Best Solar Pool Covers 2026: Ranked by Mil Thickness and Heat

A solar cover is the cheapest upgrade in the backyard: a bubble blanket that floats on the water, traps the sun’s heat (up to about 15°F), and cuts evaporation by roughly 95% — so the pool’s warmer, you top it off less, and you lose less chemical to the sky. But “solar cover” is another word the listings blur. It is not a winter cover and not a safety cover — it heats the water in season and holds no weight. Get that straight, then the whole choice comes down to two numbers.

The only two things that matter: mil and color

Every real decision here is one of these two:

• Mil thickness (8 / 12 / 16) — how thick the bubble material is, which mostly sets how long it lasts. 8-mil is cheapest and shortest-lived; 12-mil is the sweet spot; 16-mil is the buy-it-for-more-seasons choice (and a bit heavier to handle).
• Clear vs blue — how much it heats. Clear transmits more sunlight straight to the water for the biggest heat gain; blue transmits some and reflects the rest — a little less heat, slightly less algae potential, and the look most owners prefer. Same price at the same mil.

Everything else — diamond patterns, “premium” names — is marketing. If you buy one solar cover without overthinking it, this is the one. 12-mil blue is the balanced middle of the line — enough thickness to last a few real seasons, blue for a sensible heat-and-algae balance, and light enough to pull off by hand without a reel. It rates 4.3 stars across 1,156 owners, the strongest clean base in the lineup, and it comes in round sizes from 8 to 33 feet for above-ground pools. Trim it to fit and the warranty still stands.

Not for you if: you want the absolute longest life (step up to the 16-mil) or the maximum possible heat (go clear). And remember the honest lifespan: plan on ~2–3 seasons of real use whatever the warranty says.

When warming the water is the entire point — a shaded yard, a short season, a spa-warm target — clear plus 16-mil is the play. The crystal-clear cover sends the most sunlight straight to the water for the biggest temperature gain, and 16-mil is Sun2Solar’s thickest, longest-lived bubble (it carries the longest warranty). It’s the closest match to the cover Bob Vila’s testers ranked best overall.

Not for you if: you fight algae. Clear lets a bit more light reach the water than blue, so keep your free chlorine on target. And 16-mil is heavier — on a big pool, budget for a reel.

The value alternatives: Blue Wave and Intex

Sun2Solar isn’t the only name. Blue Wave sells 8- to 14-mil blankets in blue and clear across rounds, ovals, and rectangles (its 12-mil round was Bob Vila’s runner-up), and Intex makes a thin, cheap 8-mil solar cover for its own above-ground pools that testers still liked for the money. Both are legitimate — we’ll add the ones worth wiring as we verify current listings and ratings. If you own an Intex Easy Set or Metal Frame pool, the matching Intex cover is the no-fuss budget option.

The field beyond Sun2Solar — and the one that outsells them all

We built this page around Sun2Solar’s line because it’s the ladder that makes the mil-and-color decision legible. But a re-scan of the category’s best-seller list on 2026-08-05 turned up something we’d missed: the single best-selling solar cover on Amazon isn’t a Sun2Solar at all, and it rates higher than any of them.

Read one at a time, zero incentivised reviews on any:

The honest asterisk on the leader. VEVOR’s 4.4★ is a pooled listing-wide base — its 32×16 16-mil listing reports the identical 1,101 ratings, and the reviews themselves confirm it: five verified-purchase cards we read carried five different variants, including an 18-foot ROUND. So the pool spans shapes as well as sizes and thicknesses, and not one visible reviewer owns the 24×12 12-mil this card links. So it isn’t a clean read of the exact cover that arrives, the same caveat we already put on the Sun2Solar 1200 rectangle.

And the same caveat belongs on our own winner — we checked, and it applies (2026-08-15). We used to say the Sun2Solar round’s number was the clean one here. It isn’t. That listing is a single parent holding 25 variants — 13 blue rounds from 8 to 33 feet, plus 12 clear rounds — and the 12-foot CLEAR cover reports the identical 4.3★ across 1,157 ratings. So the Sun2Solar base is pooled too. Its pool is genuinely narrower than VEVOR’s — one shape, one mil grade, where VEVOR’s spans shapes, sizes and thicknesses — but it pools across colour, which is one of the two specs this whole page says decides the purchase. That number cannot tell you whether blue owners or clear owners ended up happier.

The honest scoreboard on evidence quality, then: the only genuinely clean single-model base on this board is In The Swim’s 4.2★ across 920 — and that cover is 8-mil, the shortest-lived grade here. Nobody selling a 12-mil cover publishes a rating that describes only the cover you receive. Rank these on mil, colour and size fit, which are verifiable, and treat every star average on the page as a read of a product FAMILY.

In The Swim is worth knowing about as the cheap round: 4.2★ across 920 owners at about $66 — a genuinely clean single-model base, but it’s 8-mil, the thinnest grade, so you’re buying the shortest life on the board. Fine as a one-or-two-season cover; not the buy-once choice.

What doesn’t change: mil and color still decide this purchase, and Sun2Solar still has the deeper ladder of round sizes for above-ground pools plus the trim-to-fit warranty language nobody else matches. If you want a rectangle and the lowest price, take the VEVOR with your eyes open about the pooled rating. If you want a round for an above-ground pool, stay with the 12-mil Sun2Solar — not because its rating is cleaner (it isn’t, see above), but because it is the only line that ladders 8 to 33 feet and lets you trim to fit without voiding the warranty.

The reel: it depends entirely on your pool, and the cheap one isn’t a whole reel

We tell you to use a reel, because dragging and folding a blanket is what kills bubbles. Which reel is a bigger question than it looks, and we have given it two pages of its own — above-ground reels here and in-ground reels here — because no product crosses between them.

Three things from that work belong on this page:

Correcting ourselves: this section used to say “buy the cheap one.” It shouldn’t have. The Swimline HydroTools 52000 is the cheapest above-ground reel at about $69.95, and its own listing states in capitals that the tube kit is not included. What ships is 8.5 lb of end frame, straps and hardware; the tube your cover actually rolls onto is a separate purchase, and HydroTools’ own tube kits are priced above the reel head. Comparing that sticker against complete systems — which is what we were doing — makes it look like a bargain it may not be.

There is no single best above-ground reel, because the three real options fit three different pools. A rectangular metal-frame pool takes the Intex 28051E (4.3★ across 1,138, the best-evidenced reel in the field). A steel-wall pool takes the socket-mounted Swimline. A round or oval pool takes the Sun2Solar White Reel — which is still the one we would skip on merit, at 3.9★ across 297 and the highest price of the three. That uncomfortable line stands: Sun2Solar makes every cover we recommend on this page, and its reel is the one product here we tell you to avoid. Being right about a company’s blankets doesn’t make it right about its hardware.

Every telescoping reel sags at the width it advertises. It is the universal fault, above ground and in ground, and one owner explains why: the tube is a stack of ~42-inch aluminium sections staggered apart to reach your width, so the wider you set it, the less overlap holds the middle up. Buy a reel rated comfortably wider than your pool.

What owners complain aboutFit / placement

The tube trap is worse than the listing implies, and owners are the ones who explain it. It is not only that the tube is sold separately — the one you buy may not fit: "the tube does not fit in the plastic holders and just keeps spinning, not rolling up cover", and another owner's "pipe was a smaller diameter" than the ends needed. One states the discovery plainly: "I didn't notice when I ordered this that you have to also order the tube the solar cover rolls up on." Beyond that it is plastic and it is short-lived — "because their plastic, they don't last long. I've gone through 3 sets of these things", "horrible cheap plastic quality", one arriving with two defects, and a set the previous homeowners had "broken during winterization". Several report needing to modify it: "everyone had to do some modifications to make this roller work."

Then it flexes: "the reel will sag in the middle" from an owner who counted the tubes (4 inner and 3 outer, about 42 in each, staggered to length), and "when used at full length capacity it is very weak. The tabs that attach to the cover are incredibly hard to attach as well." One trap worth repeating: search “solar reel cover” and the top results are 4.6–4.7★ at $20–45. Those are fabric sleeves that go over a reel to protect it from UV — not reels. Useful if you already own one and park it in full sun; useless for getting a cover off the water.

How to actually use it (and make it last)

• Bubbles DOWN. The bubble side faces the water — that’s what traps the heat. Smooth side up.
• Trim to fit. Lay it out on a warm day, let it relax, and cut it to your pool’s shape with scissors. Sun2Solar allows it; it won’t void the warranty.
• Use a reel on anything bigger than a small round. Dragging and folding a wet cover is what wears out the bubbles (and your back).
• Store it out of the sun when it’s off. UV kills a solar cover faster than the water does.
• It’s not a winter cover. Pull it for the off-season and close the pool properly — a solar blanket left on all winter turns into a torn, sunk mess.

The honest bottom line

Solar covers all do the same job; the differences are mil (how long it lasts) and color (how much it heats).
