Ringside notes
This is the 12-mil-or-16-mil question, asked of two covers you can buy rather than of the numbers on a box. Blue Wave's 12-mil blue rectangle is our pick for most in-ground pools; BigXwell's 16-mil is our heavy-duty pick. Both were read signed in on 2026-10-02, at the same 16×32 size, along with their most recent critical reviews and each maker's own warranty.
What the extra 4 mil buys is rip resistance and weight. It does not buy tougher bubbles, and the bubbles are what fail. BigXwell's critical reviews are mostly about handling — owners call it stiff, and one says it takes more than one person to pull it off the pool — while its life lands at the bubble-cover norm, about two seasons. Blue Wave's critical reviews describe the same one-to-two-season life with a lighter cover. BigXwell carries the better owner rating, and the only long-term hands-on test we found: The Spruce's tester used it for over a year.
The money decides it. At our 2.5-season basis BigXwell costs about twice as much per season. Blue Wave's warranty is five years pro-rated and needs a registration card mailed within 30 days; BigXwell's is one year. Buy the 12 unless you already have a reel and thin covers keep tearing on your pool.

Pro review “Kathryn has used this pool cover for over a year, and she can now keep her pool open during the chillier months.”— Jeremy Laukkonen (tester: Kathryn), The Spruce
- Best owner rating in the field (4.5★)
- Tested over a year by The Spruce: "It still works just as well one year later, with no signs of deterioration or wear."
- 16 mil resists rips better than the thinner blankets
- Heavy and stiff: "it take more than one person to get it off the pool!!!" "stiff as cardboard when received"
- About $99 a season at a 2.5-season life — twice our pick
- One-year warranty, and the Amazon seller (WOWELL DIRECT) does not carry the brand's name
Weight and stiffness, not early failure: "This is very stiff- well made but it take more than one person to get it off the pool!!!" "Product stiff as cardboard when received. Three weeks later after using on pool the cover is just as rigid & useless using the new pool reel we bought." Life lands at the bubble-cover norm: "Lasted only two short Maine summers... I contacted customer support of the manufacturer a d they never returned my email."

Blue Wave 12-mil Solar Blanket, 16×32 Rectangle (Blue)
Cheaper per season, if it lastsYour pick if an in-ground rectangle where you want the lowest cost per season and a cover one person can still pull off by hand.
- Cheaper per season than the BigXwell on paper — about $58 a season at a 2.5-season life
- Sold and shipped by Amazon.com
- 12 mil: the thickness Trouble Free Pool's admin settled on after owning a 16 — light enough to handle
- Nine of its ten newest critical reviews (read 2026-10-25) are covers that fell apart inside one or two seasons, and 19% of its ratings are one or two stars
- Bubbles shed in one to two seasons, like every bubble cover: "Lasted 15 months." "it lasted 1 1/2 years"
- The warranty covers only delamination and seam failure, needs a mailed registration card within 30 days, and is void above 90°F water
- A solar cover is not a winter or safety cover
- Its rating count jumped from 1,141 to 2,518 in a month on the same listing, so the number may now pool more than this size
The bubbles go first, at one to two seasons, and the warranty is hard to reach: "We bought 8/6/25 - as of September 2026 it is falling a part. The little round air bubbles are coming apart and float on the top water." "Lasted 15 months." "it lasted 1 1/2 years." "Tore in half by the second year of use." On the warranty: "Tried to contact both the seller and manufacturer about the warranty multiple times and did not receive any response."

FAQ
Blue Wave 12-mil or BigXwell 16-mil?
Blue Wave's 12-mil for most in-ground pools. It costs about half as much per season of use, it is light enough for one person to pull off, and its warranty runs five years pro-rated if you mail the registration card within 30 days. BigXwell's 16-mil is the better-rated cover and The Spruce's tester used it for over a year, but it is heavy and stiff, and its warranty is one year. Buy it if you have a reel and thin covers keep ripping.
Does a 16 mil solar cover last longer than a 12 mil?
Not by much, on the owner evidence. Thickness resists rips and tears, but the bubbles fail first, and owners on Trouble Free Pool report the same two-to-three-season life from both grades. BigXwell's 16-mil critical reviews report about two seasons; Blue Wave's 12-mil reviews report 15 months to two years.
