Pool Pump & Filter Troubleshooting: Won't Prime, High Pressure, Noises, No Flow

Short answer

One idea solves half of these: HIGH filter pressure with weak return flow means a clog AFTER the pump — almost always a dirty filter (clean or backwash it; the rule is clean when pressure runs 8–10 PSI above its clean starting number, per Hayward). LOW or no flow, a pump that won't prime, air in the pump basket, or bubbles out the returns mean the pump is being starved BEFORE it — an empty/clogged basket, low water below the skimmer, a closed valve, a clogged impeller, or a suction-side air leak (find it by pouring water over the pump lid and fittings while it runs; if the basket froth clears, that's your leak). A motor that HUMS but won't spin is usually a seized impeller or a dead start capacitor; a screech or grind is worn bearings; a rattle like gravel is cavitation (starvation again). A drip from the motor-to-housing seam is the shaft seal — a cheap wear part. Sand or DE in the pool means a broken lateral/standpipe or torn grids. Clean it before you replace it: most fixes here are free.

Before you buy a part, know this: most pump and filter problems are free fixes — a clogged basket, a lost prime, a dry o-ring, a closed valve. The parts you can buy (a capacitor, a shaft seal, a set of laterals) are real, but they’re the bottom of each list, not the top. This is a symptom-first troubleshooter: find your symptom, start with the cheap cause, and only reach for a part when the free fixes are exhausted.

The one idea that solves half of these

Picture the water’s path: it’s pulled from the pool through the skimmer and pump (the suction side), then pushed through the filter and back to the returns (the pressure side). Almost every problem sorts into one of two buckets:

  • High filter pressure + weak return flow = a clog after the pump. The filter (or a return valve) is restricting flow. Fix: clean the filter.
  • Low/no flow, won’t prime, air in the basket, bubbles at the returns = the pump is starved before it. Something on the suction side is letting in air or blocking water. Fix: clear the basket, top the water, seal the leak.

Get that split and you’re already halfway to the answer.

High filter pressure (weak flow to the pool)

Cheapest cause first — a dirty filter. Clean it: backwash a sand or DE filter, or clean/replace the cartridge. The rule from Hayward: clean when the pressure runs 8–10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. That means you have to know your clean number — note the gauge right after you service the filter, because the rule is relative to your filter, not a universal reading.

Other causes, in order:

  • Algae clogging the media. If the pool is (or was) green, algae packs the filter and holds pressure high. The filter can’t kill algae — that’s a chlorine job (clear the green first).
  • A closed or blocked return valve dead-heading the system — check that your returns are open.
  • An oversized pump pushing more flow than the filter can pass (Hayward lists this too) — a variable-speed pump run at a lower speed fixes it.

Low or no flow at the returns

The pump is being starved. Walk the suction side, cheapest first:

  • Clogged skimmer basket and/or pump basket — the #1 cause. Empty both.
  • Low water level — the water should sit around the middle of the skimmer opening; below that, the skimmer gulps air instead of water. Top it off.
  • A closed or half-closed suction valve — often bumped during cleaning.
  • A clogged impeller — debris jammed in the impeller vanes chokes flow. Kill the power, open the pump, and clear it by hand.
  • A suction-side air leak — see the next section for how to find it (froth in the pump basket is the tell).

The pump won’t prime (or keeps losing it)

Same family: air is getting in, or the pump is dry. In order:

  1. Top the water to mid-skimmer so the suction line isn’t sucking air.
  2. Fill the pump basket with a hose — a dry pump can’t self-prime instantly; give it water to grab.
  3. Seal the lid. The pump-basket lid o-ring must make an airtight seal — clean it, lube it with a silicone lubricant, and replace it if it’s cracked or flattened. Trouble Free Pool calls the lid the most common leak source.
  4. Set a multiport valve to recirculate to cut resistance while it primes, and open the filter’s air-relief valve so trapped air can escape (close it when water sprays out).
  5. Still won’t hold? Find the suction-side air leak (below).

How to find a suction-side air leak

The signature is bubbles, froth, and splashing in the pump basket while it runs, plus air blowing out the returns. Trouble Free Pool’s method for pinpointing it: with the pump running, slowly pour water over each suspect fitting one at a time — the pump lid, the basket drain plug, the PVC unions, the valves — and watch the basket. When the air in the basket clears as you wet a fitting, that fitting is your leak. The usual culprits in order: the lid o-ring, the basket drain-plug o-ring, sloppy or cracked PVC unions, and valves (cracked bodies or worn seals).

The motor won’t start, hums, or trips the breaker

  • No power / tripped breaker / bad timer. Check the obvious first — is voltage actually reaching the pump?
  • Hums but won’t spin. Power’s reaching the windings but there’s no starting torque — usually a seized impeller (debris) or a dead start capacitor. Cut the power, then check whether the motor shaft turns freely: resistance means a seized impeller (clear the debris); free-spinning but still humming points to the capacitor — a cheap part, but one that holds a charge and must be discharged before testing, so it’s a job for the handy or a pro.
  • Trips the breaker or cuts out when hot. A motor that got hot cut itself out on its thermal overload — let it cool (often 30–60 minutes) and it may restart; if it keeps happening, something’s wrong (bearings, airflow, electrical).

Safety line worth heeding: don’t sit there flipping the breaker back on a humming, non-starting motor. A locked motor draws heavy current and can burn out its windings in minutes.

A noisy pump — diagnose by the sound

  • Screech or grind = worn motor bearings. A real but repairable failure (replace the bearings, or swap the motor). A late-stage screech means shut it down before it seizes.
  • Rattle like gravel or marbles + vibration = cavitation — the pump is starved for water. Same suction-side causes as low flow: clogged baskets, closed suction valve, low water, or an air leak. Fix the starvation, not the pump.
  • A rattle that’s just loose hardware — a loose lid or union, or the pump not sitting flat on its pad. Tighten and level before you open anything.
  • A variable-speed pump with a low growl or whine at low RPM can be normal — but a new noise that tracks with speed is worth watching (a starting bearing, or the same cavitation causes, which get obvious at high speed).

Water dripping from the pump

Where it drips tells you what it is:

  • A drip at the motor-to-housing seam, from the bottom = the mechanical shaft seal, a standard two-part wear part (a ceramic half and a spring half). It’s a cheap kit — chronic low pH or high chlorine wears it out over time. Some owners still replace the motor because of the labor, but the part itself is inexpensive.
  • A seep from the housing band-clamp or the lid = a gasket or o-ring — cheaper still. Clean, lube, or replace it.

Sand or DE blowing back into the pool

The media is escaping through the filter — internal parts, not chemistry:

  • Sand filter, sand in the pool: almost always a cracked lateral (one of the finned pipes at the bottom), a cracked standpipe, or a worn standpipe o-ring letting sand bypass into the return. Drain the tank, remove the sand, replace the lateral set. (Exception: a little sand right after a fresh sand fill is just fines washing out — it stops on its own, don’t replace parts.)
  • DE filter, powder in the pool: a torn grid (the fabric) or a cracked manifold letting DE through. Open the filter, replace the damaged part, recharge with fresh DE.

Air bubbling out the returns

  • A brief burst at startup is normal. Bubbles that keep coming are a problem.
  • Persistent bubbles = a suction-side air leak (see the pour-water test above), or —
  • On a DE/cartridge filter — the air-relief valve wasn’t burped. Open the valve on top of the filter tank with the pump running until a steady stream of water sprays out, then close it. Do this after every cleaning or DE recharge.

Free fix, or a real part?

The honest split — start at the top, buy from the bottom only when the top is exhausted:

That’s the whole less-is-more idea applied to hardware: the pool store’s answer is a new pump; the real answer is usually a clean basket and a lubed o-ring. And running the pump harder or longer doesn’t fix a restriction — it doesn’t need to run 24/7 to move water; it needs an unobstructed path.

When it’s genuinely time to replace

Sometimes it really is the motor or the pump — a seized motor, failed bearings, or an old single-speed unit that’s cheaper to replace than repair (and a variable-speed swap pays for itself in power). Bottom line: work your symptom from the top of its list down. High pressure with weak flow → clean the filter. Low flow, no prime, air, or bubbles → the pump’s being starved, so clear the baskets, top the water, and hunt the suction-side leak with the pour-water test. A hum is a capacitor or a jam; a screech is bearings; a gravel rattle is cavitation; a bottom-seam drip is the shaft seal; sand or DE in the pool is internal parts. Nine times out of ten the fix costs nothing — and when it’s a part, it’s usually a few dollars, not a new pump.

Why is my pool filter pressure high with weak flow to the returns?

A high pressure gauge with weak return flow almost always means the filter is dirty and it's time to clean it — backwash a sand or DE filter, or clean the cartridge.
