Search for a pool basketball hoop and almost every page ranks the same handful of hoops, and almost none of them say how they know. We found one outlet that put pool hoops in a pool and wrote down what happened: Wirecutter, during a week of testing in Hawaii in 2025. Everything else we read was a desk pick, and one of the most-cited roundups says so in its own words.
So we did what we always do. We read the listings one at a time, signed in, and then read every recent critical review on each one, because a hoop’s star rating tells you whether people like it and the one- and two-star reviews tell you how it fails. Then we read each maker’s own warranty page, because a pool hoop lives outdoors beside chlorinated water, and the warranty says what the maker will stand behind there.
The finding that decided this page: the best-selling pool hoop on Amazon, with the deepest and happiest owner record in the category, comes with a six-month warranty that excludes “exposure to chemicals and/or liquids”. The hoop Wirecutter actually put in a pool weighs four times as much filled and carries three years. Which one is right depends on who is playing, and on what your pool and deck will hold, so this page is organised that way.
The short version:
🏆 Best overall: Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot Clear — the one pool hoop tested in water by a credentialed outlet, a 200 lb base, an 18 in stainless rim that hangs 24 in over the water, and three years of warranty. 4.5★ across 419 ratings, $415.
💰 Best value: GoSports Splash Hoop PRO — the deepest owner record in the category for about a third of the price, best for younger kids. 4.8★ across 7,948 ratings. Catch: a six-month warranty.
🏖️ Best for a tanning ledge: Ledge Lounger Hoopstr — rated to stand in up to 9 in of water, 10-year residential warranty.
🛋️ If you own Vero loungers: Step2 Vero Pool Basketball Hoop — matches the furniture, rolls on wheels.
💵 Under $100: Poolmaster Classic Pro Rebounder — a real backboard; budget for a new rim.
⚓ Permanent: Dunn-Rite Clear Hoop Jr. — deck-anchored, one critical review in its record, needs a concrete deck.
🧱 Above-ground: Poolmaster Pro Rebounder — the one built to mount on a top rail.
🛟 Floating: GoSports Splash Hoop 360 — $40, works in any pool; its foam breaks down in heat.
⛔ The skip: S.R. Smith BASK-CH — pro hardware sold on Amazon by a third-party store for $1,592.

Read the mount column first. A hoop on a weighted base sits on the deck and needs a deck; a deck-mounted hoop needs a concrete deck you can core; a rail mount needs an above-ground top rail; a floating hoop needs nothing. Then read the base weight, because the most common complaint about the lighter hoops is that they tip or drift.
Three of these ratings are shared. The GoSports PRO’s covers four colours and includes reviews from Amazon’s other marketplaces, the Poolmaster Classic’s covers three colours, and the Clear Hoop Jr.’s covers both post sizes. The Hoopstr’s lives only on Ledge Lounger’s own site, where makers’ ratings run high.
Freestanding hoops for the deck
Most pool hoops sit on a plastic base you fill with water (or sand) at the edge of the pool. They need no tools beyond assembly and come in for winter. The difference between them is weight, rim size and how far the rim reaches out over the water.
Best overall: Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot Clear
A freestanding hoop on a rotomolded base that holds 25 gallons, about 200 lb filled, with a powder-coated aluminum post that adjusts in height, an 18 in vinyl-coated stainless rim and a clear backboard. Dunn-Rite has made pool hoops in Indiana since 1983 and sells this one through its own Amazon store.
Wirecutter tested it over a week of pool play in 2025 and named it the best pool basketball hoop: “Of the many toys we tested, none was as immediately successful and instantly fascinating as the Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot Clear Hoop. The Dunn-Rite hoop hangs out farther from the pool’s edge than other, cheaper models we tested.” That reach is the practical difference: Dunn-Rite gives the overhang as 24 in, so players shoot and rebound in the water rather than against the coping. 4.5★ across 419 ratings, $415.
Not for you if you want to skip checking the box. The critical reviews are not about the design. They are about what comes out of the factory: “The plexiglass glued to the back board completely detached and fell off,” from a buyer whose hoop lasted under fifteen minutes; another’s backboard came off within a day; two found the base leaking once filled; others received a bent rim or a box missing hardware. Owners who got a sound one describe it standing up to teenagers and a saltwater pool. Inspect every part the day it arrives, fill the base and leave it overnight, and keep the box. One more thing: Dunn-Rite’s own page gives the lowest rim height as both 29 in and 23 in.
The hoop Wirecutter put in a pool · A freestanding poolside hoop on a 200 lb water-filled base, with an 18 in vinyl-coated stainless rim, a clear backboard and an aluminum post that adjusts in height. Made in Indiana, with a three-year warranty, and the one pool hoop a credentialed outlet has tested in water.
Your pick if teens and adults play hard enough to tip a lighter hoop and you want a 200 lb base and an 18 in rim that hangs 24 in out over the water — 4.5★ across 419, and the pick of the one credentialed test anyone has run.

Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot Clear Pool Basketball Hoop
The hoop Wirecutter put in a poolYour pick if teens and adults play hard enough to tip a lighter hoop and you want a 200 lb base and an 18 in rim that hangs 24 in out over the water — 4.5★ across 419, and the pick of the one credentialed test anyone has run.
Pro review “Of the many toys we tested, none was as immediately successful and instantly fascinating as the Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot Clear Hoop. The Dunn-Rite hoop hangs out farther from the pool's edge than other, cheaper models we tested.”— Kit Dillon and Kyle Fitzgerald, Wirecutter
- The only pool hoop we found tested in water by a credentialed outlet: Wirecutter's 2025 pick after a week of pool testing
- 200 lb filled base, four times the weight of the best-selling hoop's
- Hangs 24 in out over the water, so play happens in the pool rather than against the coping
- Regulation-size 18 in stainless rim, vinyl-coated, and sold as salt-system compatible
- Three-year warranty from a maker that sells direct and answers, by its owners' account
- The critical reviews are factory problems: backboard plexiglass whose glue let go, bases that leaked when filled, parts missing from the box
- About nine percent of its owners rate it two stars or fewer, against about two percent for the GoSports PRO
- Two people to assemble, by Wirecutter's account and the owners'
- Dunn-Rite's own page states two different lowest rim heights, 23 in and 29 in
Quality control, not design. The recent critical reviews describe a clear backboard whose glue let go within a day or within minutes, bases that leaked once filled, a bent rim, and boxes missing hardware or arriving broken. Owners who got a sound one describe it lasting through teenagers and saltwater.

Best value: GoSports Splash Hoop PRO
The best-selling pool basketball hoop on Amazon: an HDPE hoop with a 34 by 25 in backboard and a 14 in rim on a base that weighs 50 lb filled, with two balls and a pump. It sets up in minutes, and its owner record is the deepest and happiest in the category. 4.8★ across 7,948 ratings, $130.
Not for you if you need the maker behind it. GoSports’ warranty runs six months from delivery, its exclusions include “exposure to chemicals and/or liquids”, and claims go back to the retailer you bought from. The recent critical reviews name rim screw holes that strip (one buyer on both of two units), hardware that broke after a summer, a customer line nobody answered, and one hoop found floating in the pool the next morning despite extra weight on the base. At 50 lb it suits younger kids better than teenagers. GoSports also sells a near-identical hoop under its Coast Modern brand.
GoSports Splash Hoop PRO
The best seller, at a third of the priceYour pick if younger kids are the main players and you want the deepest, happiest owner record in the category for about $130 — 4.8★ across 7,948 — and you can live with a six-month warranty.
- The deepest owner record in the category, and only about two percent of its owners rate it two stars or fewer
- About a third of the price of the Dunn-Rite, sold and shipped by Amazon
- Three-minute setup, light enough to move and store
- Two balls and a pump in the box
- A six-month warranty whose exclusions include 'exposure to chemicals and/or liquids' — on a product that lives beside a pool
- The recent critical reviews name rim screw holes stripping, on two units for one owner, and a GoSports customer line nobody answered
- A 50 lb base: one owner found it floating in the pool the next morning even with extra weight added
- The rating is shared by all four colours and includes reviews from Amazon's other marketplaces
Hardware and support. The 2026 critical reviews describe rim screw holes that strip (one buyer on both of two units), hardware breaking after a summer, a base hard to drain, one found floating in the pool overnight, and a customer line whose voicemail was full. Owners who got a sound one describe years outdoors without fading.

Best for a tanning ledge: Ledge Lounger Hoopstr
From the in-pool furniture maker, a rolling hoop rated for 0 to 9 in of water, so it can stand on a tanning ledge with you as well as on the coping or the grass. It weighs 210 lb filled, puts a 16 in rim 36 in above its base, and carries the longest warranty we found on a pool hoop, though not the one its own page prints. The Hoopstr page says “All Ledge games are warranted to perform for 15 years for residential use”; Ledge’s warranty page for orders after January 2025 gives the Games collection “ten (10) years for residential use and two (2) years for commercial use”. We go by the dated terms page. 4.4★ across 22 ratings, $599.
Not for you if you need an independent rating, or have a salt pool. Ledge Lounger sells it only on its own site, so its 22 reviews have no independent listing to check against. And its warranty page excludes “corrosion due to exposure to salt-water conditions” of stainless hardware, on the same site whose Hoopstr page calls it “chlorine and saltwater pool friendly.”
Ledge Lounger Hoopstr
The one that stands on the tanning ledgeYour pick if you have a tanning ledge and want the hoop standing in the water with you rather than on the deck — rated for 0 to 9 in of water, on a 15-year residential warranty, at 4.4★ from 22 reviews on Ledge Lounger's own site.
- Rated for up to 9 in of water, so it stands on a tanning ledge — no other hoop we read is rated to stand in the pool
- A 15-year residential warranty, the longest term on any hoop we read
- 210 lb filled, the heaviest freestanding base here after Dunn-Rite's
- Wheels and a built-in ball rest
- Sold only by Ledge Lounger, so its 22 reviews live on the maker's own site with no independent listing to check them against
- Ledge Lounger's warranty page excludes 'corrosion due to exposure to salt-water conditions' of its stainless hardware, while the Hoopstr page calls it 'saltwater pool friendly'
- $599, and a 16 in rim rather than regulation 18 in
- A fixed 36 in rim, low for adults playing from deeper water

If you own Vero loungers: Step2 Vero Pool Basketball Hoop
A rolling resin hoop from Step2’s Vero furniture line, in the same white as the Vero chairs and loungers: a base that takes 250 lb of water, two wheels and a drain plug, and a size 4 ball. 4.6★ across 30 ratings, $329 on Amazon, about $100 under Step2’s own price on the day we read it.
Not for you if you want a long record. Thirty ratings is early data, and both recent critical reviews are factory faults — misaligned pilot holes on one unit and missing nuts on a second for the same buyer, and a missing part that drew no reply from Step2 for another. The rim and ball are sized for kids.
Step2 Vero Pool Basketball Hoop
The one that matches the Vero loungersYour pick if you already own Step2 Vero loungers and want the hoop to match them, on wheels with a drain plug — 4.6★ across 30, early data, and Step2's three-year warranty.
- Matches the Step2 Vero chairs and loungers in style and colour
- Wheels and a drain plug, so it empties and moves without a dolly
- A three-year warranty from a maker that sells direct
- On sale on Amazon at about $100 under Step2's own price
- Thirty ratings is early data
- The two recent critical reviews are factory faults: misaligned pilot holes on one unit and missing nuts on a second, and a buyer whose missing part drew no reply from Step2
- A size 4 ball and a smaller-than-regulation rim — built for kids more than adults
Factory faults on arrival: two units with misaligned pilot holes or missing nuts for one buyer, and a missing part that drew no reply from Step2 for another. Happy owners mention the plexiglass being fiddly to screw down.

Under $100: Poolmaster Classic Pro Rebounder
A long-running budget hoop with a real 34 by 25.5 in backboard and a deck base you weight with water or sand; Poolmaster says sand, and its owners agree. 4.4★ across 920 ratings, $93.
Not for you if you dunk. The PVC rim is the part that fails: three of its ten most recent critical reviews are broken rims, one owner on his third. Others describe the whole hoop twisting when a ball hits the board. The warranty is a year, and on the day we read it only four were left at this price; the blue version cost far more.
Poolmaster Classic Pro Rebounder Poolside Basketball Hoop
The budget hoop with a deep recordYour pick if you want a real backboard for under $100 and will weight the base with sand, not water — 4.4★ across 920 over two decades on sale.
- A real backboard and a deep owner base for under $100
- Poolmaster says sand weights it better than water, and owners agree
- Rated for ages 15 and up, sized for teens rather than toddlers
- The PVC rim breaks — three of its ten most recent critical reviews, one owner on his third rim
- The whole hoop twists when a ball hits the backboard, by several owners' account
- One-year warranty, and only 4 left in stock at the colour that sells at this price; the Blue listing was $166.99 the same day
- The rating is shared by all three colours
The PVC rim is the weak part: owners describe it breaking from ball impact and sun-brittleness, one on his third rim. Others describe the hoop twisting when the board is hit, hardware rusting within weeks, and parts missing from the box.

Deck-mounted
A deck-mounted hoop drops into an anchor set in the concrete. It cannot tip, drift or float, it lifts out for winter, and it needs a poured deck and usually a contractor.
Permanent: Dunn-Rite Clear Hoop Jr.
A half-inch acrylic backboard and 14 in stainless rim on a post that drops into a 2-3/8 in brass anchor, or into a 5 in hole cored in a concrete deck 6 to 8 in from the pool edge. Made in Indiana, salt-system compatible, and with one critical review in its whole record: a missing backboard. 4.6★ across 42 ratings, $700.
Not for you if your deck is pavers. The anchor goes in concrete, and the post should be bonded to the deck’s bonding grid where local code requires it. Order the right post size: the 1.90 in and 2-3/8 in versions are separate listings.
Dunn-Rite Clear Hoop Jr. Deck-Mounted Pool Basketball Hoop
The permanent, deck-anchored oneSold in 2 post diameters on this listing: 1.90 in post, 2-3/8 in post — this card is the 2-3/8 in post. Check the size before you add to cart.
Your pick if you have a poured-concrete deck, want a hoop that never tips or drifts, and will pay for the core drilling — 4.6★ across 42 with one critical review.
- Cannot tip, drift or float away — it is anchored into the deck
- One critical review in its whole record, a missing backboard
- Half-inch acrylic backboard and stainless rim, salt-system compatible
- Lifts out of its anchor for winter
- Needs a poured-concrete deck and a 5 in cored hole unless you already have a Dunn-Rite anchor, and the post has to be bonded to the deck grid where local code requires — a contractor job
- $700, and the rim is 14 in rather than regulation
- Order the right post: the 1.90 in and 2-3/8 in versions are separate listings, and one owner had to exchange
- Its 42 ratings are shared by both post sizes
Almost none: one buyer received it without the backboard. The rest of the record describes three summers of teenagers and storms, and a ball that deflates.

Skip: S.R. Smith BASK-CH
S.R. Smith makes commercial pool equipment, and this dual-post game has a 304 stainless frame and a regulation rim. On Amazon it comes from a third-party store at $1,592, while S.R. Smith says its games are “available through a variety of pool professionals.” 4.0★ across 31 ratings.
It is the skip for the channel and the money, not the steel. At more than twice the Dunn-Rite deck hoop, from a seller outside the maker’s dealer network, the warranty path is unclear, and owners call it flimsier than the S.R. Smith model before it. If your pool builder is already coring the deck, buy S.R. Smith through them.
S.R. Smith Residential Challenge Pool Basketball Game (BASK-CH)
The skip: pro hardware, wrong channelYour pick if your pool builder is already coring the deck and quotes S.R. Smith through their own channel — on Amazon, 4.0★ across 31 from a third-party seller is a lot of money for an unclear warranty path.
- Commercial-maker hardware: a 304 stainless frame and a regulation rim
- Deck-anchored, so it cannot tip or drift
- Sold on Amazon by a third-party store, while S.R. Smith says its games are 'available through a variety of pool professionals' — the warranty path from that seller is unclear
- About $1,600, more than twice the Dunn-Rite deck hoop
- Owners call it flimsier than the S.R. Smith model it replaced, and one had aluminium welds fail
- Needs cored concrete-deck anchors and bonding, a contractor job
Build and value: owners call it less sturdy than the S.R. Smith model before it, one had welds fail on two units, and earlier buyers received no net. A 2026 owner praises the delivery and says assembly took three adults.

Above-ground: Poolmaster Above-Ground Pro Rebounder
The one design we found built to mount on an above-ground pool: Poolmaster’s backboard and hoop on a bracket that fixes permanently to a top rail 4 in or wider. 4.3★ across 68 ratings, $70.
Not for you if you won’t drill your pool. Mounting it means fixing it into the top rail, and above-ground pool makers exclude unauthorized alterations from their warranties — read yours first. Owners describe it as wiggly on the rail, and one bolted it to a wrap-around deck instead. Only two were left on the day we read it. If you don’t want holes in the rail, a floating hoop is the alternative.
Poolmaster Pro Rebounder Poolside Basketball Hoop for Above-Ground Pools
The one that bolts to an above-ground top railYour pick if you have an above-ground pool with a top rail at least 4 in wide and no deck to stand a base on — 4.3★ across 68, and the only design we found built to mount on the rail.
- Built for an above-ground pool's top rail, where a deck-base hoop has nowhere to stand
- The same 34 × 25.5 in backboard as Poolmaster's poolside model
- Under $70
- Mounting it means fixing it into your top rail; one owner was hesitant to drill the rail and bolted it to a wrap-around deck instead
- Owners describe it as wiggly on the rail
- One-year warranty, and only 2 left in stock on the day we read it
- Check your pool's warranty before drilling — above-ground pool makers exclude unauthorized alterations
Fit on the rail: owners describe it wiggling on an above-ground frame and not realising it had to be screwed down. One bolted it to a deck rather than drill the top rail.

Floating: GoSports Splash Hoop 360
A hoop that floats, so it works in any pool and assembles in seconds. 4.6★ across 819 ratings, $40.
Not for you if your pool sits in the sun all summer — which in Florida is every pool. The foam floats break down in heat: five of the ten most recent critical reviews on this listing, and on its twin listing owners write “Not meant for Florida weather” and “does not hold up in South Florida heat”; one says the crumbling foam ended up clogging the pool pipes. Owners who took it out of the water between games still lost the foam within a summer. GoSports sells the foam base as a $7.99 replacement part, so budget for one a season, and pull it out of the pool when nobody is playing.
GoSports Splash Hoop 360 Floating Pool Basketball Game
The floating one, if you budget for new foamYour pick if you want a hoop in the middle of the pool rather than at the edge, for about $40, and you will buy GoSports' $7.99 replacement foam base when the original crumbles — 4.6★ across 819.
- Works in any pool, above-ground included, because it floats
- About $40, sold and shipped by Amazon
- Assembles in seconds with no tools
- GoSports sells the foam base as a $7.99 replacement part
- The foam floats break down in sun and heat: five of the ten most recent critical reviews, several from Florida, and one owner says the crumbling foam clogged the pool pipes
- Tips over when a ball hits the rim, by several owners' account
- A six-month warranty that excludes 'exposure to chemicals and/or liquids'
- Take it out of the pool between uses — owners who did still lost the foam within a summer
The foam floats disintegrate in sun and heat, often within one summer, even when owners take the hoop out between uses; several write from Florida, and one says the crumbs clogged the pool pipes. The other theme is tipping when a ball hits the rim.

Before you buy any pool hoop
- Play in the shallow end. A hoop invites jumping and dunking. Keep it where players can stand, away from the deep end and diving boards, and make “no diving at the hoop” the house rule.
- Fill the base the day it arrives. A leaking base shows overnight, and returns run from delivery.
- Sand beats water where the maker allows it. Poolmaster says so for its base, and owners of light bases report tipping and drifting with water alone.
- Salt pool? Read the warranty, not the box. Rinse the hoop with fresh water now and then.
- Deck-mounted? Concrete only, cored and bonded, usually by a contractor.
FAQ
What is the best pool basketball hoop?
The Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot Clear, at 4.5★ from 419 ratings. It is the only pool hoop we found that a credentialed outlet has tested in water (Wirecutter named it its pick after a week of pool testing in 2025), and it pairs a 200 lb water-filled base and an 18 in stainless rim with a three-year warranty. Its catch is quality control: about one owner in eleven reports a backboard whose glue let go, a leaking base or missing parts.
Is the GoSports Splash Hoop PRO worth it?
For younger kids, yes. It has the deepest owner record in the category, 4.8★ from 7,948 ratings, and costs about a third of the Dunn-Rite. Know two things before you buy: its base weighs 50 lb filled, a quarter of the Dunn-Rite's, and its maker's warranty runs six months and excludes 'exposure to chemicals and/or liquids'.
What pool basketball hoop works on an above-ground pool?
Two kinds. A floating hoop goes in any pool. For a hoop at the edge, Poolmaster's above-ground Pro Rebounder mounts permanently to a top rail at least 4 in wide, which means fixing it into the rail — check your pool's warranty first, because above-ground pool makers exclude unauthorized alterations. A weighted-base hoop needs a deck around the pool to stand on.
Can a pool basketball hoop stand on a tanning ledge?
The Ledge Lounger Hoopstr is rated for 0 to 9 in of water, so it can stand on a tanning ledge or sun shelf as well as the coping or the grass. It weighs 210 lb filled and carries a 10-year residential warranty on Ledge's warranty page (its product page says 15). Every other freestanding hoop on this page is built to sit on the deck.
Do I need a contractor to install a deck-mounted pool basketball hoop?
Usually. A deck-mounted hoop drops into an anchor set in the concrete: Dunn-Rite's Clear Hoop Jr. needs either an existing 2-3/8 in Dunn-Rite anchor or a 5 in hole cored in a concrete deck 6 to 8 in from the pool edge. Pavers and loose stone are not a base for an anchor. If your deck is already poured, budget for core drilling and bonding.
Are pool basketball hoops safe in saltwater pools?
Read the warranty, not the label. Dunn-Rite sells every hoop as salt-system compatible and backs it for three years. Ledge Lounger's Hoopstr page says 'chlorine and saltwater pool friendly' while its warranty page excludes corrosion of stainless hardware 'due to exposure to salt-water conditions'. GoSports' warranty excludes 'exposure to chemicals and/or liquids' outright. Rinse any hoop with fresh water now and then and store it for winter.
How deep should the water be under a pool basketball hoop?
Play it in the shallow end, where players can stand. A pool hoop invites jumping and dunking, and jumping at a rim in water too deep to stand in, or diving toward it, is how people get hurt. Keep the hoop away from the deep end and away from diving boards.

- October 2026 (2026-10-26) — Ledge Lounger Hoopstr warranty corrected from 15 years residential to 10: Ledge's warranty page for orders after January 2025 gives the Games collection ten years residential, two commercial; its product page still says 15.
