A garden hose is the cheapest thing in a backyard and the one you handle most. The roundups test the same things: weight, kinks and fittings. None of them tells you the number a pool owner needs, which is how long the hose takes to put an inch back in the pool, because almost no maker prints flow at a stated water pressure, and the testers who time buckets do not say what pressure they tested at.

We read the field on 20 October 2026: Amazon every way we could search it, signed in, each listing we card with its newest critical reviews and its own review count, the maker and warranty pages we could read, the CPSC recall database, and the two tests that publish measurements, TechGearLab and Business Insider. Business Insider’s best overall is ours too; TechGearLab’s is not, and we say why below.

The short version:

Best overall — Dramm ColorStorm, 5/8 in x 50 ft: Business Insider’s best overall and the quickest flow it measured, 10.91 gallons per minute, about 26 minutes to raise a 15 by 30 ft pool 1 inch. 4.4★ across 2,790 ratings on Amazon, with 9% of ratings at one or two stars, the fewest of the 5/8-inch hoses here. Sold by Amazon at about $80.

Not for you if: you carry the hose more than you fill with it. It is the heaviest per foot of the hoses TechGearLab weighed here, and four of its ten newest critical reviews describe kinking.

Best value — Flexzilla Garden Hose, 5/8 in x 50 ft: Amazon’s number one garden hose at about half the Dramm’s price, $40, on the deepest record here, 4.3★ across 103,282 ratings. It twists and kinks, and four of its ten newest critical reviews say the outside turned gummy or sticky after about two years.

Lightest — Water Right 400 Series, 7/16 in x 50 ft: 0.06 lb a foot in TechGearLab’s measurements, sold by Water Right itself at about $70. The narrow bore is slow: 4 gallons per minute at 40 psi, about 70 minutes for that inch of pool.

Lightest 5/8-inch — zero-G 4001-50: TechGearLab’s pick for most people, about $50. Seven of its ten newest critical reviews describe a broken connector, a leak or a hole, and Teknor Apex says claims on hoses bought through third-party sellers “will not be honored”.

SKIP — Pocket Hose Copper Bullet expandable: Amazon’s number two garden hose, 4.0 stars with 14% of ratings at one star; seven of its ten newest critical reviews describe a leak, burst, split, hole or tear.

Billed Catchweight — compared by hose type and job, not price. Ratings read live on 20 October 2026; the Dramm and the Flexzilla re-read on 24 October.

Prices move constantly — any Amazon price shown is as of the date noted and subject to change; tap through for today's number.

How to read the ratings. Every rating here is an Amazon base we read ourselves, signed in, on 20 October 2026 (the Dramm and the Flexzilla re-read on 24 October), with its newest critical reviews. No visible review on any of them came from the Vine free-product programme, and every one shows reviews from outside the US, so all are flagged global. Four are also pooled: one rating covers every length and colour on the listing. That is why each card also gives the count of written reviews for the version we link: 7,124 for the Flexzilla, 211 for the Dramm, 309 for the Water Right, 2,851 for the zero-G, whose listing has no size menu, and 2,815 for the Pocket Hose.

Why the weights are per foot. TechGearLab weighed 100 ft lengths of three of these and a 50 ft Dramm, so we divide each measured weight by its measured length (our arithmetic). Amazon’s own weight fields are not usable: the Flexzilla’s says 1.6 ounces.

Why the pressure column does not rank. A working pressure and a burst pressure are different numbers. Flexzilla, Dramm and Water Right print a working figure; Teknor Apex and Pocket Hose print only a burst figure. Water Right’s 50 psi working rating is the lowest here, and its 150 psi is the point it says the hose could rupture, not a working rating.

How long each hose takes to top off the pool

The number every pool owner wants is minutes, and only two hoses here give you enough to work it out. Raising a 15 by 30 ft pool 1 inch takes about 280 gallons: 15 × 30 × 1/12 ft = 37.5 cubic feet, at 7.48 gallons per cubic foot (our arithmetic).

HoseFlowBasisMinutes for 280 gallons
Dramm ColorStorm10.91 gallons per minuteBusiness Insider’s test; supply pressure not statedabout 26
Water Right 400 Series (7/16 in)4 gallons per minuteWater Right, at 40 psiabout 70
FlexzillaNot published by the maker——
zero-G 4001-50Not published by the maker (Teknor Apex says “Same as 5/8”)——
Pocket Hose Copper BulletNot published by the maker——

The two figures are not on one basis: Water Right states 40 psi, and Business Insider does not say what pressure its tap ran at. Treat the Dramm’s 26 minutes as one test’s result and the Water Right’s 70 as the maker’s rating; your own house pressure will move both. If you top off often, Water Right’s own 5/8-inch 600 Series is rated at 9 gallons per minute at 40 psi, about 31 minutes for the same inch; we did not read its listing, so it is not carded here.

Recalls

No recall covers any hose on this page. We queried the CPSC recall database on 20 October 2026 for every brand here and for the word “hose”: the only garden-hose recall since 2018 is #25394, announced 24 July 2025, for HydroTech 5/8-inch Expandable Burst-Proof hoses from Winston Products, about 3.6 million units. HydroTech is a different maker from Pocket Hose. If you own a HydroTech expandable, check its model against that recall.

Pro review Business Insider
“it had the quickest water flow of all the hose contenders: 10.91 gallons per minute. That makes it especially valuable for tasks like filling up a pool or large bucket.”

Hands-on test: Business Insider measured each hose's flow in gallons per minute and named the Dramm ColorStorm its best overall. Pros
  • Business Insider measured 10.91 gallons per minute, the quickest flow in its test, and named it best overall
  • Dramm rates it for hot water up to 160°F, at 130 psi working and 518 psi burst pressure
  • TechGearLab scored it 86 and found that the Eley and the Dramm "both actively resisted and rolled out of kinks"

Cons
  • Heavy: 10.3 lb for 50.67 ft in TechGearLab's measurements, the most per foot of the hoses it weighed here
  • Owners report more kinking than the testers: 4 of its 10 newest written critical reviews describe kinking ("Kinks excessively"), and 4 a coupling, leak or hole that failed or a torn hose on arrival, one when "The coupling broke after 3 months"
  • Business Insider did not state the house pressure behind its 10.91 gallons per minute, so the figure cannot be set beside a maker's rating at 40 psi
  • Dramm's product page makes no drinking-water claim

Kinking first, then early failures. The newest critical reviews call these "the most KINK PRONE hoses I have ever had", say one "Kinks excessively" and another is "NOt kink resistant"; one owner's "coupling broke after 3 months", one found "a big Leak, hose slice", and one new hose "had a large hole in it". One arrived as "a used hose" with a tear, and one owner disliked the "odd, slightly slimy coating".

Pros
  • Amazon's number one garden hose, with the deepest owner record here: 4.3★ across 103,282, and 7,124 written reviews of this 50 ft version
  • Flexzilla's own page ties its pressure rating to a temperature: 150 psi working at 70°F, with a -40°F to 140°F range
  • Flexzilla's page says "The Flexible Hybrid Polymer inner tube material is drinking water safe."

Cons
  • It twists and kinks: owners keep describing kinking, coiling or stiffness, and TechGearLab, testing the 100 ft length, found it "does tend to get twisted up easier when in use"
  • The outside can age badly: 4 of its 10 newest written critical reviews on 24 October 2026 say the surface turned gummy, sticky or began "disintegrating" after about two years, or grew mold
  • Flexzilla publishes a working pressure only, 150 psi at 70°F, and no burst figure
  • A Florida owner who kept it on a lanai reel came back after a summer away to find it "covered in black mold"; a six-year owner says the outside "has gotten very dirty and very sicky"
  • The rating pools every length, colour and grip style on the listing

Age and handling. The newest critical reviews say the surface "gets gummy by the end" after 2 or 3 years, that it "Lasted about 2 years before the outside started disintegrating and becoming sticky. Then the hose end shot off", and "All of the hoses after 2 years have become very sticky"; a Florida owner found mold "within a week". The rest are handling ("It kinks and it bulky and heavy", "the same tendency to coil, like most hoses"), a leaking thread and two that "keep busting".

The hose most Amazon buyers end up with, at about half the Dramm’s price, and the one with the deepest record here: 4.3 stars across 103,282 ratings for the whole listing, and 7,124 written reviews of this 50 ft version. It is a 5/8-inch hybrid polymer, sold and shipped by Amazon at about $40. Flexzilla’s page rates it at 150 psi working pressure at 70°F, gives a -40°F to 140°F range and says the inner tube is drinking-water safe, and it lists a limited lifetime warranty.

We crowned it best overall on 20 October, because its newest critical reviews were about a hose that kinks or will not coil, not one that fails. On 24 October we re-read them: four of the ten newest now say the outside turned gummy, sticky or began “disintegrating” after about two years (“Then the hose end shot off”), and 11% of its ratings are one or two stars against the Dramm’s 9%. It is still the hose to buy for the money. One owner puts the trade plainly: “Wouldn’t say it’s kink resistant because it certainly does kink but would transition ALL of our hoses to this brand if I could!!!”

Not for you if: you want a hose that never twists or one that ages well. Owners keep describing kinking, coiling or stiffness (“It kinks and it bulky and heavy”), and TechGearLab, testing the 100 ft length, found it “does tend to get twisted up easier when in use.” Flexzilla publishes a working pressure only, with no burst figure. Cons
  • Slow to fill anything big: 4 gallons per minute at 40 psi is about 70 minutes to raise a 15 by 30 ft pool 1 inch, and an owner of the 100 ft length writes that it "significantly lacks the pressure because of the skinny width"

Failures, not handling. The newest critical reviews: "the female connector broke off the hose", "Leak after to months", "water began to leak through the head connection" just after the return window, "After about 6 weeks, it got a hole in it", "Lasted less than a year", "After 18 months, it sprang a leak near the faucet connection" and "Last only 3 years". Three more say it kinks: "This is not kink-free."

✓ Safety: no active recallNo active CPSC recall found (checked 2026-10-20): the saferproducts.gov RecallTitle API returned no brand-titled record for Zero-G or Teknor Apex; the class query RecallTitle=Hose (23 records) shows one garden-hose recall since 2018, #25394 (HydroTech, Winston Products), a different maker.

TechGearLab’s pick for most people, and the lightest full 5/8-inch hose it weighed here: 8.4 lb for 99.17 ft, with “some of the best spray pressure and distance of any we tested.” Teknor Apex rates it “600+ PSI burst”. On Amazon it holds 4.3 stars across 10,051 on a listing that sells the 50 ft only, at about $50. An owner who liked it says what the tail says: “The only problem is its life span.”

Not for you if: you want a hose to last, or a warranty you can count on. Seven of its ten newest critical reviews describe a broken connector, a leak, a hole or a short life (“the female connector broke off the hose”, a leak “After 18 months”, a hole “After about 6 weeks”). Teknor Apex’s warranty says “All claims made and purchased through third party sellers will not be honored,” and this listing is sold by InSide Out Intl LLC, not Amazon or Teknor. Teknor’s own buy page links InSide Out’s store, but the warranty does not say whether an Amazon purchase from it counts. The term is printed only on the packaging, and an approved claim “may be reimbursed with a digital merchandise refund card.”

“I thought someone finally designed an expandable hose that is durable. Nope. The hose split after three years of very light use. It is a great hose when it works but don’t expect it to last.”— Bob mihelich, Amazon · Verified owner
Pros
  • It shrinks when empty and owners like the weight: "No kinking, shrinks to small size, 2 easy ways for on and off and lots of spray configurations."
  • Ships from Amazon
Cons
  • 7 of its 10 newest written critical reviews describe a leak, burst, split, hole or tear, several within six months: "After ONLY 4 months the hose started leaking!!!"
  • 4.0★ across 23,954, with 14% of ratings at one star, the most of any hose here
  • One owner disputes the hose's burst rating: "650 psi burst, i think not. The insert says 80 psi."
  • No warranty term we could read: the site's "Warranty Info" link opens a missing page, its help center offers "a 30-day guarantee on all purchases", and retail buyers are told the product is "subject to the individual retail store's return policy"
  • Even owners who rate it highly plan to replace it: "I expect to have to buy a new one in 2-4 years because these just don't last very long."

Leaks, bursts and splits within months. The newest critical reviews: "One leaked, they replaced it. Now there's a big hole in the other one", "This copper bullet 50 ft hose leaks", "it burst" after about ten uses, "In less than 6 months, these hoses tore up at multiple breaking points", "now it split and leaking" four months after a June order, and "After ONLY 4 months the hose started leaking!!!" One owner questions the pressure claim: "650 psi burst, i think not. The insert says 80 psi."

✓ Safety: no active recallNo active CPSC recall found (checked 2026-10-20): the saferproducts.gov RecallTitle API returned no record titled Pocket Hose or BulbHead; Telebrands returned 3 records, all unrelated products (Hempvana, heat-pack scarves). The 2025 recall of HydroTech 5/8-inch Expandable Burst-Proof hoses (#25394, recalled 2025-07-24) is Winston Products' HydroTech line, a different maker; the class query RecallTitle=Hose (23 records) shows it as the only garden-hose recall since 2018.

The case for it is real. It weighs little, shrinks to a coil you can hang on a hook, and its fans mean it: “No kinking, shrinks to small size, 2 easy ways for on and off and lots of spray configurations.” It is Amazon’s number two garden hose, about $40. But its record is the one to read. It holds 4.0 stars across 23,954, the lowest here, with 14% of ratings at one star, and seven of its ten newest critical reviews describe a leak, burst, split, hole or tear, several within six months (“After ONLY 4 months the hose started leaking!!!”). One owner disputes its burst rating outright: “650 psi burst, i think not. The insert says 80 psi.” Even a five-star owner expects to “buy a new one in 2-4 years because these just don’t last very long.” And there is no warranty term to lean on: the site’s “Warranty Info” link opens a missing page, and its help center offers a 30-day guarantee. There is no recall; we list it so you can see why we would not buy one.

The hoses we read and did not card

  • NeverKink PRO 100 ft (Teknor Apex) — 4.4★ across 9,154, but its newest critical reviews describe bursts, connector leaks and kinking, and it has no job the zero-G and the Flexzilla do not already cover.
  • Giraffe Tools hybrid 100 ft — 4.3★ across 9,093; its critical reviews are mostly kinking and twisting, the job a hybrid hose is bought to avoid, plus owners who say it measured short.
  • Bionic Steel 50 ft — 4.4★ across 40,418 pooled ratings; leaks within weeks or months dominate its critical reviews.
  • Gilmour Flexogen 50 ft — 4.1★ across 795, a lower average than any non-expandable hose we card, on a thin base.
  • HydroTech Burst-Proof expandable — 3.6★ across 3,552, from Winston Products, the maker of the recalled line (#25394).

How to buy a garden hose

  • Ask for flow at a stated pressure. It is the number that decides how long the pool takes, and on this page only Water Right prints one. A flow figure without a pressure (every bucket test we found) ranks hoses within one test, not across tests.
  • Read which pressure a rating is. Flexzilla prints a working pressure, 150 psi at 70°F, and Dramm prints both, 130 psi working and 518 psi burst. Teknor Apex prints a burst figure, 600+ psi; the Copper Bullet’s maker page prints none. Water Right’s 150 psi on Amazon is its rupture margin over a 50 psi working rating. TechGearLab’s “PSI Limit” column mixes the two kinds, so do not compare them as one number.
  • Treat “drinking water safe” as a claim. Flexzilla, Teknor Apex and Water Right say it on their own pages; none of the pages we read names a certification listing, and Dramm’s ColorStorm page makes no claim at all.
  • Bore sets the speed. A 7/16-inch hose like the Water Right is lighter and slower; every other hose we card is 5/8 inch, and the expandable gives only an outside diameter.
  • Check who sold it before you need the warranty. Teknor Apex refuses claims through third-party sellers; four of the five hoses here were sold by Amazon or by the maker itself; the zero-G was not.
  • Keep it out of the sun. Flexzilla rates its pressure at 70°F, and heat and damp are where owners report trouble. Drain it, reel it in the shade, and run it until it runs cool before you spray anyone.

How long does it take to fill a pool with a garden hose?

Raising a 15 by 30 ft pool 1 inch takes about 280 gallons (15 × 30 × 1/12 ft = 37.5 cubic feet, at 7.48 gallons per cubic foot). Water Right rates its 7/16-inch 400 Series at 4 gallons per minute at 40 psi, so about 70 minutes. Business Insider measured the Dramm ColorStorm at 10.91 gallons per minute, so about 26 minutes, but it did not say what water pressure it tested at. Flexzilla, Teknor Apex (zero-G) and Pocket Hose print no flow figure at a stated pressure on the pages we read, so we cannot give a time for them. Your own house pressure moves every one of these numbers.

Which garden hose is safe for drinking water?

Several makers claim it; none of the pages we read names a certification listing. Flexzilla's page says 'The Flexible Hybrid Polymer inner tube material is drinking water safe.' Teknor Apex's zero-G page says 'Lead Safe Safe drinking water'. Water Right says 'The formulations we use meet both FDA and NSF standards for drinking water safe applications', which is a claim about its polyurethane, not a listing. Dramm's ColorStorm page makes no drinking-water claim. If the kids drink from it, let it run first, and treat 'drinking water safe' as the maker's word.

Is a rubber or a hybrid garden hose better?

Rubber is heavier and, in one test, faster: TechGearLab weighed the Dramm ColorStorm at 10.3 lb for 50.67 ft, about 0.20 lb a foot, and Business Insider measured it at 10.91 gallons per minute, the quickest in its test. The Flexzilla's hybrid polymer weighed about 0.13 lb a foot in TechGearLab's measurements and carries the deepest owner record here, 4.3★ across 103,282. Both draw handling complaints from owners: the Flexzilla's critical reviews keep describing kinking and coiling, 4 of the Dramm's 10 newest describe kinking, and 4 of the Flexzilla's 10 newest (24 October 2026) say its outside turned gummy or sticky after about two years. Pick rubber for flow and the better owner record, hybrid for carrying and price.

Are expandable garden hoses worth it?

We skip them. The Pocket Hose Copper Bullet is Amazon's number two garden hose and holds 4.0★ across 23,954, with 14% of ratings at one star, and 7 of its 10 newest critical reviews describe a leak, burst, split, hole or tear, several within six months. In 2025 the CPSC announced recall #25394 for HydroTech 5/8-inch Expandable Burst-Proof hoses, about 3.6 million units from Winston Products; that is a different maker from Pocket Hose, and no recall covers the Copper Bullet.

Which garden hose holds up in Florida heat?

Read what each maker says about heat. Flexzilla gives its pressure rating at 70°F ('Max. working pressure at 70°F: 150 psi') and a -40°F to 140°F temperature range. Dramm rates the ColorStorm for hot water up to 160°F. Water Right allows water up to 150°F at a maximum working pressure of 50 psi. Heat and damp are also where owners report trouble: a Florida Flexzilla owner who left it on a lanai reel over the summer came back to find it covered in black mold. Drain the hose, keep it on a reel out of the afternoon sun, and run water through it until it runs cool before you spray anyone.

Update history
  • 2026-10-24 — Re-verdict: the Dramm ColorStorm is now the best overall and the Flexzilla the best value. We re-read both listings signed in, with their newest critical reviews. The Dramm holds 4.4 across 2,790 with 9% of ratings at one or two stars, and it is Business Insider's best overall; the Flexzilla holds 4.3 across 103,282 with 11%, and 4 of its 10 newest critical reviews now describe a surface that turned gummy or sticky after about two years. That undid the reason we had crowned it: its complaints were no longer only kinks.
