Best Solar Pool Covers 2026: Ranked by Cost per Season

A solar cover is a bubble blanket that floats on the water, holds in heat and cuts evaporation. Cal Poly’s controlled twelve-pool study measured a bubble cover cutting evaporation by 94.9%. It is not a winter cover or a safety cover: it holds no weight and does nothing over the off-season.

The question most pages answer is which cover lasts longest, and they answer it with mil thickness. The owners who keep these covers on real pools say something else. A Trouble Free Pool admin, May 2026: “We have not seen a brand, thickness, or type that exceeds 2-3 years.” A Trouble Free Pool moderator: “If it lasts long enough to not rip/tear, the bubbles are always the failure point.” Florida’s Solar Energy Center wrote in 1983 that bubble covers last “only one to five years in most Florida applications.”

So we read the field the way those owners describe it. We read every contender’s Amazon listing signed in on 2026-10-02, then read its most recent critical reviews, then read each maker’s own warranty document. The finding that decided this page: the cover with the longest warranty headline excludes the way these covers fail, and its owners describe that refusal in their own words. A bubble cover is a consumable, so we rank on cost per season.

Every rating on this page is a read of a product family, not your exact cover. Most solar cover listings pool their reviews across sizes, colours and thicknesses. Blue Wave is the exception: each size is its own listing. The pooling is marked on every card.

Cost per season: the number that ranks these covers

A cover’s price means little until you divide it by how long it lasts. We use 2.5 seasons for every cover. That is the middle of the Trouble Free Pool admin’s “2-3 years”, and the owners we read reported no brand or thickness that reliably beats it. To compare different card sizes, every figure is scaled to a 16×32 ft cover (512 sq ft), from each card’s stored price.

Rounds for above-ground pools sell in a different size ladder, so the Sun2Solar round is priced on its own card rather than in this table. The cheapest 16×32 we read on Amazon was VINGLI’s 12-mil, and it is not on this page. Its ten newest critical reviews, all from September 2026, describe covers bought that spring coming apart within about three months, most of them the clear version. At one season, a cheap cover is not a cheap season.

Best overall: BigXwell 16-mil Solar Pool Cover

The cover with the strongest test record and, re-read on 25 October 2026, the cleanest owner record: 7% of its ratings sit at one or two stars, against 19% for the Blue Wave 12-mil that held this slot until then. The Spruce named it its “Best Heavy-Duty” pick and its tester kept it on her pool: “Kathryn has used this pool cover for over a year, and she can now keep her pool open during the chillier months.” It also carries the best owner rating here, 4.5★ across 1,054 ratings, pooled across 14 sizes.

You pay for it twice. At $247 for a 16×32 it costs $99 a season at our basis, about double the Blue Wave’s. And 16 mil is heavy. Its critical reviews mostly aren’t about early failure; they’re about handling: “it take more than one person to get it off the pool!!!” Its warranty is one year.

Not for you if: you have no reel and pull the cover by hand, or the season-by-season price is the whole decision. Its own critical reviews include a cover that “Lasted only two short Maine summers”, so it is a consumable too, just a better-reviewed one.

Cheaper per season, if it lasts: Blue Wave 12-mil Solar Blanket

The cheaper answer for an in-ground rectangle, and our pick until 25 October 2026. It is a 12-mil blue blanket, sold and shipped by Amazon, at $144 for a 16×32. At our 2.5-season basis that works out to $58 a season, and on paper that beats the BigXwell by half. It rates 4.0★ across 1,141 ratings. Blue Wave is the one line here that lists each size separately, and none of its critical reviews carries another size’s label, though some come from Amazon’s other marketplaces.

Blue Wave’s 12-mil line has a hands-on test behind it, with one caveat: Bob Vila tested its clear 12-mil round, not this blue rectangle, and named it the runner-up. Bob Vila’s tester found it “did a great job of absorbing sunlight.” That one-hour test raised every cover 4 to 5°F, though, so it can’t tell covers apart on heat.

Not for you if: you expect it to outlast the others. Re-read on 25 October 2026, nine of its ten newest critical reviews are covers that failed inside one or two seasons: “Lasted 15 months.” “It didn’t even last a whole season before degrading and falling apart.” 19% of its ratings are one or two stars, and its count jumped from 1,141 to 2,518 in a month on the same listing, so the number may now pool more than this size. The warranty covers only delamination and seam failure. It needs a registration card mailed within 30 days, and it is void on water above 90°F.

The category’s best seller, and on paper the cheapest cover here per season: $67 for a 24×12, or $48 a season scaled to a 16×32. Its rating, 4.3★ across 1,338 ratings, pools every size, shape and thickness VEVOR sells on one listing.

Its critical reviews have a failure of their own. Owners of the 32×16 and larger describe two pieces joined down the middle, and report that seam leaking “within a few weeks,” “after being on for 3 days,” or tearing in “one wind storm”. Every seam complaint we read was on a 32×16 or larger. VEVOR publishes no warranty document for its solar covers.

Skip: Doheny’s Clear-Tek 3200 Ultimate Clear

The longest warranty headline on the page, and the lesson in reading one. Doheny’s own warranty document runs 8 years on the 3200 Clear: two years at no charge, then you pay 70 to 95% of list price plus shipping for a replacement. It covers “Delamination” and “Seam Separation.” It excludes, by name, “Bubble Damage - This occurs when the bubbles on the solar cover start to fall off.”

That is the failure owners describe. From its one-star reviews: “Only lasted 3 yrs.The warranty is for 8 yrs. The bubbles peeled off a was getting into our jets. Called and they said only seams and delamination was covered.” Another: “They would not honour their warranty at all. Blamed it on our chemicals.” The listing rates 3.6★ across 219 ratings, with 24% of reviews at one star.

The Spruce named the 3200 its “Best Clear” cover, and its tester measured real heat gain on sunny days. We don’t doubt the heat. We doubt that $210 buys more seasons than a cover half the price.

12 mil vs 16 mil: what thickness actually buys

Thickness buys resistance to rips and tears. It doesn’t buy tougher bubbles, and the bubbles are what fail. A Trouble Free Pool moderator: “The bubbles are the same flimsy thickness on all covers.” What 16 mil adds is weight. A Trouble Free Pool admin who owned one: “16, on a 20x40 (which I had) is a BEAST. I’ll never buy a 16 again. I have landed on the 12 as a reasonable balance.”

So buy 12 mil unless thin covers keep tearing on your pool, and buy 16 only with a reel. On colour, nobody has measured the difference. Clear lets more sunlight through, which is the reason makers sell it for heat. But we found no instrumented test comparing clear, blue and blue/black covers on real pools, and Cal Poly’s study used blue covers only.

Read the warranty for what it pays

The solar cover warranties we read, from Doheny’s, Blue Wave, Sun2Solar and In The Swim, share three habits:

• They exclude the common failure. Doheny’s and In The Swim exclude “Bubble Damage” by name. Blue Wave and Sun2Solar cover only delamination and seam failure, so lost bubbles are out there too.
• They are pro-rated. After the free years you pay a percentage of list price, plus shipping, for the replacement. An “8-year warranty” is two free years and a discount after that.
• They have conditions. Blue Wave’s requires a registration card mailed within 30 days and voids above 90°F water. Sun2Solar’s excludes sun or heat damage while the cover is off the pool.

BigXwell offers one year and says no more. VEVOR publishes no warranty document for its covers.

The reel: it depends entirely on your pool, and the cheap one isn’t a whole reel

We tell you to use a reel, because dragging and folding a blanket is what kills bubbles. Which reel is a bigger question than it looks, and we have given it two pages of its own — above-ground reels here and in-ground reels here — because no product crosses between them.

Three things from that work belong on this page:

Correcting ourselves: this section used to say “buy the cheap one.” It shouldn’t have. The Swimline HydroTools 52000 is the cheapest above-ground reel at about $69.95, and its own listing states in capitals that the tube kit is not included. What ships is 8.5 lb of end frame, straps and hardware; the tube your cover actually rolls onto is a separate purchase, and HydroTools’ own tube kits are priced above the reel head. Comparing that sticker against complete systems — which is what we were doing — makes it look like a bargain it may not be.

There is no single best above-ground reel, because the three real options fit three different pools. A rectangular metal-frame pool takes the Intex 28051E (4.3★ across 1,138, the best-evidenced reel in the field). A steel-wall pool takes the socket-mounted Swimline. A round or oval pool takes the Sun2Solar White Reel — which is still the one we would skip on merit, at 3.9★ across 297 and the highest price of the three. That uncomfortable line stands: Sun2Solar still makes two of the covers we recommend on this page, and its reel is the one we tell you to avoid. Being right about a company’s blankets doesn’t make it right about its hardware.

Every telescoping reel sags at the width it advertises. It is the universal fault, above ground and in ground, and one owner explains why: the tube is a stack of ~42-inch aluminium sections staggered apart to reach your width, so the wider you set it, the less overlap holds the middle up. Buy a reel rated comfortably wider than your pool.

One trap worth repeating: search “solar reel cover” and the top results are 4.6–4.7★ at $20–45. Those are fabric sleeves that go over a reel to protect it from UV — not reels. Useful if you already own one and park it in full sun; useless for getting a cover off the water.

How to use it (and make it last a little longer)

• Bubbles down. The bubble side faces the water. Smooth side up.
• Trim to fit. Lay it out on a warm day, let it relax, and cut it with scissors. Sun2Solar and Doheny’s both say cutting doesn’t void the warranty.
• Use a reel on anything bigger than a small round. Dragging and folding a wet cover wears out the bubbles.
• Store it out of the sun when it’s off, rolled and covered. Florida’s Solar Energy Center warns that heat building up in a stored cover “can cause the inner bubbles to expand and rupture.”
• Keep chlorine in range. Blue Wave’s warranty excludes damage from excessive chlorine, and Doheny’s blames bubble loss on unbalanced water.
• It’s not a winter cover. Pull it for the off-season and close the pool properly (in-ground, above-ground).

The honest bottom line

Every bubble cover is a consumable, so buy the cheapest season you can trust, not the longest warranty. On the owner record that is now BigXwell’s 16-mil, best with a reel.
