Five big pellet grills for the cook who feeds a crowd. Every one of them prints a big number on the dial. Only some have had a tester’s thermometer on the grate, and that is how this fight is decided.

This is the Heavyweight class, the top of the pellet ladder. Five grills, one winner, and a job for each.

The short version:

🏆 Best overall: recteq Flagship 1600 ($1,599.99). WIRED measured no more than a 7-degree difference across a 1,667 sq in grate. The catch: 230 lb, and its critical reviews report probes and controllers failing.

🔥 Best for searing: recteq X-Fire Pro 825 ($1,549.99 at recteq). Testers measured searing heat past 1,000°F. The catch: uneven when smoking.

💰 Best value: recteq Backyard Beast 1200 ($1,199.99). A strong owner base and the lowest price here. The catch: no credentialed tester has measured it.

The Max temp column is what each maker prints. Only the X-Fire’s top end has been measured, and no tester has put a thermometer on the Flagship’s, the Backyard Beast’s or the Woodridge Elite’s.

Best overall: recteq Flagship 1600

If you cook for a crowd and want heat that stays even across a big grate, this is the one. WIRED’s Brad Bourque measured “no more than a 7-degree difference while cooking between the center of the smoker and the outer edges of the middle grate,” and its low setting reached about 170°F for heavy smoke. It has 1,667 sq in, and recteq itself sells it on Amazon.

Not for you if: you need to move it or you want a long record. It weighs 230 lb with two drip buckets to empty, recteq offered WIRED its test unit, nobody has measured its 700°F top, and its Amazon critical reviews report probes reading off, units that stopped powering on and slow support. recteq’s warranty runs 6 years but covers parts only, never rust or oxidation, and in its own words carries “no written or implied performance warranty”, so the temperature accuracy that wins it this belt is not something recteq guarantees.

Best for searing: recteq X-Fire Pro 825

The X-Fire is the pellet grill that actually sears. Serious Eats’ steak “ricocheted to 1100ºF,” and Bon Appétit’s laser thermometer, which tops out at 1,000°F, gave an error on the grates. Its two burn pots let you smoke on one side or grill hot across both.

The catch is evenness: Bon Appétit saw smoking temperatures fluctuate up to 20°F with one side 30°F hotter, and Serious Eats found a hot spot. Buy it from recteq: it was $245 more on Amazon when we checked.

recteq X-Fire Pro 825

Best for searing

Your pick if you want a pellet grill that truly sears — testers' steaks went past 1,000°F; it runs uneven when smoking, and it costs less from recteq than on Amazon.

Pro review “When we made steak on it, the grill’s temperature quickly ricocheted to 1100ºF.”— Serious Eats, Serious Eats
Pros
  • Real searing heat: Serious Eats' steak hit 1,100ºF and Bon Appétit's laser maxed out at 1,000°F
  • Two burn pots: smoke on one side, grill hot on both
  • Bon Appétit and Serious Eats both tested it hands-on
  • Heavy stainless build
Cons
  • Uneven when smoking: temps fluctuated up to 20°F and one side ran 30°F hotter (Bon Appétit); a right-side hot spot (Serious Eats)
  • Smoke mode only runs 225–400°F in 25-degree steps
  • On Amazon it was $1,794.99 with one rating when we read it, against recteq's $1,549.99

Best value: recteq Backyard Beast 1200

The Backyard Beast held this belt until today, on its owner base and price. Both still stand: it is the lowest-priced grill here, with 1,220 sq in and recteq’s 6-year warranty. What it has never had is a credentialed tester’s measurement, which is why the Flagship 1600 now leads.

Your pick if you want a big, high-heat pellet grill with a killer warranty — 1,220 sq in, 700°F searing, a 30-lb hopper, and a 6-year warranty at a 4.8★ owner rating; it's heavy and the app is basic.

4.8 · 219 owner ratingsAce Hardware · July 2026
Pros
  • Rock-steady PID temperature — recteq's hallmark (owners report holding within a few degrees)
  • Massive 1,220 sq in cook area + heavy 304-stainless build
  • 30-lb hopper runs up to ~30 hours unattended; tops out ~700°F for searing
  • Legendary customer support, a 6-year warranty, and dual meat probes included
Cons
  • No credentialed tester has measured it; the 700°F is recteq's dial setting
  • Heavy (~150+ lb) and not very portable
  • App and ecosystem less polished than Weber Connect or Traeger
  • Ships direct — some assembly required

Traeger Woodridge Elite

Best for cold-weather cooks

Your pick if you cook through winter and want a pellet grill that holds its set temperature in cold and wind — plus a built-in side burner for the searing the 500°F pellet chamber can't do, and Traeger's WiFIRE app. Buy it from an Authorized Seller or the 10-year warranty doesn't apply.

4.6 · 68 owner ratingsAmazon · 2026-10-14 · early data
Pros
  • Insulated grill body holds its set temperature through cold and wind — the year-round pick
  • Built-in side burner (Traeger's Side Sear Station) adds the high-heat searing the pellet chamber can't
  • 970 sq in on two racks, a 24-lb hopper with a pellet sensor, and a closing storage cabinet
  • WiFIRE app, Super Smoke mode, EZ-Clean grease-and-ash keg, and a 10-year body warranty
Cons
  • 500°F pellet ceiling — the side burner is the workaround
  • Priced at the top of the class — you pay for the insulation, the side burner and the cabinet
  • Critical tail: temperature swings and early electronics failures, with Traeger support the recurring sore point
  • At our September 2026 read the only Amazon offer was a third-party reseller — Traeger's warranty needs an Authorized Seller, so check 'Sold by' or buy direct

Weber Searwood XL 600

The Weber pick

Your pick if you want Weber's proven ecosystem and Connect app in a bigger body — 972 sq in, a 600°F sear, and a solid 4.4★ (87 Amazon reviews; its brand-page figure on Weber's own page); there's no dedicated smoke box.

“It easily has everything you could want if you're looking to dive head-first into pellet grills and have the cash.”— Brent Dirks, How-To Geek
Pro review “Its maximum temperature of 600F/315C is hot enough to get a moderately good sear, although charcoal and gas grills will do better.”— Peter Wolinski, Tom's Guide
Pros
  • Solid 4.4★ from Amazon owners (its brand-page figure on Weber's own page)
  • 600°F DirectFlame searing plus clean smoke — a true all-rounder
  • Weber Connect app, two probes, and a built-in pellet fuel gauge
  • Trusted Weber build and support; 5-year cookbox warranty
Cons
  • 972 sq in of cook area
  • Testers have only read its own display; the smaller Searwood 600 measured uneven (about 15°F under the setting, about 50°F front to back)
  • 11 percent of its Amazon ratings are one-star (error codes, freezes, warranty help)
  • Newer platform — smaller accessory ecosystem than Traeger

What happened to the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36?

It was this post’s smoke-flavor pick until September 2026. Camp Chef has discontinued the whole Woodwind Pro line — the product pages now return 404 and the maker’s own catalogue has shrunk to a single non-Pro Woodwind 24 on pre-order — and its Amazon listing is dead. If you own one, Camp Chef’s Woodwind Pro warranty (6 years body, 3 years electronics, 1 year other parts, replacement only) still stands. If you were shopping for its wood-and-charcoal smoke box, nothing in this tier replaces it; a smoke tube on any of these three gets you part of the way.

How to choose between them

  1. Cooking for a crowd and want even heat? The recteq Flagship 1600.
  2. Want to sear like a grill? The recteq X-Fire Pro 825.
  3. Want the lowest price with a strong owner record? The recteq Backyard Beast 1200.

Spending less? The Light Heavyweight showdown puts the Grilla Silverbac 2.0 against the Traeger Woodridge Pro, and the best pellet grills of 2026 page gathers every tester measurement.

FAQ

What is the best large pellet grill in 2026?

The recteq Flagship 1600. WIRED measured no more than a 7-degree difference between the center and the outer edges of its 1,667 sq in grate, and its low setting reached about 170°F for heavy smoke. It weighs 230 lb, and its critical reviews include probes that read off and units that stopped powering on.

Which big pellet grill sears best?

The recteq X-Fire Pro 825. Serious Eats' steak 'ricocheted to 1100ºF', and Bon Appétit's laser thermometer, which tops out at 1,000°F, returned an error on its grates. Both testers found it uneven when smoking.

Why isn't the Backyard Beast 1200 the winner any more?

Because no credentialed tester has measured it, and the Flagship 1600 has a published measurement of even heat. The Backyard Beast keeps a strong owner base on Ace Hardware and is the lowest-priced grill here, so it stays as the value pick.

Where should I buy a recteq?

From recteq or a seller recteq authorizes. The Flagship 1600 is sold on Amazon by recteq itself. The X-Fire Pro 825 was $1,549.99 on recteq's store and $1,794.99 on Amazon when we read both on October 15, 2026.

Are pellet grills safe?

Yes, with normal care: run it outdoors with clearance from walls and overhangs, keep the firepot and grease tray clean, and don't leave it unattended on high. None of these five has an active CPSC recall (checked October 2026).

Update history
  • October 2026 (2026-10-15) — Re-ruled on credentialed measurements (Brad's go). The recteq Flagship 1600 takes the belt: WIRED measured no more than a 7-degree difference across the grate. The recteq X-Fire Pro 825 joins as the searing pick (Serious Eats 1,100ºF; Bon Appétit's laser maxed out at 1,000°F). The Backyard Beast 1200, never measured by a credentialed tester, becomes the value pick on its owner base. Woodridge Elite and Searwood XL 600 stay; their copy no longer ranks them on unmeasured dial temperatures.
  • October 2026 (2026-10-14) — Re-read the Traeger Woodridge Elite's Amazon listing for the new pellet pound-for-pound page: 4.6 stars across 68 ratings (was 67).
  • October 2026 (2026-10-09) — Weber Searwood XL 600 buy path back on Amazon: the listing is in stock again, sold by Amazon.com (stock-watch alert confirmed by a read). Amazon is the primary button again and the Lowe's link was removed.
  • July 2026 — recteq re-sourced off Amazon (2026-07-20). The 2026-07-19 winners sweep found the Backyard Beast 1200 UNAVAILABLE on Amazon ('we don't know when or if this item will be back in stock', no add-to-cart) with its rating base collapsed to 4.9★/17 — we had been publishing 4.9★/235, which is not re-pullable anywhere. Rather than demote the pick, we found better evidence: Ace Hardware stocks it at $1,199.99 with an active cart and carries 4.8★ across 219 reviews, verified in that page's own aggregateRating JSON-LD. Ace is now the PRIMARY buy link and primary rating source; Amazon is demoted to also-at with an out-of-stock note; Amazon 4.9★/17 kept as a thin secondary. Price corrected: the ~$1,049 in the verdict was a SALE price that is gone — $1,199.99 is confirmed independently at Ace AND recteq.com. The pick stands: it is still the least expensive of the three (Camp Chef ~$1,699) and its owner evidence is now 219 independent reviews rather than 17. Caveat recorded: the Ace link is currently UNMONETISED (Ace runs an affiliate program — find the network and swap in a tracked link); recteq itself has no self-serve affiliate program. Manufacturer model recorded as RT-1200BB.
  • July 2026 — Liveness re-verify (next-oldest-posts audit, 2026-07-27). All three current models, no drift: recteq Backyard Beast 1200 (RT-1200BB) Amazon B0F6VJH59T resolves correctly (primary buy stays Ace $1,199.99); Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36 (Amazon B0FJ32CSPN) = 'Woodwind Pro WiFi 36 Pellet Grill', correct model + live page; Weber Searwood XL 600 (Amazon B0DRWFMQXN) resolves to the Searwood 600 XL 36-in grill (the listing title foregrounds its folding-front-table feature) — no drift, though a quick price-band glance is worth a human confirm. Ratings unchanged (within the 6-month window). No content change; priceChecked → July.
  • July 2026 — Correction (2026-07-27, Brad-confirmed): the Weber Searwood XL 600 Amazon ASIN B0DRWFMQXN is a $99.99 folding FRONT-SHELF ACCESSORY, not the grill — an ASIN drift caught in this audit. De-wired that buy link to #TODO so the card no longer sends buyers to a shelf (it now shows a coming-soon buy state; the grill's weber.com rating + specs are unchanged). Re-wire needs a Brad-confirmed SiteStripe on the live Searwood XL 600 GRILL listing (~$1,199).
  • July 2026 — Resolved (2026-07-27): Brad supplied the correct GRILL SiteStripe — re-wired Amazon to B0CXY8VKMB (title-verified 'Weber Searwood XL 600 Wood Pellet Smoker Grill, 36 in', ~$1,299); buy link live again. Also switched the Weber's displayed rating to the INDEPENDENT Amazon read (4.5★/85), keeping weber.com 4.6★/1,485 as a labeled secondary, and DROPPED the 'most-reviewed / most proven track record' framing — on independent counts Weber's 85 is the SMALLEST base of the three (recteq 219 Ace, Camp Chef 195); the 1,485 was weber.com's own-page number. Weber repositioned as the polished all-rounder (Connect ecosystem + 600°F sear + a solid 4.5★).
  • July 2026 — Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36 owner rating switched to the independent Amazon read (Brad, signed-in, 2026-07-27): 4.3★/27 primary; campchef.com 4.2★/195 (polarized — 131x 5-star, 19x 1-star) kept as a labeled secondary. The honest-catch prose now names both bases. Also cleaned up a leftover false 'deepest owner-review record' line for the Weber XL in the ExpertConsensus split + a stale 'deepest owner track record' FAQ line — on independent counts the recteq (219 Ace) is deepest and the Weber XL (85) is thinnest, so the Weber is framed on its Connect ecosystem + build polish, not owner volume.
  • September 2026 — Weber Searwood XL 600 buy path moved to Lowe's (2026-09-11): the Amazon listing is dead (no buy box, no search hit at the signed-in read); Lowe's carries it in stock at $1,199 sale / $1,299 list (Item #1165975, Model #1500121, verified on the live page). Buyer-first, unmonetised link; Lowe's 4.6/1,946 is syndicated maker data and is not counted. Home Depot does not carry the grill. Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36 confirmed DISCONTINUED at the maker (404, absent from the feed); Camp Chef's only pellet grill is the Woodwind 24 on pre-order at $749.99 clearance, and a 2026-09-04 trade report says the maker looks to be exiting grills — the Camp Chef slot is a roster question awaiting Brad.
  • September 2026 — Roster change (2026-09-11): the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36 is discontinued at its maker (the Woodwind Pro 36 and Pro 24 pages 404, the feed carries only the non-Pro Woodwind 24 on pre-order) and its Amazon listing is dead, so it leaves the roster. Replaced by the Traeger Woodridge Elite after a signed-in Amazon sweep of the Combination Grill-Smokers node (best sellers + new releases), the Outdoor Smokers node and two all-departments searches: the Elite (4.6★/67, $1,799.99) was the only in-tier Traeger with a live listing — the Ironwood XL reads Currently unavailable at 3.9★/121, the Woodridge Pro is resold at roughly $550 over Traeger's list, the Woodridge Pro Plus is out of stock on a Vine-heavy base of 28. Post retitled and moved from /blog/recteq-vs-camp-chef-vs-weber-2026/ with a 301; the old slug named a brand no longer in it.
