An offset smoker is a steel box with a fire beside it, and under $700 the box is the whole question: how much steel, how well the doors seal, and what the maker does when the paint on the firebox burns off. Only one maker on this page prints the thickness of its steel, and the number it prints is 1.2 mm. They all print the weight, and that turns out to be the number that sorts them.

We read five offset smokers on their own Amazon listings on 9 October 2026, signed in, with their critical reviews, after two passes through the field: Amazon’s smoker and charcoal-grill best-seller lists, eleven searches, and the offsets sold only at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart and Academy. We read each maker’s spec table and warranty page the same day, raw, and every credentialed review we could reach, to see which pit each outlet actually cooked on. One of the most-recommended offsets under $500 has been quietly re-made, and the one the best-known smoker site most wants you to avoid is still sold by Amazon itself.

The short version:

🏆 Best overall — Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn: 751 square inches of grate on a 237.7 lb pit, the most steel per square inch we carded, 4.4★ across 56, sold by Amazon at about $630. The catch: it leaks out of the box and the firebox paint blisters, so budget a weekend and a roll of gasket.

💵 Best value — Oklahoma Joe’s Highland (24203001): the re-issued Highland, 616 square inches on 156 lb, 4.7★/64, about $375 from Amazon, back in stock there when we re-read it on 17 October, and non-returnable.

📏 Steel on the label — Captiva Designs Large: the only maker here that prints its thickness, 1.2 mm on the body and 3 mm on the lids, 551 square inches, about $441. Its 4.4★ across 377 is shared with two other smokers, and no warranty document exists for it anywhere we could find.

🔥 Grill first — Royal Gourmet CC1830S: a 45 lb barrel charcoal grill whose side box holds 1.5 lb of charcoal, 4.3★ across 7,259, about $144. A grill that smokes a little, not a smoker.

⛔ SKIP — Char-Griller Smokin’ Pro: 3.8★/95 with 14% one-star, rated one star by AmazingRibs, and singled out by name when its buying guide asks you not to buy a cheap offset. The best warranty here sits on the hardest pit to run.

Billed Lightweight — every smoker here streets under $700. Ratings read live on Amazon, 9 October 2026.

How to read the ratings on this page. Every rating is an Amazon base we read ourselves, signed in, on 9 October 2026, with its critical reviews. No visible review card on any of the five listings came from the Vine programme. The two Oklahoma Joe’s bases are small (56 and 64) and every visible card on both is a US verified purchase; the Royal Gourmet and the Char-Griller show reviews from outside the US and are flagged global on their cards. The Royal Gourmet’s base is huge, and most of it describes grilling, not smoking — read it as a grill’s rating. The Captiva’s is pooled: one count and one histogram cover three different smokers on its listing, and its card says so.

Steel per square inch: the spec only one maker prints

Four of the five makers on this page describe their steel as “heavy-gauge” or “heavy duty” and print no gauge or thickness on their own pages. The fifth, Captiva Designs, prints it on its listing — “the body steel thickness reaches 1.2mm, and the lids even reaches 3mm” — which is roughly 18 gauge on the body. Every maker prints a weight and a primary grate area, and the ratio between the two is the closest thing to a steel spec a buyer can get without a micrometer:

SmokerWeight (maker)Primary grateSteel per sq in
Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn237.7 lb751 sq in0.32 lb
Oklahoma Joe’s Highland (24203001)156 lb616 sq in0.25 lb
Captiva Designs Large (1.2 mm body)117 lb (listing)551 sq in0.21 lb
Char-Griller Smokin’ Pro103 lb580 sq in0.18 lb
Oklahoma Joe’s Laredo 1100 (not carded)94.97 lb558 sq in0.17 lb
Royal Gourmet CC1830S45.2 lb475 sq in0.10 lb

It is a rough measure — a heavy cart or cast-iron grates adds weight that is not steel — but the order it gives is the order the owner records give. The lighter the pit, the more of its critical reviews are about warping, gaps and paint. The Barbecue Lab makes the same point in its buying advice: “a heavier grill will retain heat better than a grill constructed with thinner metal.”

Watch the big number in a name, too. The Laredo 1100 is sold on its 1,100 square inches; Oklahoma Joe’s own spec table splits that into 558 square inches of primary grate and a 542-square-inch warming rack.

What AmazingRibs actually says about cheap offsets

The most-quoted line in offset buying advice comes from AmazingRibs’ charcoal and wood smoker guide, last modified on 7 October 2026, and it says three things, not one. It names names: “I do not recommend any small inexpensive offsets. I especially mean the Brinkmann Pitmaster, Brinkmann Smoke ‘N Pit Professional (a.k.a. SNPP), Char-Broil Silver Smoker, Char-Broil American Gourmet, and especially the Char-Griller Smokin Pro.” It draws a lower line: “The more expensive heavy-duty offsets, let’s say $500 and up, are fine cookers, but still require more skill than other designs.” And further down the same page it raises the bar: “please do not by an offset smoker unless you spend about $1,000” (their typo).

So under $700 you are inside AmazingRibs’ “fine cooker” band only at the top of it, and outside its $1,000 line everywhere. The honest version of that advice for this price class is the table above: buy the heaviest pit you can afford, and expect to seal it.

Which Highland are you buying?

Oklahoma Joe’s re-made the Highland. The pit on its store today is 24203001: 616 square inches of primary grate, 879 in total, 156 lb. The Highland most reviews describe is the earlier 15202031: Smoked BBQ Source’s 2022 test lists 619 square inches and 178 lb. Both are traditional offsets with a two-year warranty, and both are called “Highland” on Amazon.

On Amazon the difference is the seller. The current 24203001 (the listing we card) is sold by Amazon at $375, with four marketplace sellers on the same page asking far more. The older 15202031 has its own listing with the deeper base, 4.6★ across 522, sold by a third-party retailer, UnbeatableSale, at $589.12. Oklahoma Joe’s warranty page is direct about sellers like that: products from “unauthorized sellers, unauthorized marketplaces, third-party resale platforms, liquidation channels, or sellers that cannot verify authorized distribution may not be eligible for warranty coverage.” Buy the Highland from Amazon itself or from oklahomajoes.com.

The warranty, and who can claim it

SmokerTermWho can claimWhat it leaves out
Oklahoma Joe’s (Longhorn, Highland)2 years on grate, lid/firebox and other partsThe original buyer, from Oklahoma Joe’s or an authorized seller; proof of purchase requiredUnits from unauthorized marketplace sellers “may not be eligible”
Char-Griller Smokin’ Pro5-year burn and rust-throughThe original purchaser; the grill must be registered“Surface rust”, scratches, dents, corrosion, discoloring by heat
Royal Gourmet CC1830S1 year, fullOriginal retail purchaserThe paint finish (“it may burn off during normal use”) and rust
Captiva Designs LargeNone published—No warranty document on any Captiva Designs site we could reach; the listing promises customer service “within 24 hours”

The longest term is on the pit we skip, and that is worth slowing down for. Char-Griller’s five years covers the steel burning or rusting through; the problems owners report on a new Smokin’ Pro are parts that do not line up, a warped barrel and finish that bubbles, and one owner in July 2026 says Char-Griller answered a claim for a bubbled lid that “we cooked the grill too hot.” A long warranty on the failure that comes last is worth less than it reads.

Recalls

No recall covers any smoker on this page. We queried the CPSC recall database for each brand on 9 October 2026: Oklahoma Joe’s, Char-Griller and Captiva Designs (and its seller, PHI VILLA) return none, Royal Gourmet’s one recall (20-178, 2020) is a propane gas grill sold at Wayfair, and none of the nine Char-Broil recalls (Oklahoma Joe’s parent) is an Oklahoma Joe’s offset. The paint complaints in every critical tail below are a finish problem, not a recall.

Pros
  • 237.7 lb on 751 square inches of grate — 0.32 lb of pit per square inch, the most of any smoker we carded, and mass is what holds an offset's temperature steady
  • The Barbecue Lab, cooking on six offsets side by side, called it "probably one of the easiest smokers to run" of the group
  • A firebox big enough for full-size splits, by that same test, so you are not cutting wood down to fit
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon, which Oklahoma Joe's warranty counts as an authorized source
Cons
  • It still leaks out of the box: the critical reviews describe gaps at the firebox joint and doors that do not seal, and owners who rate it highly list the gaskets, clamps and baffles they added
  • The paint on the firebox blisters at normal smoking heat — an owner saw it bubble and peel on the first cook at a 275°F target
  • Assembly and quality control are uneven: three owners in 2026 report missing parts, bolts left out at the factory, or a firebox not fully secured to the chamber
  • Two years of warranty, and Oklahoma Joe's own page says units from unauthorized sellers or marketplaces may not be eligible
  • There is no ash tray, by The Barbecue Lab's account, so cleanup means scooping the firebox
What owners complain aboutTheme

Leaks and finish, not cooking. Owners describe doors that are "a little off" and will not seal, firebox gaps, factory paint that "started to blister and peal" at a 275°F target, and assembly problems: "the legs separated from the rear of the smoker because the bolts to secure them were not put in" and a smoke box "not secured to the main chamber completely". Older critical reviews (2019–2021) report warped fireboxes and owners welding the seams.

The most pit for the money under $700, measured the only way the makers allow: 237.7 lb on 751 square inches of primary grate, 0.32 lb of smoker per square inch, about a quarter more than the Highland and close to twice the Smokin’ Pro. That mass is what keeps an offset’s temperature from swinging every time a split catches. The Barbecue Lab, which cooked on six offsets side by side, found it “probably one of the easiest smokers to run” of the group and its firebox big enough for full-size splits. It holds 4.4 stars across 56 Amazon owners, every visible review a US verified purchase, and Amazon sells and ships it at about $630. Oklahoma Joe’s own list price is $730, on a sale that ends 14 October.

The owners who rate it five stars tell you what it takes: “Hard to beat for the price. Just be sure to seal it up well or you won’t get good fire management,” wrote one in March, and then listed the lid clamps, gaskets, sealant and baffle he added.

Not for you if: you want to cook the day it arrives. All nine critical reviews trace back to leaks, finish and assembly: doors that are “a little off”, firebox paint that “started to blister and peal” at a 275°F target, legs that “separated from the rear of the smoker because the bolts to secure them were not put in”, and a firebox “not secured to the main chamber completely.” It weighs 237.7 lb, and the warranty is two years.

Pros
  • The same maker and the same 2-year terms as the Longhorn for a good deal less money
  • Owners describe it as sturdy and "thicker gauge steel" than the thin offsets they learned on
  • Its 2026 critical tail is two reviews out of 64 ratings
  • Sold by Amazon itself; the four marketplace sellers on the same listing all ask far more
Cons
  • Stock has been patchy: Amazon and oklahomajoes.com both showed it out of stock on 2026-10-09; both had it again on 2026-10-17, with Amazon quoting delivery 9 to 18 days out
  • Amazon lists it as non-returnable, citing hazardous-materials shipping rules
  • Not the Highland most reviews describe: the older 15202031 had 619 sq in and 178 lb by its reviewers' spec tables, this one has 616 and 156
  • Both 2026 critical reviews: paint peeling from the firebox within weeks, and a new slide-out ash catcher that lets air rush into the fire if anything sits under it
  • Owners who rate it five stars still list the mods: gaskets, a charcoal basket, a baffle and a stack extension
What owners complain aboutTheme

Finish and the new ash drawer. One owner: "5 weeks and the paint is peeling", a bent lid, rust in the exhaust lid and metal "bending with the heat", with the maker offering a gasket. Another, coming from the older Highland: the new slide-out ash catcher will not close "if even a TINY PIECE of anything at all is in between", letting air into the charcoal side "at a high rate of speed".

The same maker, the same two-year terms and the same traditional layout as the Longhorn on a smaller, lighter pit: 616 square inches on 156 lb, 0.25 lb per square inch. Its owners are the happiest on this page — 4.7 stars across 64, two critical reviews in total — and the praise is about the steel: “very sturdy and thick steel”, and from an owner who learned on a thin pit, “This one is thicker gauge steel and better put together.” Amazon sells it at about $375.

Its status, plainly: when we read it on 9 October, Amazon’s listing said “Temporarily out of stock” and still took the order, and oklahomajoes.com showed it out of stock too. On 17 October both had it again: Amazon sold it itself, quoting delivery 9 to 18 days out, and Oklahoma Joe’s own store listed it in stock for more than Amazon asks. Amazon also lists it as non-returnable, citing hazardous-materials shipping.

Not for you if: you want the Highland the 2022 reviews describe. This is the re-made 24203001, a little smaller and 22 lb lighter, and its two critical reviews, both from June 2026, are paint peeling from the firebox within weeks and a new slide-out ash catcher that lets air rush into the fire “if even a TINY PIECE of anything at all is in between”. Five-star owners still list the mods: “With a few chamber mods this smoker is awesome and holds temp really well.”

Pros
  • The only smoker we read whose maker prints a steel thickness: "the body steel thickness reaches 1.2mm, and the lids even reaches 3mm"
  • 551 square inches of primary grate, a little less than the Highland's 616
  • Ships with charcoal grates for the main chamber, so it doubles as a charcoal grill
Cons
  • 1.2 mm is about 18 gauge — thin for an offset, and the number explains its tail: the lid gaps, leaks and heat that is hard to hold that owners of this size report
  • Its 4.4 stars are shared with a smaller Medium offset and a Large Vertical smoker on the same listing — one count and one histogram for three different smokers
  • Sold by a third-party seller, PHI VILLA Holding Co., at 75% positive feedback, not by Amazon

The newcomer from our second pass, and the only smoker here whose maker tells you its steel: the listing says “the body steel thickness reaches 1.2mm, and the lids even reaches 3mm.” That is roughly 18 gauge on the body — thinner than “heavy duty” suggests, and it agrees with the weight: 117 lb on 551 square inches, 0.21 lb per square inch, between the Highland and the Smokin’ Pro. It sells for about $441 from PHI VILLA, a third-party seller at 75% positive feedback, and owners of this size like the build: “The build quality is solid, and I love that I can smoke meats and grill them too.”

Two things to know before the stars. Its 4.4 across 377 is one base shared by three smokers on the same listing — this Large offset, a Medium offset and a Large vertical return the same count and the same histogram — so it is not a clean read of this one. And the same 941-square-inch smoker, down to the 551 + 198 + 192 square-inch split and the 123 lb in the detail table, is sold as a Sophia & William by a different seller; we card the Captiva because its listing prints the steel.

Not for you if: you want it sealed, or warranted. All eight critical reviews for this size are leaks and fit: a lid with “maybe an 1/8 inch gap on the curves”, “Not a seal anywhere”, a door that “doesn’t have a good seal so it doesn’t hold the temperature”, and a wheel axle still on back order. Captiva Designs publishes no warranty on any site we could reach. The Highland is more steel per square inch for less money, sold by Amazon itself.

✓ Safety: no active recallCPSC recall API checked 2026-10-09: RecallTitle=Royal Gourmet → 1 record, 20-178 (2020), patio 2-burner propane gas grills sold at Wayfair — not this charcoal grill. One owner calls the paint "dangerous" after it cracked on the first fire; that is a finish complaint, not a recall.

The most-owned smoker we read by a mile, 4.3 stars across 7,259, at about $144, sold and shipped by Amazon. It earns its place as what it really is: a 28-inch barrel charcoal grill, 475 square inches of grate, with a side box you can smoke from or grill on. Its owners mostly grill on it, and as a grill they rate it well: “Really good, not the best, but it does the job.”

What it is not is an offset smoker in the Longhorn’s sense. Royal Gourmet’s own spec sheet gives the side box a maximum charcoal capacity of 1.5 lb, and the whole grill weighs 45.2 lb. That is enough to put smoke on chicken or a rack of ribs, and not enough mass or fuel to hold 225°F through a brisket. Royal Gourmet also flags this model “NEWER MODEL AVAILABLE” on its own store and points to the CC1831S; Amazon still sells the CC1830S new.

Not for you if: you want the paint to last. The ten most recent critical reviews (late August to 5 October 2026) lead with it: “Paint lasted 20 minutes”, peeling “after 6 months and only a few uses”, a chemical smell an owner blames on the paint. One owner’s grill blew over in the wind. Royal Gourmet’s one-year warranty does not cover the paint, and says rust is not a defect.

  • About $300, sold and shipped by Amazon
  • A slide-out charcoal drawer and a removable ash pan
Cons
  • AmazingRibs cooked on it and awarded it 1 star, "not recommended", and its smoker buying guide (last modified October 7, 2026) names the Smokin' Pro as the cheap offset it most wants you to avoid
  • 14 percent of owner ratings are one star, the most of any smoker we carded
  • The 2026 critical reviews are fit and finish: smoke-box bolt holes that do not line up, a warped barrel the grates "barely fit over", missing or wrong parts, and grease leaking from the bottom
  • The warranty excludes surface rust and needs registration, and one 2026 owner says Char-Griller declined a claim for a lid that bubbled on first use as cooking too hot
  • At 0.18 lb per square inch of grate, a little over half the steel of the Longhorn
What owners complain aboutTheme

Build quality has slipped, by owners who bought it before. "I bought this to replace a 6-year-old Char-Griller and the quality is nothing like it used to be. Alignment of the smoke box mounting holes to the grill body is atrocious"; "The grates are much thinner and because of the warped metal of the barrel, the grates barely fit"; missing or wrong parts ("sent 2 left rear legs"); bent parts from thin packaging; grease leaking from the bottom; and one owner whose warranty claim for a bubbled lid was answered that "we cooked the grill too hot".

The steel-man for it is real. It costs about $300, Amazon sells it, it has 580 square inches of grate and a slide-out charcoal drawer, and Char-Griller backs it with five years on burn and rust-through, the longest warranty on this page and one with no seller clause. Owners who bought one twenty years ago still say so.

Those same owners are the problem. 3.8 stars across 95, with 14% at one star, and the 2026 critical reviews are written by repeat buyers: “I bought this to replace a 6-year-old Char-Griller and the quality is nothing like it used to be”, smoke-box bolt holes that would not line up, a barrel so warped the grates “barely fit”, wrong and missing parts, grease leaking from the bottom. “Still a decent grill but not the grill I first purchased twenty years ago,” wrote another in June. And the warranty excludes surface rust and needs registration before a claim.

AmazingRibs cooked on it and gave it one star — “The problem with the Smokin’ Pro and many other cheap offset smokers is they are hard to use” — and its current buying guide singles it out (“and especially the Char-Griller Smokin Pro”) among the cheap offsets to avoid. At 0.18 lb of steel per square inch against the Highland’s 0.25, the Highland is the better pit for not much more money.

The smokers we read and did not card

  • Oklahoma Joe’s Laredo 1100 (26302352) — Oklahoma Joe’s newest and cheapest offset, read on its own listing: 3.4★ across 30, with 29% at one star, and all ten critical reviews written between June and September 2026 by verified buyers: rust on the firebox within two months, leaks, welds “not holding”, firebox drawer guides “such a thin gauge the box just falls out.” Too thin a base to rank, and nothing in it argues for one. Its “1,100” is 558 square inches of grate plus a 542-square-inch warming rack.
  • VEVOR Charcoal Offset Smoker (KY9072) — 4.1★/78 with 13% one-star, sold by Amazon. Its four critical reviews are uneven heat and a charcoal tray an owner says can tip hot coals “all over your feet” if pulled too far. Too thin a base to rank.
  • The older Highland listing (15202031) — 4.6★/522, but the previous generation, sold by a third-party retailer at $589.12. See Which Highland are you buying? above.
  • Char-Griller Competition Pro (2823) — 4.0★/55 with 13% one-star, and “Temporarily out of stock” on Amazon when we read it.
  • Sophia & William 941 — the same smoker as the Captiva Large (same 551 + 198 + 192 square-inch split, same 123 lb in the detail table, same price), sold by a different third-party seller, ACE-H. Its 4.3★/313 also appears on the search cards of two other Sophia & William smokers, so it is pooled too. MFSTUDIO sells the same barrel shape under a third badge.
  • Realcook and SUNLIFER barrel offsets — two more grill-first barrels like the Royal Gourmet, both on Amazon’s Charcoal Grills best-seller list: Realcook 4.1★/404 at 42 lb, SUNLIFER 4.1★/707 at 34 lb, both sold by third-party sellers. SUNLIFER’s ten latest critical reviews are mostly “so small”; Realcook’s four are damage on arrival, a chemical smell and lids that do not close. The Royal Gourmet does the same job on a deeper base, sold by Amazon.
  • Royal Gourmet CC1831S — the maker’s successor to the CC1830S, now on Amazon from Royal Gourmet itself with two ratings. Too new to rank; we will look again when it has a base.
  • Old Country Pecos — the pit owner forums name most often under $700. Academy lists it at 4.1★ across 279, but for in-store pickup only, with shipping out of stock, and it was sold out on Old Country’s own store. No Amazon listing, and Old Country publishes no steel thickness for it.
  • Char-Griller Grand Champ — AmazingRibs gave it a Gold medal after cooking on it, The Barbecue Lab tested it, and forum owners call it the best value in its class: 780 square inches of primary grate on 254 lb, the same steel per square inch as the Longhorn, and 709 reviews on Home Depot when we read it on 10 October. It is out of stock on Char-Griller’s own store and sold as a Home Depot exclusive, and Char-Griller’s own list price puts it in the next weight class up, so it is ruled there, beside the reverse-flow Oklahoma Joe’s.
  • Brinkmann Trailmaster and Nexgrill Oakford offsets — Home Depot-only listings with deep bases on cached copies of their pages; the same block kept us from a same-day read. No credentialed test of either.
  • The reverse-flow Highland and Longhorn — both sell for more on Amazon than any smoker here, so they belong in the next weight class up. The Barbecue Lab’s reverse-flow Highland needed a firebox reading “600-700 degrees” to hold about 275°F in the chamber.

Buying guide: an offset that holds its fire

  • Buy the heaviest pit you can afford. Weight per square inch of grate is the best steel spec on offer, and the lighter the pit, the more of its owner complaints are warping and thin metal.
  • Plan to seal it. Every offset here leaks at the lid or the firebox joint out of the box. High-heat gasket on the lid and firebox is the first mod in nearly every owner’s list; Oklahoma Joe’s sells its own roll.
  • Check every bolt as you assemble. Owners of both Oklahoma Joe’s pits found bolts missing or left loose at the factory, including the ones that hold the firebox to the chamber.
  • Measure at the grate. The Barbecue Lab found the Char-Griller Grand Champ’s lid thermometer reading “significantly higher” than a probe on the grate. Put a probe next to the meat.
  • Keep the firebox paint alive. It will blister at normal smoking heat on every pit here. Owners keep it from rusting with a spray of cooking oil on bare spots, and a cover between cooks.
  • Buy from Amazon itself or the maker. Oklahoma Joe’s warranty may not cover a pit bought from a marketplace seller, and Char-Griller’s needs the grill registered before you can claim.
  • Expect to feed it. The Barbecue Lab’s rule of thumb is more fuel every 30 to 60 minutes; if that sounds like work rather than the point, look at a pellet or electric smoker instead.

What is the best offset smoker under $700?

The Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn: 751 square inches of primary grate on a pit Oklahoma Joe's lists at 237.7 lb, which is 0.32 lb of smoker for every square inch of grate, the most of any smoker we carded under $700. It holds 4.4★ across 56 Amazon owners, Amazon sells and ships it, and The Barbecue Lab, cooking on six offsets side by side, called it 'probably one of the easiest smokers to run.' Plan to seal it: owners who rate it highly list the gaskets and clamps they added.

Oklahoma Joe's Highland or Longhorn: which should I buy?

The Longhorn if you can spend the extra and move a 238 lb pit: 751 square inches of primary grate against the Highland's 616, and 0.32 lb of steel per square inch against 0.25. The Highland if the budget is the deciding line: the current Highland (24203001) holds 4.7★ across 64 owners and costs a good deal less. Both carry the same two-year warranty. Check which Highland you are buying: the older 15202031 is still listed on Amazon by a third-party seller.

Are cheap offset smokers worth it?

AmazingRibs says no below about $500: 'The more expensive heavy-duty offsets, let's say $500 and up, are fine cookers, but still require more skill than other designs', and elsewhere on the same page, 'please do not by an offset smoker unless you spend about $1,000' (their typo). Our read of the owner records agrees on the mechanism: the thinner the pit, the more owners report leaks, warped parts and paint that burns off. Under $700, buy the heaviest pit you can and budget for gaskets.

Is the Char-Griller Smokin' Pro a good offset smoker?

Not by the evidence. AmazingRibs cooked on it and gave it one star, 'not recommended', and its smoker buying guide, last modified 7 October 2026, names the Smokin' Pro as the cheap offset it most wants you to avoid. On Amazon it holds 3.8★ across 95 owners with 14% at one star, and the 2026 critical reviews are fit and finish. It does carry the best warranty here: five years on burn and rust-through, registration required, surface rust excluded.

What mods does a cheap offset smoker need?

Seal it first. Owners of every offset on this page describe smoke leaking at the lid and the firebox joint, and the most common fix in their reviews is high-heat gasket on the lid and firebox. Oklahoma Joe's own 15-foot smoker gasket roll ranked #25 among Amazon's best-selling outdoor smokers on 9 October 2026, above every offset smoker. After that, owners add a charcoal basket for the firebox, a baffle or tuning plates to even out the heat, and a probe at grate level, because lid thermometers read the dome.

Offset smoker or pellet smoker?

An offset if you want to tend a wood fire and you want the smoke: The Barbecue Lab, which tests both, writes that 'Most offset smokers do a better job of infusing food with smoke than pellet smokers.' A pellet smoker if you want to set a temperature and walk away; the same outlet notes an overnight brisket is easier to manage on one. The Barbecue Lab's rule of thumb for an offset is more fuel every 30 to 60 minutes.
