Most “best sand filter” lists are written for someone starting from nothing. This one is not. It is for the person whose pump is perfectly good and whose tank has failed, cracked, or simply run out of filter area — and who wants to buy the tank on its own.

That is a genuinely different purchase, and it is oddly hard to shop. A bare tank is defined by what it lacks, so the usual ways of finding things don’t work: Amazon’s own sand filter best-seller list contains zero bare tanks, because a replacement part never accumulates enough sales to chart against a first-time system purchase. Two thirds of that list isn’t even filters — it’s bags of sand. The listings that do sell bare tanks look almost identical to the complete systems sitting beside them, which is the same trap our above-ground sand filter systems guide was built around, running in reverse. There, buying the tank alone ruins the purchase. Here, the tank alone is the purchase.

So we scanned the field properly, read every contender’s owner base signed in, and found something no rival comparison mentions: not one maker in this category publishes a rating that describes the tank you actually receive. Here’s the ladder, smallest to biggest, and what each one is actually for.

The columns that decide a bare tank are not the ones rivals print. Capacity claims here are unreliable and micron ratings are a dealer convention no maker publishes, so we compare on what is verifiable: what the listing actually contains, how the rating is built, who sells it — which turns out to decide your warranty — and what the owners who left a bad review were complaining about.

We had this tank as the page’s SKIP, and the reason was the seller, not the tank. Re-read on 25 October 2026, the evidence points the other way. Its rating describes one 16 in. tank and nothing else, 4.4 stars from 51 people. In five years it has drawn two written critical reviews, from 2021 and 2023, and 9% of its ratings sit at one or two stars, a cleaner record than the FibroPool beside it. And it is now the cheapest genuine tank on this page at $149.99, under the XtremepowerUS.

We rank on the owner record and treat a warranty as a disclosure, so it takes the belt — with two catches we would rather you hear from us.

The first is parts. One of its two critical reviews is the most relevant complaint in this whole category: a valve handle that broke after one season, a replacement that cost more than the filter, and, in the owner’s words, “it is NOT a universal fitting. The replacement I bought does not fit.” On a tank you are buying to fit equipment you already own, check what a replacement handle costs before you need one.

The second is paperwork. It is sold by STL PRO, Inc., a marketplace seller in St. Louis, and Raypak’s warranty terms reserve the right to reject unauthorised internet sites and marketplace storefronts. Nothing on the listing says this seller is authorised, so buy it as if the tank has no warranty. And at our read there were two left.

FibroPool held this page’s top slot until October 2026 on a quality nothing else here has, and it is not a spec. Its warranty still works.

That sounds like a small thing until you look at what the rest of the category does. Hayward’s W3 prefix — on every ProSeries tank sold through this channel — is not a model variant, it is the online warranty tier: roughly one year of parts and no labour. Pentair’s own document drops an online purchase to one year parts only, in its words, “even from Authorized Pentair Online Resellers.” Raypak reserves the right to reject unauthorised internet sites and marketplace storefronts. FibroPool sells direct, and its Amazon listing is FibroPool’s own storefront, so the warranty you read is the one you have. On a pressure vessel whose entire failure mode is leaking, that is the difference between a bad season and a bad afternoon.

It also fits the most buyers. One listing carries 14, 16, 18 and 21 inch tanks, and the 14 inch — at about $179.95 — is the smallest genuine bare tank we found anywhere in the category. It is one of only two listings here that states the pump match in its own bullets (up to 1.5 HP), which is exactly the number you need when you are matching a tank to a pump you already own.

Not for you if: you want the number to be impressive. Its 63 ratings are pooled across all four diameters, which by our own bar is early data, and the XtremepowerUS below both out-rates it and does so on a cleaner base. And the tail, though only four critical reviews are written (13% of its 63 ratings are one or two stars), contains the one card that goes straight at our reason for picking it: a 2026 owner who could not reach support at all, writing that he had sent “numerous emails, called their phone” and could not get help. A warranty is only as good as the company answering the phone. On the record alone it no longer leads: 13% of its ratings are one or two stars, against 9% for the Raypak, and three of its four written critical reviews are a unit that arrived defective, incomplete or leaking. Buy it for the warranty, if a warranty is what you are buying.

Best value, and the cleanest number here: XtremepowerUS 16 in.

At about $199.95 it costs $50 more than the Raypak and out-rates it — 4.6 stars, on the only kind of base in this category worth quoting. There is no size ladder pooled into that number. It is 66 people rating one 16 inch tank.

It is also, by some distance, the most honest listing here. Its own bullet says “Pump not included. Pump is Required,” where several rivals leave you to work it out. It publishes capacity, flow rate, media weight and physical dimensions where the legacy brands publish marketing copy and nothing else.

Which makes it worth applying our own sizing rule to its own numbers. The listing claims 21,000 gallons and 2,100 GPH. A 21,000 gallon pool needs roughly 2,625 GPH to turn over in eight hours, so those two figures do not agree with each other: at its stated flow, this tank is a ten-hour turnover on the pool it claims to cover. That is not dishonesty so much as the industry’s standard optimism about capacity, and it is exactly why we size on flow rather than on the gallon number. Treat it as a tank for a pool nearer 17,000 gallons and it is excellent.

The catch: 66 ratings is early data however clean it is; support is email-only with no phone number, which one 2025 owner discovered while his tank was leaking; and there is no warranty story at all, because it is sold by a marketplace seller rather than by XtremepowerUS.

If you want to know what actually happens to a sand filter tank over years, this is the only listing in the category with enough owners to tell you. 1,839 ratings — and zero of them are Amazon Vine free-product reviews, with every visible reviewer a verified purchaser. For a legacy brand at this volume that is a genuinely clean base, and it deserves saying, because the padding is real elsewhere in pool gear.

The pooling is the problem instead of the padding. That 1,839 spans the 16, 18 and 21 inch tanks on one listing, and in the visible sample the 18 inch actually dominates — so the number is not a read of the 16 inch we are pointing you at.

And what the depth reveals is the reason this post keeps returning to warranties. We ran the owner complaints two ways: sorted by helpfulness, which tells you a theme exists, and sorted by recency, which tells you whether it is still happening. The helpfulness view suggests an old story about tanks splitting at the seam near the valve neck, reported from 2017 onward. The recency view tells a sharper one. Every one of the ten most recent critical reviews is dated 2024 to 2026, and six of them are not about the tank failing at all — they are about the warranty not paying. One is a customer of thirty-five years across three pools, whose tank cracked at one year, who completed every warranty requirement and was denied with no explanation. Another describes being passed back and forth between Amazon, Hayward, and Asurion — Amazon’s third-party extended warranty — with each saying it was someone else’s problem.

You do not even have to have a warranty claim to meet the channel. A July 2026 owner of the 16 inch found two bolts missing from the flange that holds the control unit to the tank, and went looking for them: “I went to my order on Amazon, I was referred to Hayward Tech Support, they told me the part I needed to request, but said they do not deal with consumers, so I needed to go back to Amazon. What a cluster… Obviously poor Quality Control, Not good enough for a $400.00 unit.” He solved it himself with stainless bolts from his local hardware store.

When a 21 inch tank cannot keep up, this is the step up: 24 and 27 inch, on a 1,711-rating base that is just as unpadded as its smaller sibling’s. Sold, for what it is worth, by an actual pool retailer rather than a general marketplace reseller.

The honest note is that within one brand, the bigger rung is the weaker one. Its critical share is 8.2% against the 16 to 21 inch listing’s 4.6% — the higher of the two Haywards — and it carries a defect the smaller tank does not. Every owner report naming the drain plug is dated 2026, and one of them explains the mechanism precisely: the threads are inline rather than angled, so, in his words, “a proper leak free seal is impossible.” A separate 2025 owner found the internal laterals not fully engaged from the factory, dumping sand into his pool on the first run.

Both are things you can check on delivery, before the sand goes in, which is the practical advice this post can give you that a spec sheet cannot.

Every other rating in this roster is a compromise of some kind. This one is not: 4.6 stars from 30 people, all rating the same 22 inch tank, no diameters or valve sizes or dealer SKUs folded in. It is sold by Amazon directly rather than a rotating cast of marketplace sellers, and there is exactly one critical review on the whole listing.

Which is a mention rather than a belt, and we want to be clear why. Thirty ratings is under our own hundred-rating bar for treating a number as evidence, and one critical review is thin evidence, not a clean bill of health — with a base this small, the absence of complaints tells you very little. Stock has read “only a few left” on every check we have made. And Pentair’s own warranty wording gives an online buyer one year, parts only.

If the 22 inch size is what you need and it is in stock when you look, it is a good tank with the most trustworthy small number in the category.

On price it is the obvious way into a 24 in. in-ground tank: $370, a little over half what the Hayward W3S244T costs, with a 6-position valve and a base in the box and a published three-year tank warranty where Hayward’s online tier gives one.

Then read what its owners report. Of its ten newest written critical reviews, read on 25 October 2026, nine are the tank body failing: “It lasted one year and then started leaking from underneath”, “Not even two seasons and professionally winterized and it split the side wide open”, “Had this filter less than 2 years and it is leaking badly at the seam.” 22% of its 388 ratings are one or two stars, the worst share of any tank on this page.

The warranty does not rescue it. Rx Clear’s own document pays in full only in year one, then 35% and 10%, with no labour, and one 2026 owner who sent photos of a split side was told it was not covered. A 24 in. tank holds 300 pounds of sand and is meant to last a decade; this one’s newest owners measure it in seasons.

Nobody sells a rating that describes the tank you receive

This is the finding that reframes the whole category, and it is worth understanding before you compare any two star averages here.

• The two deepest bases pool themselves out of usefulness. Hayward’s 1,839 and 1,711 are the best-proven numbers in the category, and neither describes one filter. They span diameters. The 24 inch listing also spans valve sizes and the non-W3 dealer version of the same tank — so dealer-channel buyers and online-channel buyers, who receive materially different warranties, are rating into a single pool.
• The only clean single-model bases are too thin to lean on. Pentair’s 31 ratings, the Raypak’s 51 and XtremepowerUS’s 66 are the only numbers here that describe one tank, and all three sit under our hundred-rating bar.
• One brand’s “tank” is sold as a kit. The Rx Clear Radiant listing titled “24 Inch Tank” names every one of its sizes a “Kit”, and its one rating pools four tank sizes, 16 to 24 inches. Read the 24 in.’s own reviews (123 of them) before its 388-rating average.
• And one brand lists the same tank twice. We found an in-ground line sold under two listings by the same seller, carrying two separate review pools 0.8 stars apart — 4.4 from 46 people on one, 3.6 from 75 on the other. Combined, that tank rates 3.90, which is below the floor we require. Cite the flattering listing and you would recommend it; read both and you would not. It is not on this page for that reason.

The defence is simple and takes thirty seconds. Before you trust a star average on a filter tank, open the size dropdown and see how many products are pooled into it, and search the seller’s other listings to see whether the same tank appears twice at a different price. Then rank on what cannot be pooled: valve type, mount, port size, and warranty channel.

And almost nobody independent has tested these at all

We went looking for professional reviews of every tank on this page, because where a credentialed tester has put hands on a product we would rather show you their verdict than our reasoning. For this category there is essentially one, and it does not cover the tanks we recommend.

Bob Vila’s Best Pool Filters of 2026 is the only hands-on test we could find — the outlet says it tested three filters in real-world conditions, under named bylines — and the sand filter it tested is the Hayward ProSeries at 18 inches, which it named “Best Bang for the Buck” with published sub-scores for installation, performance, maintenance and value. That is a genuine result and it is worth knowing. It is also not a test of the 16 inch or the 24 inch we card, and we are not going to relabel it as one.

Everything else that presents itself as a review of these tanks is a retailer’s own blog or an affiliate roundup claiming a 90-day test that plainly never happened. So there is no expert consensus to report here, and we would rather say that than manufacture one out of three sources that are selling you the product. What you have instead is what this page is built from: the owner bases, read one at a time, with their composition disclosed.

Match the tank to the pump you already own

You are not buying a filter system. You are buying one half of one, and it has to fit the half you have.

Size on flow, not on diameter. Work out what your pool needs to turn over in about eight hours — gallons ÷ 480 gives you the GPM — and compare that against your pump’s real output. The failure mode people miss is over-pumping: force more flow through a sand bed than it was designed for and you channel the media, which cuts a path straight through the sand and filters worse than it did before. A bigger tank is generally forgiving; a bigger pump is not. Our pool pump sizing calculator does the arithmetic.

Then check three fitment details before you order, because these are what actually strand people:

1. Valve position count. Six-position and seven-position multiports are not interchangeable in habit or in plumbing, and a four-position valve drops functions you may currently rely on.
2. Top-mount versus side-mount. This changes the plumbing run and whether the tank fits the space you have. Every tank on this page is top-mount; Hayward’s 30 inch is side-mount, and that is a different installation.
3. Port size. Most of these are 1.5 inch, and most of the trouble happens when someone assumes.

And take the warning from the Raypak review seriously as a general rule: check that replacement parts for the tank you choose are actually available and actually universal, because a valve handle that costs more than the filter and does not fit is a way to lose a tank that is otherwise fine.

Everything here leaks somewhere

We read the critical reviews on every tank on this page, and the same four failures appear across every brand and every price point from $149.99 to $689.

No brand here is exempt. Among the tanks we recommend the rate is low — one- and two-star shares from 5% to 13% — so there it is not a reason to pick one tank over another; the Rx Clear, at 22% with the tank body itself failing, is the exception and the SKIP. It is the category’s cost of entry, and the useful response is practical: when the tank arrives, check the drain plug seats and seals and look at the laterals before you put 200 pounds of sand on top of them. Both problems are trivial while the tank is dry and genuinely expensive afterwards.

And a bare tank ships empty — the media is a separate purchase. Fill it with the grade the manuals name: Hayward and Pentair both specify No. 20 silica sand at .45–.55 mm, or recycled glass at about 80% of the sand weight. One more category-wide annoyance worth knowing about in advance: the instructions are bad everywhere. Owners of two different brands here make the same complaint — the paperwork does not identify which port is inlet, which is flush and which returns to the pool. Photograph your existing plumbing before you take it apart.

Before you open the tank: a pool filter runs under pressure, and trapped air can send the lid off with real force. Switch the pump off at the timer or breaker and open the air relief valve before you touch the clamp or the lid.
