Don’t buy the tank without the pump

The single most expensive mistake in above-ground sand filters is buying a filter-only listing by accident. A “sand filter” can mean the whole system or just the tank, and the titles barely distinguish them. Two rules keep you safe:

• Confirm the listing includes the pump. Look for “system,” “with pump,” or a horsepower rating in the title. If it just says “sand filter” and a tank size, assume it’s the tank alone. The bare Hayward W3S180T is filter-only; the complete kit is the W3S180T93S. Rx Clear sells both a complete Radiant system and a bare tank at look-alike titles.
• A complete system is pump + tank + valve. Every pick in this guide is verified complete — you add media and you’re running. A filter-only tank means separately buying, matching, and plumbing a pump, which rarely saves money once you’ve done it.

How to size and fill a sand filter

Two numbers, then the media:

• Match flow to your pool for an 8-hour turnover. Divide your gallons by 8 to get the GPH you need — a 15,000-gallon pool wants roughly 1,875 GPH, a 20,000-gallon pool about 2,500 (42 GPM).
