badge — the EPA’s dataset has no AQUASTRONG row — and a utility rebate is usually drawn on that line. Work out the rebate before you decide this is the cheapest pump for you.

For three months this was our best overall, and on the evidence it earned it: 4.4 stars across 1,842 ratings, ten of ten visible reviews from verified purchasers, the cheapest of the trusted pool brands at about $1,253, three programmable speeds, a 24-hour clock, an override button, and a drop-in fit where a worn-out single-speed used to sit. It is still all of those things. What it is not is available: Pentair’s own page says it “has been discontinued” and points to the SuperFlo VST, and on 8 October 2026 the buy box read “Only 3 left in stock” — though eleven sellers, In The Swim and Pool Supply World among them, were still listed under See All Buying Options. We kept the card because the listing was still live and genuine when we checked, and because the warning is more useful with the product than without it. If you can get one, it is a fine pump with the deepest owner record in the category. If the listing reads “Currently unavailable” when you arrive, that is the end of the story — do not buy a “Penteir” in its place.
How to choose: single-speed vs. variable, sizing, and run time
Variable-speed is the whole point — and the savings are real. A single-speed pump runs flat-out whenever it’s on. A variable-speed pump moves the same water at a much lower RPM, and because pump power drops with the cube of speed, halving the speed cuts the power to roughly an eighth. Run it longer at that low speed and you still come out far ahead — the DOE and ENERGY STAR peg the savings at up to ~70%. That’s the number the calculator above is built on.
One thing that can quietly cancel that saving: your automation brand. All three majors run their equipment over a proprietary RS-485 bus, so a pump on a different brand’s controller usually falls back to a Smart Relay that can only switch power on and off — no speed scheduling. A variable-speed pump under relay control is a single-speed pump with extra steps, which is the opposite of why you bought it. That applies to the AQUASTRONG on any major’s automation and to a Hayward pump on a Pentair pad — and, whatever its listing says about RS-485, check the LINGXIAO against your controller’s compatibility list before you count on speed control. If you run automation, match the pump to it, and see Pentair vs Jandy vs Hayward for the one cross-brand path that genuinely works.
Size to the pool, not the ego. A bigger motor doesn’t clean better; it just wastes more energy and strains your plumbing. Most residential inground pools are well matched to a 1.5 HP variable-speed pump (the Pentair SuperFlo VS while it lasts, or the LINGXIAO). Step up to the Hayward TriStar VS only for a large pool, long pipe runs, water features, or an in-floor cleaning system. And read the model number, not the horsepower on the box: the 1.5 HP Pentair is really a 2.2 total-HP pump, and so is the LINGXIAO that Amazon calls 2 HP.
Mind the voltage and the run time. The Hayward TriStar VS and the Pentair SuperFlo VS are 230V only, and the AQUASTRONG is 220V — almost every pool pad has it, but confirm before you buy. The WhisperFlo VST and the LINGXIAO take 115V or 230V, which is the quieter reason to consider them if your pad was wired for an old single-speed. For how long to run it, aim for one to two full water turnovers a day. With variable speed you’ll run more hours at low RPM than you did on single-speed, and that’s fine — the low-RPM hours are cheap, which is exactly where the savings live. Many utilities also offer rebates on variable-speed pumps, so check yours before you buy — and check what your utility asks for, because it is usually the ENERGY STAR certification rather than the words ‘variable speed’. We checked the EPA’s own certified-products dataset rather than the listings: the Hayward TriStar VS, the WhisperFlo VST and the LINGXIAO are on it under their own model numbers, and the SuperFlo VS’s model number EC-342001 is on it under the name SuperFlo VST — confirm that one with your utility. The AQUASTRONG is not: the dataset has no AQUASTRONG row. If your utility runs a rebate, that is the line it will be drawn on, and a rebate can close a good part of the gap between the cheapest sticker here and the pumps above it.

How much does it cost to run a pool pump?
A single-speed 1.5 HP pump running 8 hours a day at about $0.17/kWh costs roughly $900–$1,000 a year — often the biggest electricity load in the whole house. A variable-speed pump doing the same job runs closer to $250–$350. Use the calculator above with your own rate and run time to see your number.
Are variable-speed pool pumps worth it?
For almost everyone replacing a single-speed, yes. The DOE and ENERGY STAR put the energy saving at up to ~70%, because pump power drops with the cube of motor speed — running slower for longer moves the same water for a fraction of the power. Most variable-speed pumps pay for themselves in one to two seasons, and many utilities offer rebates on top.
Are variable-speed pool pumps required by law?
Largely, yes. Since the U.S. Department of Energy's pool-pump rule took effect in July 2021, most replacement pumps of 1 HP and up sold in the U.S. are variable-speed, and several states (California, Florida, Arizona) mandate them outright. If you're replacing a dead single-speed, you'll almost certainly be buying variable-speed anyway.
What size (HP) pool pump do I need?
Size to your pool's volume and plumbing, not to 'bigger is better' — an oversized pump just wastes energy. Most residential inground pools are well served by a 1.5 HP-class variable-speed pump: the Pentair SuperFlo VS while it lasts, or the LINGXIAO Relaax220-VS. Large pools, long pipe runs, water features or in-floor cleaning systems want more flow — the Hayward TriStar VS at 1.85 total HP. Read the total-HP figure, not the nameplate: the 1.5 HP Pentair and the 2 HP LINGXIAO are both 2.2 total-HP pumps.
Why is the Hayward TriStar VS the best overall?
Because it is the best-rated pump in the field that you can still buy with the maker's warranty intact. The belt has moved twice in 2026, both times on stock: from the Pentair SuperFlo VS, discontinued and down to its last units, to the BLACK+DECKER 1.5 HP VS in September, and in October to the TriStar, when both BLACK+DECKER pumps read Currently unavailable on Amazon. The TriStar holds the top owner score in the field, 4.7 stars across 310 ratings, with the smallest critical share, and it is on the EPA's ENERGY STAR list, which is what most utility rebates ask for. Two catches are on the card. At $2,199 it is more pump than an average pool needs. And the seller Amazon puts in the buy box, PoolGoods, has no row on Hayward's own list of authorized online sellers — choose Pool Supplies Superstore under See All Buying Options, which Hayward's list marks as authorized for Amazon.
Will it work with my pool automation (OmniLogic, IntelliCenter, AquaLink)?
Check before you buy, because each pump talks to a different system. The Hayward TriStar VS works with Hayward automation directly and, in Hayward's words, 'with competitive systems (via relay control)'. The Pentair WhisperFlo VST connects to 'most Pentair control systems via an RS-485 connection using the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324z)', per Pentair's install guide. LINGXIAO says its pump is 'Compatible with Pentair and Jandy automation systems' and sends the RS485 cable free if you contact it after ordering; its manual also wires it to Hayward systems and says the cable is 'sold separately, not included in package', so ask for it when you order. AQUASTRONG's manual describes no automation connection of any kind, only a built-in clock and 'Four optional preset running speeds'. The discontinued Pentair SuperFlo VS takes wired speed inputs rather than an RS-485 link. If you have no automation, all of them run on their own built-in schedules (makers' pages and manuals, read 2026-10-26).
The Pentair SuperFlo VS is discontinued — should I still buy it if I find one?
If it is in stock, yes: it is still the genuine, most-reviewed variable-speed pump on Amazon (4.4 stars across 1,842 owners) at about $1,253. It is not our pick only because you probably cannot get one for long — the buy box read 'Only 3 left' on 8 October 2026. What you should not do is buy the marketplace 'SuperFlo VST' listings in its place: the ones we found in September misspell the brand as 'Penteir', show 'Brand: Generic' in their own spec table, and carry nine ratings at $1,459. If you want to stay with Pentair, the genuine WhisperFlo VST on this page is the one that is actually on Amazon, and a Pentair dealer is the better warranty channel for any of them.
What replaces the Pentair SuperFlo VS?
Pentair's named replacement is the SuperFlo VST (342002), and as of September 2026 there was still no Pentair-branded listing for it on Amazon — only marketplace resellers we would not send you to. The genuine Pentair variable-speed pump that IS on Amazon is the WhisperFlo VST (011533), a bigger 2.6 total-HP pump at about $1,569, which we card here with a warning: most of its critical reviews describe a unit that never ran, and it read 'Only 3 left' on 8 October 2026. If you are not wedded to Pentair, the LINGXIAO Relaax220-VS is on the EPA's ENERGY STAR list at about $999, and the Hayward TriStar VS is our best overall.
How many hours a day should I run my pool pump?
Aim for one to two full turnovers of your water per day. With a single-speed that's about 8 hours at full power; with a variable-speed you run longer at low RPM, and that low-RPM time is exactly where the savings come from. The calculator above assumes 8 hours by default — adjust it to your routine.
