A hose reel has one job, holding your hose, and the number on the box is the one nobody checks. Suncast rates every reel it makes for “5/8” vinyl light duty hose”. A heavier rubber or hybrid hose, or a 3/4-inch one, takes more room, so a reel rated for 125 ft can be full at 75. And the parts that leak, the swivel, the water connections and the leader hose, carry the shortest warranty: Liberty Garden gives its frames 3 years and those parts 1.
We read the field on 21 October 2026: the reels the stores sell most of, by type, each one’s newest critical reviews and who actually sells it, every maker’s warranty page, the CPSC recall database, and the five hands-on tests we could read on their own pages. Five makers’ warranties depend on who sold you the reel, and we say which.
The short version:
Best retractable — Hoselink Classic 82 ft, 9/16 in: 4% of its owner ratings sit at one or two stars, against 15% for the other two retractables, a wider 9/16-inch hose, and Good Housekeeping’s pick, at about $259.
Not for you if: you want the maker’s warranty on an Amazon purchase, or more than 82 ft of hose. Hoselink covers only products bought directly from hoselink.com.
Value retractable — Ayleid 100 ft: TechGearLab’s best retractable, about $85. Longest retractable — Giraffe Tools 130 ft: Bob Vila’s Best Overall and The Spruce’s Best Retractable, sold by Giraffe Tools so its warranty applies, about $180; 4 of its 10 newest critical reviews describe a rewind that stopped.
Best wall mount — Liberty Garden 712 Navigator: Bob Vila’s Best Overall hose reel, about $105; half its newest critical reviews describe rust. Rust-proof wall mount — Liberty Garden 704: cast aluminum, about $130.
Best cart — Gorilla GRM-200G: Bob Vila’s Best Portable, an aluminum cart that took 200 ft of heavy rubber hose in its test, sold at The Home Depot for about $149.
Best cart on Amazon — Yard Butler HT-2EZ (steel, a warranty for as long as you own it, about $190). More carts: Eley 1043 (aluminum, 10-year no-leak warranty, about $318 before a hose) and Liberty Garden 304 Explorer (aluminum, about $150).
Boxes — Giraffe Tools SW5 (steel, tested, about $200; buy it from giraffetools.com for the warranty) and Suncast SMW200 (resin, rated for 5/8-inch vinyl hose, about $115).
SKIP — Giraffe Tools HC03C cart: 6 of its 10 newest critical reviews describe a plastic guide part that broke, and its only seller is the one Giraffe’s warranty excludes.
SKIP — Suncast 175 ft cart: Home Depot’s best-selling hose cart; most of the critical reviews it shows first describe the plastic reel cracking or breaking within a year.

How to read the ratings. Every rating was read on 21 or 22 October 2026, with its newest critical reviews. Most are shared by several lengths or models sold on the same page, so most of those cards also say how many written reviews are of the version we link. The Eley’s rating comes from reviews on Eley’s own site, across all its versions, so we do not rank on it.
The capacity on the box is for a hose you probably don’t own
Most makers print one number, in feet, and say little about the hose behind it. Suncast says it, and it is the light one: “All Suncast hose reels are rated to be used with a 5/8” vinyl light duty hose, using a hose other than recommended may void your warranty.” Here is what happened when owners and one tester loaded a real hose.
| Reel | Rated capacity, as the maker or listing words it | What a real hose did |
|---|---|---|
| Liberty Garden 712 Navigator | 125 ft of 5/8 in hose | One owner: “Only have 75 ft on and its full” |
| Yard Butler HT-2EZ cart | 200 ft of 5/8 in hose (listing) | “I installed 100’ of 3/4” hose and it’s completely full”; another owner says 200 ft “barely fits” |
| Liberty Garden 304 Explorer cart | 250 ft of 5/8 in hose (listing) | An owner who had read 175 ft in the description: “It only held 1 50ft hose!!!” |
| Giraffe Tools SW5 box | 150 ft of 5/8 in, or 200 ft of 1/2 in, not 3/4 in | Bob Vila fit 150 ft only by opening the box and rearranging the hose: “We’d use a 125-foot hose or shorter for the best functionality.” |
| Gorilla GRM-200G cart | 200 ft of hose, no diameter printed | Bob Vila wound on 200 ft of heavy-duty 5/8-inch rubber hose, and the reel was full |
So the rule we use: a reel holds its rated length of the hose its maker had in mind, and a 3/4-inch or thick rubber hose takes the room of a longer thin one. If you own 100 ft of rubber 5/8-inch hose, buy a reel rated well past 100 ft.
The part that leaks has the shortest warranty
| Reel | What the maker covers | Who sold it, and the catch |
|---|---|---|
| Giraffe Tools 130 ft, SW5, HC03C | 24 months on home-use reels; wear parts, including leader hoses and O-rings, 120 days; void for “improper storage (including freezing temperatures)“ | Excludes units sold by “Amazon.com Service L.L.C./Inc.” The 130 ft is sold by Giraffe Tools; the SW5 and HC03C are sold new only by Amazon.com |
| Ayleid 100 ft | 24 months, limited | Sold by Ayleid; no seller condition found |
| Hoselink Classic 82 ft | 2 years on the reel and hose | ”Only products purchased directly from hoselink.com are covered by this warranty.” |
| Liberty Garden 712, 704, 304 | Frame 3 years; crank handle, swivel and water connections, leader hose and tires 1 year; rust on a steel frame not covered | No seller condition found |
| Yard Butler HT-2EZ | The reel body for as long as the original home owner keeps it; tires, bearings, O-rings, swivel pipes, washers and grips 180 days | Authorized sellers only; Yard Butler names Pattern, which sells this cart, as its only one on Amazon |
| Eley 1043 | 10 years, “no-leak, no-rust, no-fail”; replaces the failed part, not the cart | Excludes freezing, use beyond rated capacity, and O-rings; sold by Eley |
| Suncast SMW200 | 3 years on resin reels, activated within 90 days | Rated for 5/8-inch vinyl light-duty hose; Suncast or an authorized seller only, and Amazon is not named either way |
| Gorilla GRM-200G | 7-year limited, original owner | ”to the original owner (this excludes third party sales)“ |
Recalls
No recall covers any reel on this page. We queried the CPSC recall database on 21 October 2026 for every brand here and for the word “reel”. The one garden hose reel recall it returns is #08384, announced 2 September 2008: about 7,000 Rapid Reel two-wheel carts and four-wheel wagons sold from April 2005 to March 2006, whose tires could explode while being inflated. Rapid Reel was the Eley Corporation, today’s Eley; the remedy was free replacement tires. It does not cover the current 1043.

Good Housekeeping's testers found it "extremely user-friendly". Owners give it 4.7★ across 328, a thin base. - Good Housekeeping: "the leak-free connections join easily with a simple point-and-twist action"
- A 9/16-inch hose, wider than the half-inch hose on most retractables here
- Hoselink lists the hose as BPA-free, PFAS-free and lead-free (Hoselink)
- Hoselink's warranty covers "Only products purchased directly from hoselink.com": an Amazon purchase is not covered on the policy's own words
- A thin owner base: 72 written reviews are of the 82 ft, and only 17 written critical reviews exist across all sizes
- Of those 17, two describe a reel that would not retract fully, two a reel that broke, two a hose that kinks near the nozzle, and one owner called the warranty process "a huge hassle"
Mixed, on a thin tail. Of 17 written critical reviews, two describe a reel that "won't retract properly" or "Big problems with retraction from day one", two a unit that broke in its first season, two a hose that "kinks a lot right by the male end", one a quick-connect that "Leaks after 4 months"; one owner wrote that the warranty "has become a huge hassle".

The cleanest owner record of the three retractables, and the widest hose. On our 23 October 2026 read, 4% of its owner ratings sat at one or two stars, against 15% for the Giraffe Tools and the Ayleid, and its newest critical reviews name no single failure: two describe a reel that would not retract fully, two a reel that broke, two a hose that kinks near the nozzle. On the other two, a rewind that stops is the complaint in four and five of the ten newest. Its hose is 9/16 inch, wider than their 1/2 inch, and Good Housekeeping found it “extremely user-friendly in our tests.” About $259.
Not for you if: you want the maker’s warranty on an Amazon purchase, or more than 82 ft of hose. Hoselink’s policy says “Only products purchased directly from hoselink.com are covered by this warranty,” and the listing, though sold by Hoselink, is not hoselink.com. Its record is thinner than the other two: 72 written reviews are of the 82 ft, 17 written critical reviews exist across all sizes, and one owner called the warranty process “a huge hassle”.

Pro review “It was also easy to unwind, and it worked smoothly from all different angles.”Hands-on test: TechGearLab scored ten reels over several months and wrote 'The best retractable hose reel we tested is the Ayleid Retractable Reel', linking the listing we card. Updated June 30, 2025.— Hale Milano, TechGearLab
- TechGearLab's best retractable: "It was also easy to unwind, and it worked smoothly from all different angles."
- Ayleid rates the hose at 200 psi working and 600 psi burst pressure (Ayleid)
- Sold by Ayleid itself, with a 24-month warranty that names no seller condition
- 5 of its 10 newest written critical reviews describe a reel that jammed or stopped retracting, one "after the first year", one in its third year
- TechGearLab: "it lacks an O-ring, and we noticed that the connectors had a slight leak" — fixed with a spare ring
- A 1/2-inch hose, so less water than a 5/8-inch hose on the same spigot; one owner wrote of "much less water pressure" through a sprinkler
- The rating pools the 65, 100 and 130 ft reels in two colours; 656 written reviews are of this version
- Ayleid's own store lists the same reel far above what it actually sells for, so its list price tells you nothing
A rewind that jams or quits. The newest critical reviews say it "Doesn’t retract after a few uses", "no longer auto retracts", is "all bound up and won't pull out any farther than 8 feet", and "After the first year, it does not roll up any longer"; one owner's reel worked for two years, then "started getting stuck" in the third. Others report a failed hose-bib connector and a broken handle.

“The swivel feature is excellent. The whole reel turns smoothly so the hose doesn’t get twisted or kinked no matter which direction I’m watering.”— JN, Amazon · Verified owner
Pro review “We repeatedly dropped the hose on our concrete patio to test for durability, and there was no damage to the nozzle or couplings.”Hands-on test: Bob Vila installed and used eight retractable reels for a month and named the Giraffe Tools 130-Foot its Best Overall; the page lists it as ½-inch diameter. Page dated April 16, 2026.— Katie Barton and Tony Carrick, Bob Vila
- Bob Vila's Best Overall retractable reel after a month of installing and using eight: the "Auto-rewind system retracts the hose without any kinking or tangling"
- The Spruce's Best Retractable pick, so two hands-on tests point at this one reel
- Locks at any length and swivels 180°, so the hose comes off the reel straight in the direction you walk
- Sold by Giraffe Tools itself, the seller Giraffe's warranty honours
- The hose is 1/2 inch, not the usual 5/8, so it delivers less water than a 5/8-inch hose on the same spigot; the 5/8-inch Giraffe reels stop at 115 ft
- Owners report the rewind slowing and then stopping: 4 of its 10 newest written critical reviews describe a reel that quit retracting, one after three months and others after a year or more
- Giraffe's warranty is 2 years on the reel but 120 days on wear parts, leader hoses and O-rings included, and it is void for "improper storage (including freezing temperatures)"
- Bob Vila found "Loose rubber gaskets inside the hose’s couplings fell out upon unboxing"
- The rating pools the 78, 100, 130 and 155 ft reels; 1,706 written reviews are of the 130 ft
A rewind that gives out. The newest critical reviews say "they stop retracting" ("Three out of 4 have done this so far"), "Rewind broke after three months", one "stopped retracting after about a year of use" and another quit after a year and a half; others found the inlet connector "detached after only five months" or a reel that "leaks all over".

The longest retractable here, and the one two testers picked: Bob Vila named it Best Overall after a month of installing and using eight, and The Spruce named it Best Retractable. Bob Vila “repeatedly dropped the hose on our concrete patio to test for durability, and there was no damage to the nozzle or couplings.” It holds 130 ft of 1/2-inch hybrid hose plus a 5 ft lead-in, locks at any length and swivels 180°, about $180. It is sold by Giraffe Tools itself, and that matters: Giraffe’s warranty excludes units sold by Amazon.com.
Not for you if: you want full 5/8-inch flow, or a rewind you never think about. The 1/2-inch hose carries less water than a 5/8-inch one on the same tap; Giraffe’s 5/8-inch reels stop at 115 ft. Four of its ten newest critical reviews describe a reel that stopped retracting (“Rewind broke after three months”; another “stopped retracting after about a year of use”). Giraffe covers leader hoses and O-rings for 120 days and voids the warranty for freezing storage, so bring it in for winter.

- Bob Vila's Best Overall hose reel: "the easy-twist fitting connected snugly and sealed well, and there were no drips when we turned the water on"
- Family Handyman's tester: "I love that that this hose reel doesn’t leak, reduces kinks and easily winds my heavy hose for daily storage."
- The arm rotates, so the reel faces the direction you pull
- Liberty's warranty names no seller condition
- Rust: 5 of its 10 newest written critical reviews describe rust or corrosion, some within months, and one owner's swivel levers "rusted tight"; Liberty's warranty says the steel frame may rust and does not cover it
- Liberty covers the frame for 3 years but the crank handle, swivel, water connections and leader hose for 1
- One owner fit only 75 ft before it was full; the 125 ft rating assumes a standard 5/8-inch hose
- No lag bolts in the box, owners report
Rust. The newest critical reviews say it "Rusts after 4 months", that two reels' swivel levers "rusted tight and will no longer swivel", that "after a few months, signs of corrosion are already visible" and that it is "great for about a year then the mechanism that swivels the reel rusts and gets stuck"; one six-year owner wrote all three "have rusted out". One leaked at the reel connection on day one; one held only 75 ft.

Bob Vila’s Best Overall hose reel, and the one Family Handyman’s tester said “doesn’t leak, reduces kinks and easily winds my heavy hose for daily storage.” It takes your own 5/8-inch hose, rated at 125 ft, and its arm turns to face the way you pull. About $105.
Not for you if: you live where steel rusts, or own a long rubber hose. Five of its ten newest critical reviews describe rust (two reels’ swivel levers “rusted tight”), and Liberty’s warranty does not cover rust on the steel frame. One owner found it full at 75 ft. Owners say the box has no lag bolts.
Rust-proof wall mount: Liberty Garden 704 Decorative Cast Aluminum Wall Mount Hose Reel
Liberty Garden 704 Decorative Cast Aluminum Wall Mount Hose Reel
The wall mount that will not rust: cast aluminum, same 125 ft ratingThe listing's size menu spans 3 models: Cast Aluminum, No guide (704), Cast Aluminum Hose Guide, New, Steel Hose Reel (708) — this card is the Cast Aluminum, No guide (704). Check the size before you add to cart.
Your pick if you want a fixed wall reel by the spigot and you live where steel rusts — coastal air, sprinklers, a pool deck
“I used this all summer with no leaks. It is much easier to roll hose up in it than I expected.”— Tarn, Amazon · Verified owner
- Cast aluminum and brass: the listing calls it "non-rust", which answers the 712's weak point
- A shelf on top for a nozzle and gloves
- The rating is shared with the steel 708 and a hose-guide version on the same listing; 1,414 written reviews are of this version
- The hose-guide version draws the newest complaints: 4 of the 10 newest written critical reviews describe a guide that jammed or broke within weeks to three years — buy the plain 704 with no guide
- 3 of those 10 describe a leak at an O-ring or the brass swivel
- One owner found the weight of the hanging hose unrolls it unless you clamp the reel
- Liberty covers the frame 3 years but the swivel, water connections and leader hose 1
The hose guide and leaks, on a pooled tail. The newest critical reviews say the hose guide "will not follow the worm drive" after four months, "Malfunctioned within a month" and broke a chain after three years; three describe a leak ("O ring leaking the install day", "Leaking at the brass swivel hose connection fitting"). One reports rust within two months — the listing pools the steel 708.

The answer to the 712’s rust: cast aluminum with brass plumbing, the same 125 ft rating and a shelf for the nozzle, about $130. “I used this all summer with no leaks,” writes an owner of the plain 704.
Not for you if: you want a tested reel, or the hose-guide version. No credentialed tester has published a test of the 704, and its rating is shared with the steel 708 and a hose-guide version. Four of the ten newest critical reviews describe that guide jamming or breaking, so buy the plain 704, and three describe a leak at an O-ring or the swivel, covered for 1 year.

Best cart: aluminum frame, brass fittings, and a test that filled all 200 ftYour pick if you drag one long hose between spigots, you want a frame that cannot rust, and your hose ends are brass
“The reel appears to be solid and of good material and design. The adapter from the water supply to the hose appears to be well made of brass and did not leak. Would recommend this over the cheaper plastic ones any day.”— MLR, Home Depot · Verified owner
Pro review “As advertised, 200 feet of ⅝-inch garden hose could be rolled on the reel. The hose we used was heavy-duty rubber, so the Gorilla was fully loaded when the hose was on.”Hands-on test: Bob Vila named the Gorilla GRM-200G 200-Foot Mobile Hose Reel Best Portable and links the Home Depot listing we card. Published May 6, 2026 (Glenda Taylor).— Glenda Taylor, Bob Vila
- Bob Vila's Best Portable pick: its tester found the "7-inch solid flat-free wheels moved almost effortlessly over concrete and turfgrass"
- Bob Vila rolled 200 ft of 5/8-inch heavy-duty rubber hose onto it, so the printed capacity held for a thick hose in that test
- Anodized aluminum frame and stainless hardware, so there is no steel to rust; forged brass fittings and a 6 ft leader hose come with it
- Two wheels plus two legs, so it stands still while you crank
- The reel is blow-molded plastic, and two Home Depot owners say it came apart, one "twice on me just using it for 150’ of hose"
- Assembly can go wrong: three of the ten critical Home Depot reviews we read describe parts that would not fit, though Bob Vila found it easy to assemble
- The handle is short: owners on Home Depot and on Gorilla's own page say so, and one extended it a foot
- Near full it can bind: one owner says that "once I get to about 185ft it starts to bind up against the front rail" with a contractor-grade hose
- Gorilla's manual says "Only use garden hoses with brass fittings" because aluminum fittings can fuse to the reel, and the warranty excludes that galvanic corrosion
- Bob Vila found the "Hand crank is a little small"
Parts and assembly, then the reel itself. Three critical Home Depot reviews describe parts that would not fit (front legs "too short", a back pipe that "doesn’t easily flush into the hole"), two say the plastic reel came apart, and others name a leak after a few months and a handle that is "WAY TO SHORT".
10 of the first 30 Home Depot reviews (shown photo reviews first, dated 2022-06 to 2026-05) are 1–3 stars; 3 of those 10 describe parts that did not fit at assembly and 2 a reel that pulled apart (read 2026-10-22) · critical reviews read 2026-10-22
Bob Vila’s Best Portable reel, and a cart tested at its printed capacity: Bob Vila wound 200 ft of heavy-duty 5/8-inch rubber hose onto it, and “the Gorilla was fully loaded when the hose was on.” Anodized aluminum frame, stainless hardware, forged brass fittings and a 6 ft leader hose, about $149 at The Home Depot, which is where Gorilla’s own page sends you. Its 7-year limited warranty goes to the original owner and excludes third-party sales, so buy it there rather than from a reseller. The Spruce’s Best Overall is also a “Gorilla Mobile Hose Reel”, but its page never names the model and its weight and dimensions are not this one’s, so we do not count it. Gorilla’s GRS-200H is a different reel.
Not for you if: you want a cart you never think about after assembly, or a tall handle. Of the ten critical reviews among the first 30 Home Depot shows, three describe parts that would not fit together and two say the plastic reel came apart, one “twice on me just using it for 150’ of hose”. Owners on Home Depot and on Gorilla’s own page say the handle is short. And use brass hose fittings: Gorilla’s manual says aluminum ones can fuse to the reel, and the warranty excludes that.

“Very pleased after a year of use. Very sturdy, compact and functional, no leaks. Works great to store 100 ft of hose.”— gman, Amazon · Verified owner
- Yard Butler's lifetime warranty covers the reel body, handle, frame and welded parts for as long as the original owner keeps it
- Sold by Pattern, which Yard Butler names as its only authorized Amazon seller
- Yard Butler still sells the HT-2EZ's frame, handle, inlet pipe and hardware kits as spare parts
- Steel, not resin: owners who replaced plastic carts call it "Very sturdy, compact and functional"
- Leaks are the main complaint: 4 of its 10 newest written critical reviews describe a leak at the faucet hookup or inside the reel, some after a year or two
- Capacity: one owner reports the maker's site listed 175 ft and their 100 ft of 3/4-inch hose filled it; another says 200 ft "barely fits"
- Wear parts, including the swivel pipe and O-rings, are covered for 180 days, not for life
- Yard Butler no longer sells the complete cart on its own site — only its parts
- Several reviews are years old; the base built up from 2010 onward
Leaks and capacity. The newest critical reviews describe a connection that "leaks out of the box", a reel that "started leaking internally" in its second year until the feed "completely separated and lost its seal", and one that "Came apart at the water connection"; one owner fit 100 ft of 3/4-inch hose and found it "completely full", another that 200 ft "barely fits". A 2023 review says the company had not answered a warranty request.

Premium cart: aluminum, 10-year no-leak warranty, and an assembly jobYour pick if you want a cart you buy once, you keep about 125 ft of 5/8-inch hose, and you will spend an afternoon assembling it
“I got tired of replacing my often used hose cart every 2 years. This one is rock solid.”— Prescott B., Eley (brand site) · Verified owner
- All aluminum alloy, so the frame cannot rust, and the turf tires are flat-free
- A 10-year no-leak, no-rust warranty in writing, on a cart Eley sells itself
- Eley sells it loaded with up to 125 ft of its own 5/8-inch polyurethane hose, and a kit that takes it to 200 ft
- Eley prints a tipping answer, a brake, and a Quad-Wheel Kit for owners who want four wheels
- Assembly is the complaint: 6 of the 10 newest 1–3 star reviews describe a slow or hard build, one says "It took several HOURS" and another that it "was shipped without all the parts"
- The two-wheel version can tip while reeling: one owner of both says "The 2 wheel version is not very stable when reeling the hose in", though Eley says its carts are "not easily tipped over"
- The warranty excludes freezing and use "beyond their rated capacities", replaces the failed part rather than the cart, and requires you to shut off the water after each use
- It is pricey for a hose cart, and that price is before you add a hose
- Its rating lives on Eley's own site and pools the cart's configurations, so it is not comparable with a store rating
- Eley offers no handle extension for tall users
Assembly. The newest critical reviews say "It took several HOURS to get this assembly together over several days", that the cart "was shipped without all the parts", that it "should come assembled", and that pieces "had to be hammered together"; one owner of both versions says the two-wheel cart is "not very stable when reeling the hose in".
6 of the 10 newest 1–3 star reviews describe a slow or hard assembly, of 113 1–3 star reviews among 8,162 on Eley's site (2026-10-21) · critical reviews read 2026-10-21
The cart for buying once: aluminum alloy, flat-free turf tires, a 6-1/2 ft inlet hose and a 10-year “no-leak, no-rust, no-fail” warranty, sold by Eley at about $318 before you add a hose. Eley prints no capacity rating, but its store sells it loaded with up to 125 ft of its own 5/8-inch polyurethane hose, and up to 200 ft with its Extra-Capacity Kit. “I got tired of replacing my often used hose cart every 2 years. This one is rock solid,” one owner writes on Eley’s site.
Not for you if: you want it ready out of the box, or leave it out in a freeze. Six of the ten newest critical reviews on Eley’s site are about assembly (“It took several HOURS”), and one owner of both versions says the two-wheel cart is “not very stable when reeling the hose in”. The warranty replaces the failed part, not the cart, and excludes freezing and O-rings. In 2008, as Rapid Reel, the same company recalled carts whose tires could explode while being inflated; that recall covers carts sold in 2005 and 2006, not the 1043.

Leaks and the warranty. Why not just buy the cheap Suncast cart?
The Suncast 175 ft. Hose Reel Mobile Cart (CPLJNF17524) is the resin cart Home Depot tags as a best seller, and the case for it is fair: it is resin, so it will not rust, it is cheap, and if your hose is light vinyl, it is the hose Suncast rated it for. The problem is Suncast’s own terms: another hose may void the warranty, its resin reels carry 3 years that must be registered within 90 days, and it covers only products bought from Suncast or a seller it authorizes. If your hose is rubber, the Gorilla took 200 ft of it in Bob Vila’s test, and the steel Yard Butler’s reel body is covered for as long as you own it. And its owners describe the plastic giving out: of the 20 critical reviews among the first 30 Home Depot shows, 15 describe the cart cracking or breaking, one “Exploded after 2 months of normal use”, and two say Suncast did not honor the warranty.

- Liberty Garden 871 four-wheel cart — leaks lead its newest critical reviews.
- Gardena CleverRoll cart and Suncast resin wicker 225 ft hideaway — no seller, or only resellers, when we looked.

How to buy a hose reel
- Match the capacity to your hose, not just its length. Ask what hose the figure assumes; rubber and 3/4-inch hoses take more room.
- On a retractable, check the hose size. The Giraffe Tools and Ayleid are 1/2 inch and the Hoselink 9/16 inch, all narrower than a standard 5/8-inch hose.
- Read the warranty for the parts that leak, and who sold it. Those parts carry 120 days to 1 year at Giraffe, Yard Butler and Liberty; Giraffe, Hoselink, Yard Butler, Suncast and Gorilla restrict which sellers count.
- Drain it before a freeze. Giraffe voids its warranty for freezing storage and Eley excludes freezing; Gorilla says to drain it and store it indoors.
- On steel, expect rust. Liberty’s warranty does not cover rust on its steel frames; the aluminum 704, 304, Gorilla and Eley do not rust.
Is a hose reel worth it?
Yes, if it holds the hose you actually own and its warranty covers the parts that fail. Those parts are the connections, the swivel, the leader hose and the rewind, and they usually carry the shortest cover: Liberty Garden gives its frames 3 years but the crank handle, swivel and water connections, leader hose and tires 1 year; Giraffe Tools gives leader hoses and O-rings 120 days; Yard Butler covers the reel body for as long as you own it but O-rings and swivel pipes for 180 days. Buy the reel whose weak parts are covered, from a seller its maker honours.
Which hose reel doesn't leak?
None on this page is leak-free in its owners' reviews, so buy the warranty that pays for a leak. Eley's is the one written as a no-leak guarantee, for 10 years, though it replaces the failed part rather than the reel, excludes freezing and does not cover O-rings. In testing, Bob Vila found 'no drips' from the Liberty Garden 712, and TechGearLab found the Ayleid's connectors had a slight leak until it added a spare O-ring. Leaks are the most common complaint in the newest critical reviews of the Yard Butler HT-2EZ cart.
How much hose will a hose reel really hold?
Less than the box says, unless your hose is the one the maker rated it for. Suncast rates every reel for 5/8-inch vinyl light-duty hose. Bob Vila got 150 ft into Giraffe's 150 ft metal box only by opening it and rearranging the hose, and advises 125 ft or less. Owners report 75 ft filling a Liberty Garden 712 rated for 125 ft of 5/8-inch hose, and 100 ft of 3/4-inch hose filling a Yard Butler cart listed for 200 ft. For a 100 ft hose, buy a reel rated well past 100 ft for your hose's diameter, and further still for a thick rubber or 3/4-inch hose.
Should I buy a retractable or a crank hose reel?
A crank reel if you want to keep your own 5/8-inch hose; a retractable if you want the hose to put itself away. The retractables here come with their own hose, 1/2 inch on the Giraffe Tools and Ayleid and 9/16 inch on the Hoselink, which carries less water than a 5/8-inch hose on the same tap. A rewind that slows or stops is the most common complaint in their newest critical reviews: 4 of 10 for the Giraffe and 5 of 10 for the Ayleid. A crank reel's weak points are rust on steel frames and leaks at the swivel.
Does it matter where I buy a hose reel?
For five brands here, yes. Giraffe Tools' warranty excludes units sold by Amazon.com, and its SW5 box and HC03C cart are sold new only by Amazon.com; its 130 ft retractable is sold by Giraffe Tools and is covered. Hoselink covers only products bought directly from hoselink.com. Yard Butler covers only its authorized sellers and names Pattern, which sells the HT-2EZ, as its only one on Amazon. Suncast covers products bought from Suncast or an authorized seller and does not say whether Amazon counts. Gorilla's warranty goes to the original owner and excludes third-party sales. What is the best retractable hose reel?
The Hoselink Classic 82 ft, 9/16-inch reel: 4.7★ across 328 owner ratings shared with its other lengths, with 4% of them at one or two stars, against 15% for the Giraffe Tools 130 ft and the Ayleid 100 ft, and no single failure that dominates its newest critical reviews. Good Housekeeping found it 'extremely user-friendly in our tests'. The catch is the warranty: Hoselink covers only products bought directly from hoselink.com, so an Amazon purchase is not covered. The Giraffe Tools 130 ft, Bob Vila's and The Spruce's pick, is the longest retractable here, but 4 of its 10 newest critical reviews describe a reel that stopped retracting.
Update history
- 2026-10-23 — Re-verdict on the retractables. Our new scoring method reads each reel's share of one- and two-star ratings, and on a same-day re-read (23 October 2026) the Hoselink Classic 82 ft had 4% of its ratings at one or two stars against 15% for the Giraffe Tools 130 ft and the Ayleid, with no dominant failure in its newest critical reviews, while 4 of the Giraffe's 10 newest describe a reel that stopped retracting. The Hoselink moves from premium to best retractable; the Giraffe stays carded as the longest retractable. The Hoselink's warranty still covers only hoselink.com purchases, and the card says so.
- 2026-10-22 — Published. We searched the field on 21 October 2026: the best-seller and new-release lists for hose reels and hose carts, ten buyer phrasings and every named brand, plus Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and Tractor Supply. Each carded listing's newest critical reviews, its seller and offer list, and each maker's product, catalog and warranty pages were read; the CPSC recall database was queried for every brand; and the Bob Vila, The Spruce, TechGearLab, Good Housekeeping and Family Handyman tests were re-read on their own pages. The Gorilla GRM-200G's Home Depot reviews were read on 22 October.
