A pool water leveler does one job: it opens a valve when the water drops and closes it at the height you set. The way it fails is the whole review, and every leveler on this page fails the same way in its owners’ reviews: the float sticks and the water keeps running. The Fill-O-Matic’s maker says it plainly in its own terms: the product “may malfunction, become obstructed, leak, deteriorate, or fail to stop water flow” and “is not a water-leak detection system”. So we ranked them on the owner record, how many ratings sit at one or two stars and what the newest critical reviews say, and on what each maker tells you to do to keep it from happening.

We read the field on 25 October 2026: every listing a buyer would find, each carded leveler’s star breakdown, newest critical reviews and offer list, the instructions and warranty each maker publishes, and the CPSC recall database. No outlet we could find has tested a pool water leveler; the pages that rank for it are desk roundups. Nothing here is our own test either.

The short version:

Best overall — Fill-O-Matic 2000: 4.6 across 2,243 ratings, only 4% at one or two stars, sold on Amazon by DesignStein, the Texas company that makes it. About $89.

Best value — Airlie: a stainless hose in the box and a lifetime refund-or-replace warranty, about $60.

For high water pressure — Staypoollizer NXGEN: the only one here its maker rates from 1 to 200 psi with no regulator, about $166.

Most ratings — Pool Sentry M-3000: three of the roundups we read crown it, and 14% of its ratings sit at one or two stars. About $90.

SKIP — Xmnbl “2026 Upgrade”: 7 of its 10 newest critical reviews describe it overfilling the pool.

Billed Catchweight — compared by how they fail, not by price. Ratings, sellers and stock read on 25 October 2026.

Evaporation or a leak? Check the gallons

A leveler cannot tell evaporation from a leak; it replaces both. The leveler roundups that rank for this repeat a quarter inch a day as Florida’s evaporation without saying where the number comes from. The best measurement we found is USGS’s: at the center of Lake Okeechobee from 2013 to 2016, evaporation “averaged 1,825 millimeters per year (mm/yr) (averaging 5.0 mm/d)”, about 0.2 inches a day, which USGS calls “among the highest rates computed in Florida” and puts down to clear skies over the lake. An earlier estimate built on pans at the lake’s edge came to 1,320 mm a year. A lake is not a pool, and a screen cage cuts the sun, so treat 0.2 inches a day as a high Florida rate, not your pool’s.

The check is arithmetic. One inch over one square foot of water is 144 cubic inches, which is 0.623 gallons. A 15 × 30 ft pool is 450 square feet, so each inch is about 280 gallons, and 0.2 inches of evaporation is about 56 gallons a day. Put a cheap flow meter on the hose, or read your water meter before and after a day with the pool covered and the leveler off. If the leveler is feeding the pool several times that, you have a leak, and the leveler is paying for it.

Pressure: why levelers stick open

A float valve closes against the water pressure behind it, and most of these are built for ordinary house pressure. Fill-O-Matic’s instruction sheet is the most direct about it: “If the water pressure exceeds 60 psi, a pressure reducing valve must be installed. If the Fill-O-Matic™ fails to shut off the water, the water pressure is most likely too high.” It also lists debris in the hose connector as a cause, and asks owners to rotate the float’s rubber seal every 3 to 6 months. JCS rates the Staypoollizer NXGEN’s stainless steel valve for 1 to 200 psi, so it needs no regulator. Pressure is not the only cause, though: one Fill-O-Matic owner whose unit kept adding water had a gauge reading 25 psi and a new washer. Airlie’s page lists a “Built-in pressure reducing valve” but prints no rating for it. Rola-Chem names no pressure limit for the Pool Sentry and insists on the hose: “it is essential that the customer uses a heavy-duty, reinforced hose.”

Measure before you buy. A screw-on pressure gauge at the spigot costs less than a tank of water, and it decides whether the cheapest fix is a regulator or a different leveler.

Backflow: what Florida’s code asks

A leveler connects your drinking water to the pool through a hose that sits in it all day. Florida’s residential code says “any water supply which in the judgment of the administrative authority may be used to fill the pool, shall be equipped with backflow protection” unless an approved filling system is installed (Florida Building Code, Residential, R4501.9). Fill-O-Matic’s terms put “applicable plumbing and backflow-prevention requirements” on the buyer. Fit a backflow preventer at the spigot before you leave one running.

Above-ground pools

There is no above-ground leveler with enough owner ratings for us to card. A deck-sitting leveler works on an above-ground pool only where a deck or ledge sits a few inches above the water: Rola-Chem gives the Pool Sentry 2 to 8 inches below the deck, and Fill-O-Matic’s listing says it fits in-ground or above-ground pools. A pool with only a top rail needs a rail-mount model. The Staypoollizer NXGEN Above Ground is built for pool ledges, and the search results showed 43 ratings on its listing when we read them, below the 50 we ask before we card a pick; we will card it when its own listing passes 50. Before you buy any of them, measure from the surface it will sit on down to your waterline, and compare it with the range the maker prints.

Recalls

We searched the CPSC recall database for every brand and maker on this page (Fill-O-Matic, DesignStein, Rola-Chem, Pool Sentry, Paradise Industries, Staypoollizer, JCS Industries, Airlie and Xmnbl) on 25 October 2026 and found none.

Best overall: Fill-O-Matic 2000 Automatic Pool Water Leveler

Winner

Best overall: 2,243 ratings with only 4% at one or two stars, sold on Amazon by the Texas company that makes it · The Fill-O-Matic 2000 sits on the deck on a rubber base and feeds a float valve you slide to the level you want, 2 to 9 inches below the deck. Owners give it 4.6★ across 2,243, and only 4% of those ratings sit at one or two stars. DesignStein, the San Angelo, Texas company that makes it, sells it on Amazon itself. The catch: its instruction sheet says that above 60 psi a pressure reducing valve must be used, and that if it fails to shut off, "the water pressure is most likely too high". Its newest critical reviews describe units that would not shut off, one at 25 psi with a new washer, and a plastic hose thread that cracked. The warranty is one year, with a lifetime base.

“This is not my first automatic pool filler but it will be my last. I have had it running constantly for five years in Florida”— CLawson, Amazon · Verified owner
Pros
  • Only 4% of its 2,243 ratings sit at one or two stars
  • Sold on Amazon by DesignStein LLC, the maker, with no other seller on the offer list
  • Its instruction sheet names the usual cause when it will not shut off: house pressure over 60 psi, or debris in the hose connector
  • The rubber base carries a lifetime warranty (instruction sheet), and DesignStein says it will not slip or slide
  • A five-year Florida owner: "I have had it running constantly for five years in Florida"
Cons
  • Above 60 psi it needs a pressure reducing valve, which is not in the box (the maker sells one separately); check your pressure before you trust it unattended
  • Of its 10 newest written critical reviews, 3 describe a leveler that would not shut off (one at 25 psi with a new washer, still adding water through 2 inches of rain), 2 a plastic hose connection that cracked, at 7 months and at 2 years, and 1 a unit so light it floated without added weight; the newest says the maker would not replace a defective one
  • The float's rubber seal has to be turned every 3 to 6 months, and one owner says the unit has to be taken apart to do it
  • The maker's own terms say it "may malfunction, become obstructed, leak, deteriorate, or fail to stop water flow" and "is not a water-leak detection system"

A float that stops shutting off, and a plastic hose thread that cracks. The newest critical reviews say "the system will not shut off adding water to the pool" through over 2 inches of rain, with a gauge reading 25 psi, "This does not shut OFF", and "This keeps the pool filled completely to the top"; one "broke at the black plastic threaded connection where the metal hose attaches" after 7 months, another cracked there after 2 years.

Of its 10 newest written critical reviews (December 31, 2025 to October 20, 2026), 3 describe a leveler that would not shut off and 2 a plastic hose connection that cracked, of 76 written critical reviews; the histogram puts 3% of 2,243 ratings at one star (2026-10-25) · critical reviews read 2026-10-25

The Fill-O-Matic wins on the evidence owners leave: 4.6 across 2,243 ratings, with 3% at one star and 1% at two. DesignStein says its rubber base will not slip or slide, and the maker sells it on Amazon itself. Its instruction sheet is the only one here that tells you why a leveler sticks open and what to do about it.

Not for you if: your house pressure is over 60 psi and you will not add a regulator. Three of its ten newest critical reviews describe one that would not shut off (one at 25 psi with a new washer, still adding water through 2 inches of rain), two a plastic hose thread that cracked, at seven months and at two years, one a unit so light it floated without added weight, and the newest says the maker would not replace a defective one. Its warranty is one year (the base, lifetime), and the terms page that states it is still marked as a draft.

Pros
  • Ships with a stainless steel hose extension and a brass 90° connector, so the hose lies flat along the deck
  • Lifetime refund-or-replace warranty on Airlie's own site; one owner: Airlie "sent a replacement unit the next day" after a leak two years in
  • Adjustable feet for sloped coping and a base you fill with water or sand
Cons
  • Of its 10 newest written critical reviews, 4 describe a leak ("the device leaks after a week or two after installation") and 3 a leveler that would not shut off
  • Airlie names no company beyond "Airlie Pool Products" at a Sanford, North Carolina address with a unit number; its warranty is only as good as that inbox
  • One owner found the float would not go low enough for a pool with high tile, and one that the steel knobs rusted after a few years
  • Airlie’s page lists a built-in pressure reducing valve but prints no pressure it is rated for

Leaks, and a float that will not close. The newest critical reviews say "the device leaks after a week or two after installation" (a third unit), "started leaking after 1 year" and "Leaked less than a year after"; others say "50% of the time the plastic part that moves up and down is so stiff it doesn’t turn off the water" and "not shutting off and just keeps spilling out water all day".

Cons
  • $165.95 for the Quick Connect, and both it and the Brass Swivel listing read "Only 4 left in stock"

It is the cheapest of the five, 4.0 across 970 ratings, and its title promises a five-year warranty that Xmnbl publishes nowhere else we can find. Then read its newest critical reviews: 7 of the 10 describe it overfilling the pool, including “FLOODED MY YARD” and one that “overfilled my pool for 3 weeks while I was traveling”. Its own listing asks you to check “the sealing and water level control function of the product after you receive the goods”. A leveler that needs watching is a hose with extra steps.

How to buy a pool water leveler

  • Measure the drop first. From the deck or ledge the leveler will sit on, down to the waterline you want. Each maker prints a range; a pool outside it will not work, however good the reviews.
  • Measure your water pressure. Over 60 psi, add a regulator, or buy the Staypoollizer.
  • Use a reinforced hose and a backflow preventer. The hose is under pressure all day, and Florida’s code wants backflow protection on a supply that may be used to fill a pool, unless an approved filling system is installed.
  • Watch the first fills. JCS asks owners to watch “multiple filling and shutoff cycles” before leaving one unattended; Fill-O-Matic asks the same on first use.
  • Check the gallons once a month. A leveler will hide a leak. The arithmetic above takes two minutes.

Why won't my pool water leveler shut off?

Start with pressure and grit. Fill-O-Matic's instruction sheet says that if it fails to shut off, 'the water pressure is most likely too high', that above 60 psi a pressure reducing valve must be used, and that debris in the hose connector can hold the valve open. Turn the water off at the spigot, clear the connector, and measure your pressure with a gauge on the spigot before you trust it unattended again.

Will a pool water leveler hide a leak?

Yes, and its maker says so. Fill-O-Matic's terms say the product 'is not a water-leak detection system'. A leveler replaces whatever water leaves the pool, evaporation or a leak alike, so check what it is adding: a 15 × 30 ft pool needs about 0.623 gallons per square foot for each inch, about 280 gallons an inch. USGS measured about 0.2 inches a day of evaporation at Lake Okeechobee, among the highest rates computed in Florida, so a pool losing far more than that is worth a bucket test.

Do pool water levelers work on above-ground pools?

The deck-sitting ones work where a deck or ledge sits a few inches above the water. Rola-Chem says the Pool Sentry works 2 to 8 inches below the deck, and Fill-O-Matic's listing says it fits in-ground or above-ground pools. A pool with only a narrow top rail needs a rail-mount model; the one with an owner base, the Staypoollizer NXGEN Above Ground, showed 43 ratings in Amazon's search results when we read them, too few for us to card.

What hose should I use with a pool water leveler?

A reinforced one, because the hose stays under pressure the whole time. Rola-Chem says 'it is essential that the customer uses a heavy-duty, reinforced hose' with the Pool Sentry; Airlie ships a stainless steel extension; Fill-O-Matic's listing says it includes a stainless steel hose.

Do I need a backflow preventer for a pool water leveler?

In Florida, the residential code says a water supply that may be used to fill a pool 'shall be equipped with backflow protection' unless an approved filling system is installed (Florida Building Code, Residential, R4501.9). Fill-O-Matic's terms also make the buyer responsible for 'applicable plumbing and backflow-prevention requirements'. Fit one at the spigot.
