Sand Filter vs. Cartridge Filter for an Above-Ground Pool: Which Do You Need?

Short answer

For an above-ground pool, size the DECISION to your gallons. A cartridge filter is the right call for smaller pools — up to about 10,000–12,000 gallons: it's simpler (no multiport valve), it filters finer out of the box (~10–20 microns vs sand's 20–40), and it wastes no water because you rinse the cartridge with a hose instead of backwashing. The catch is the cartridge is a consumable — you rinse it every couple of weeks and replace it every season or two, and on a busy pool that gets old fast. A sand filter costs more up front and filters a little coarser (unless you run glass media), and it needs backwashing (which wastes 250–500 gallons a time), but its media lasts 3–5 years instead of weeks — so on a bigger or harder-working pool it's cheaper over time and far less fuss. The rough line: cartridge below ~12,000 gallons, sand above it. Both work if you size them right; buy the one that matches your pool, not the biggest one on the shelf.

There are only two filters worth considering for an above-ground pool — a cartridge or a sand filter — and the internet loves to overcomplicate the choice. It isn’t complicated. The right one is set by how big your pool is, and the honest crossover sits around 10,000 to 12,000 gallons. Below that, a cartridge. Above it, sand. Here’s why, and how to be sure which side of the line you’re on — without buying more filter than your pool needs.

The one-line answer

Small pool → cartridge. Bigger or busier pool → sand. A cartridge filter is simpler, filters finer, and wastes no water, which is exactly what a small pool wants. A sand filter costs more up front and needs backwashing, but its media lasts years instead of weeks — so once your pool is big enough that you’d be buying cartridges constantly, sand becomes the cheaper, lower-maintenance choice. How each one actually works

A cartridge filter is a pleated element — think a big paper coffee filter folded into a cylinder — that water passes through, trapping dirt in the pleats. When it’s dirty, you pull it out and rinse it with a hose. There’s no multiport valve, no backwash line, fewer parts to break. It filters fine (roughly 10–20 microns) right out of the box.

A sand filter pushes water down through a bed of media (silica sand, or recycled glass) that traps dirt as the water works through it. When the bed loads up, you backwash — reverse the flow to flush the trapped dirt out to a waste line — which is how it cleans itself. Fresh sand filters a bit coarser (around 20–40 microns), though it filters finer as it seasons, and swapping in glass media brings it down to roughly 5 microns — as fine as a cartridge, or finer.

The three trade-offs that decide it

1. Water. This is the one people forget, and it matters most in Florida and anywhere on restrictions. A sand filter throws away 250–500 gallons every time you backwash — often weekly in swim season. A cartridge backwashes nothing; you rinse the element with a garden hose and lose almost no pool water. Over a summer, that’s real water and real money.

2. The consumable. A cartridge is a consumable — you rinse it every couple of weeks and replace it every season or two, and on a busy pool with a heavy bather load those replacements come faster and add up. A sand filter’s media is the opposite: sand lasts 3–5 years, glass media 5–7+, so once it’s in, you mostly forget it. On a small pool, cheap cartridges are no big deal. On a big one, you’re buying them all the time — and that’s the moment sand wins.

3. Fineness. A cartridge filters finer on day one. A sand filter running plain sand is a touch coarser, but it seasons finer with use, and glass media closes the gap (see what to put in your sand filter). For most owners this is close enough that water use and the consumable cost decide the call, not microns.

So which side of the line are you on?

The crossover is about 10,000–12,000 gallons, but it bends with how hard the pool works:

  • Small pool, light use, or a screen enclosure → cartridge. Simpler, finer, no water wasted. A caged pool sees a lighter debris load, so the element lasts even longer. This is most small round and Intex-style pools.
  • Bigger pool, heavy bather load, or lots of trees → sand. The media lasts years, it shrugs off a heavy dirt load, and you’re not replacing a cartridge every few weeks. This is most 24-foot-and-up pools and any pool that works hard all summer.
  • Right on the line? Lean to the one whose downside bothers you least: hate wasting water and don’t mind hosing off a cartridge → cartridge. Hate fiddling with the filter weekly and don’t mind a backwash → sand.

For the vast majority of above-ground pools the choice is really just cartridge vs sand; DE is an in-ground-pool answer to a problem most above-ground owners don't have.

Does a screen enclosure change which filter I should get?

A little, in cartridge's favor. A screen enclosure blocks most leaves and heavy debris, so the filter sees a lighter load of fine dust and pollen — which means a cartridge element clogs less often and lasts longer than it would on an open pool under trees. If your pool is caged and on the smaller side, that pushes the decision toward a cartridge; a big open pool dropping leaves all season leans back toward sand.
