A side table beside a lounger has one job, and a small deck box can do it while hiding the pool towels, the sunscreen and the goggles underneath. The question is which box is honest about what it holds, which one survives being opened every day, and which one is a nice-looking drum with a number on it.

We read four small resin boxes on their own Amazon listings on 3 October 2026, signed in, every colour listing of each, with the critical reviews read for each. We read the makers’ own spec tables for interior dimensions and lid ratings, and we read the three outlets that have actually lived with a small Suncast. Then we did the one piece of arithmetic nobody else on page one does: inside dimensions, multiplied, divided by 231. Two labels hold. One matches the outside of the box. And one says 37 when the maker’s own numbers say 29.

The short version:

🏆 Best overall — Keter City 30: 30 gallons that Keter’s own interior dimensions actually hold, a 220 lb lid at side-table height (21.7 in), about $27 in Beige on the deepest base here (4.5★/11,604, no Vine reviews visible). Rain gets in and a full box strains its handles — keep it under the eave.

📏 Smallest footprint — Suncast 22 (SSW600J): 22 honest gallons, a 200 lb lid, a five-year warranty and the highest rating here (4.7★/2,515), tested by Better Homes & Gardens through Iowa storms. Check the bottom panel seats before you load it.

💵 Budget pick — GUNJI 30: about $36, lockable, 4.6★/408. No maker website, no warranty document, and the 30-gallon label is the size of the outside.

⛔ SKIP — Keter Circa “37 gallon”: the handsome round one. Keter’s interior dimensions make it 29 gallons as a cylinder and Keter’s own Amazon data says 26.4 gallons (100 litres) — less than the City holds, at two to three times the price.

Billed Catchweight — compared by the job, not by price. Ratings read live on Amazon, 3 October 2026.

What the label holds: the arithmetic

A gallon label is a claim. The maker’s interior dimensions are the evidence, and a gallon is 231 cubic inches, so anyone can check one in ten seconds. Here is every box on this page, from the makers’ own spec tables where a maker publishes one:

Box (as labelled)Maker’s interior (in)What that holdsOutside of the boxVerdict
Keter City 3021.2 × 16.3 × 20.330.4 gal37 gal (22.7 × 17.3 × 21.7)Label holds
Suncast 22 (SSW600J)20.5 × 15.5 × 1723.4 gal33 gal (22 × 17 × 20.5)Label holds
GUNJI 30Not published — no maker site—30.5 gal (22 × 16 × 20, listing)Label = the outside
Keter Circa 3723.5 round × 15.47 deep29.0 gal as a cylinder42 gal (26.8 round × 17.3)Label overstates by about a quarter

The Circa is the one worth slowing down for. Keter calls it a “round deck box”, and its interior is a cylinder 23.5 inches across and 15.47 deep: π × 11.75² × 15.47 ÷ 231 is 29.0 gallons. Multiply the same three numbers as if the box were square and you get 37.0 — exactly the label. We cannot see how Keter arrived at its figure, so that last step is our inference, not Keter’s statement. What is not an inference is Keter’s own Amazon data on the green Circa listing: “Capacity: 100 liters”, which is 26.4 US gallons. Three numbers from one maker, and the one on the front is the largest.

GUNJI publishes nothing to check, because GUNJI has no website. Its listing gives the outside as 22 × 16 × 20 inches — 30.5 gallons of shell for a box sold as “internal storage capacity of 30 gallons” — so the inside, behind walls you can see in the photos, holds less.

Will your cushions fit?

A side-table box often ends up holding the seat cushions for the loungers beside it. A standard patio dining cushion is 20 × 20 × 4 inches, and it has to either lie flat or stand on edge:

  • Keter City 30: stands on edge (20 in fits under the 20.3 in interior height), about four across the 16.3 in depth. The only box here that takes them unfolded.
  • Suncast 22: neither — 15.5 in deep and 17 in tall inside. One owner: “Will only fit 3 standard cushions - a fourth pushes the lid open.” Another notes the lid’s interior grid is not in the published height.
  • Keter Circa: neither — a 20 × 20 square needs 28.3 in of diameter to lie flat, and the drum is 15.47 in deep. Cushions fold.
  • GUNJI 30: no interior dimensions to check against.

Keter City 30 Gallon Deck Box

Best overall · The default small deck box: 30 gallons that hold up against Keter's own interior dimensions (21.2 × 16.3 × 20.3 in), a 220 lb lid, side-table height at 21.7 in, about $27–47 depending on colour, 4.5★ across 11,604. It is a light snap-together shell — rain-resistant, not waterproof.

Your pick if you want a lidded side table beside a lounger that also swallows the pool towels — 30 gallons that Keter's own interior dimensions actually hold, a 220 lb lid rating, about $27 in Beige, on 11,604 owner ratings — and you will keep it under the eave, because owners say rain gets in and a full box pulls its handles.

“Yes, these make perfect end/side tables for most existing patio furniture, check your furniture height.”— T. Rice, Amazon · Verified owner
Pros
  • The label is honest: Keter's own interior dimensions come to 30.4 gallons for a 30-gallon box, and a standard 20 × 20 in seat cushion fits standing on edge
  • 4.5★ across 11,604 — one model pooled across four colours, every visible review a verified purchase, none from the Vine programme
  • 21.7 in tall with a flat 220 lb-rated lid: side-table height beside most loungers, and Amazon ships it itself
Cons
  • Rain-resistant, not waterproof: owners report towels soaked after storms, and Keter itself calls the box "ventilated" — keep it under an eave
  • A light snap-together shell: recent critical reviews describe sides that "come apart" when the box is full and handles that "ripped free" when it was lifted loaded
  • The lid's hinges and latch are the weak point — one owner's broke after wind caught the open lid, another's latch broke on day one
  • Price depends on colour: $27 to $47 the same day for the same box
  • The brown fades in sun ("no longer brown in just 1 year")
What owners complain aboutDefect reports

Rain and a light shell. "I assure you that this product is not waterproof. When it rains, the towels become extremely wet." Then structure: "If this storage container is the SLIGHTEST bit full, the sides come a part", handles that "ripped free" when an owner lifted it packed with clothes, "Super thin plastic material". Then the lid: "Strong winds opened the cover, and now the hinges are broken", a latch that "broke off the very first day". One owner's brown "faded terribly" inside a year.

620 critical written reviews on the listing (all colours) on 2026-10-03; the ten most recent read (Sep 7–28, 2026), 10/10 Verified Purchase: rain ingress 1, weak or separating shell 4, handles 1, hinges or latch 2, assembly fit 1, fading 1. The box most people buy for this job, and the base says why: 4.5 stars across 11,604 owners, one model pooled across four colours with an identical histogram on every one, every visible review a verified purchase and none from the Vine programme. It is 21.7 inches tall — side-table height beside most loungers — with a flat lid Keter rates at 220 lb, a lockable latch, and an interior that genuinely holds the 30 gallons on the front. Amazon sells and ships every colour itself.

One buying note that is pure money: the four colours are one box, and on the afternoon we read them they ran from about $27 (Beige) to $47 (Mossy Brown). The card links the Beige because it was the cheapest; buy whichever colour is cheapest the day you look.

Owners use it exactly as intended — “these make perfect end/side tables for most existing patio furniture, check your furniture height”, wrote one who bought two as end tables, and the same review admits the panels are “somewhat flimsy… until it’s fully assembled.” No credentialed outlet has tested the City; we searched The Spruce, Better Homes & Gardens, Bob Vila, Popular Mechanics and Good Housekeeping, and found only a Prime Day deal post quoting Amazon reviews.

Not for you if: you want a box that keeps the weather out on its own or one you can lift full by its handles. The ten most recent critical reviews (all from September 2026) are the category’s faults on a light shell: towels “extremely wet” after rain, sides that “come a part” when the box is full, handles that “ripped free” when an owner lifted it packed, hinges broken after wind caught the lid, and a brown that faded inside a year. Keter itself calls the box “ventilated”. It is a side table that stores light things, not a vault. One- and two-star reviews are 7% of the base.

Suncast 22 Gallon Small Deck Box (SSW600J)

Smallest footprint

Your pick if your side-table spot is tight and you want the highest owner rating in the class — 4.7★ from 2,515 owners, a 200 lb lid and Suncast's five-year warranty for about $54 — and you will check the bottom panel seats before you load it, because three owners got one that did not.

Pro review “In fact, this box has held up through strong storms and heavy Iowa winds. The slight lip at the top has made a big difference by sending rainwater down the sides rather than through the top.”— Morgan Bulman, Better Homes & Gardens
Pros
  • 4.7★ across 2,515 on a single-variant listing — every visible review a verified purchase, none from the Vine programme
  • Better Homes & Gardens tested this exact box through "strong storms and heavy Iowa winds" and named it its best budget deck box
  • Five-year limited warranty, the longest on this page, and a 200 lb lid rating Suncast prints on the product page
  • The smallest footprint here at 22 × 17 in, and it snaps together in minutes with no tools
Cons
  • A recurring moulding fault: three owners report a bottom panel that does not fit its slots — one cut the tabs with a hacksaw, another's replacement had the same wrong piece
  • No latch: the lid lifts in wind, and over-filled cushions hold it open ("Will only fit 3 standard cushions")
  • A 20 × 20 in seat cushion will not lie flat or stand on edge — the interior is 20.5 × 15.5 × 17 in, so cushions fold
  • No handles or grip recesses to move it
  • A warranty lid replacement cost one owner $30 in shipping
What owners complain aboutDefect reports

The bottom panel and the lid. Three owners report a base that will not seat: "the bottom piece does not fit. We had to take a hacksaw and cut tabs off", "Ordered a replacement and again, the wrong bottom piece", and a unit "sent repackaged" with the same fault. The lid does not latch: "Lid does not click in. A light wind will blow it open". Size: "Will only fit 3 standard cushions - a fourth pushes the lid open", and the lid's interior grid is not in the published height. One owner paid "$30 shipping" for a warranty lid.

The small one, and the best-rated: 4.7 stars across 2,515 on a single-variant listing, no Vine reviews visible. Suncast’s own page gives a 200 lb lid, interior dimensions that hold the 22 gallons on the label, and the longest warranty on this page — five years limited, registration within 90 days. At 22 × 17 inches it is the box that fits between two loungers where the City will not.

It is also the only box here a credentialed outlet has lived with. Better Homes & Gardens named this exact wicker-front Java box its best budget deck box after testing at home for up to six months: “In fact, this box has held up through strong storms and heavy Iowa winds. The slight lip at the top has made a big difference by sending rainwater down the sides rather than through the top.” (The Spruce and Bob Vila tested Suncast’s 22-gallon box too, but the storage-seat sibling, SS601ST, not this SSW600J — and The Spruce says Suncast “does not list a weight limit”, when Suncast prints 200 lb on the product page.)

Not for you if: you cannot face a moulding fault on assembly day. Three owners in the critical tail got a bottom panel that would not seat — one “had to take a hacksaw and cut tabs off”, another’s replacement “again, the wrong bottom piece.” The lid has no latch (“A light wind will blow it open”), there are no handles, and a warranty lid cost one owner $30 in shipping. The share is small — 2% one- and two-star — but if the base does not click in flat, return it rather than cut it.

Budget pick: GUNJI 30

GUNJI 30 Gallon Small Deck Box

Budget pick

Your pick if you want the cheapest box here that owners still rate highly — 4.6★ from 408 owners at about $36, with padlock holes — and you accept a maker with no website, no published warranty and a seller that charges return shipping.

“Sturdy enough to double as a little side table for drinks as well”— V, Amazon · Verified owner
Pros
  • About $36 for 30 lockable gallons at side-table height
  • 4.6★ across 408, one model pooled across four colours, every visible review a verified purchase, none from the Vine programme
  • Owners use it exactly as a side table: "Sturdy enough to double as a little side table for drinks"
Cons
  • No maker website, no published warranty: the listing is the only document
  • Sold by a Hong Kong reseller (Youmi Electronic Technology) at 75% positive feedback over the last 12 months — not the GUNJI trademark owner
  • The 30-gallon label matches the outside of the box (22 × 16 × 20 in = 30.5 gal), so the inside holds less
  • The lid warps: one owner's "started to warp so the lid no longer fits properly"
  • Lock holes too small for anything but a cable lock, and ants got into one owner's box
  • The seller charges return shipping
What owners complain aboutDefect reports

A thin shell that warps. "Not very sturdy once assembled… doubt plastic hinges will last", "Too thin and Flimsy", and a lid that "started to warp so the lid no longer fits properly". It is "water resistant", one owner stresses, "NOT waterproof", and "the holes to put a lock in are too hard to get a lock in, other than a cheap cable lock". One found ants inside; one was charged return shipping.

The cheapest box here that owners still rate highly: about $36, 4.6 stars across 408, four colours on one base, every visible review a verified purchase. It stands 20 to 21 inches tall with padlock holes, and owners use it the way this page means — “Sturdy enough to double as a little side table for drinks as well.”

What you give up is everything behind the listing. GUNJI has no website — gunji.com is a parked domain, and none of a dozen other domain shapes resolves. The trademark belongs to Ningbo Meiying Household Group in China; the box on Amazon is sold by a different company, Youmi Electronic Technology of Hong Kong, at 75% positive feedback over the last year. There is no warranty document anywhere we could find; Wayfair’s spec field for GUNJI’s 30-gallon box reads both “90 Days” and “No Warranty”. The listing’s own two sets of dimensions disagree, and the 30-gallon label is the size of the shell.

Not for you if: you want recourse. The critical tail is a thin shell — “Too thin and Flimsy”, a lid that “started to warp so the lid no longer fits properly”, lock holes that take only “a cheap cable lock”, ants inside one box — and the seller charges return shipping. At this price that may be a fair trade. Know it is the trade.

Keter Circa 37 Gallon Round Deck Box

SKIP

Your pick if you want a round wood-look drum as a side table more than you want storage — and you can live with 26 to 29 real gallons behind a "37 gallon" label, at two to three times the price of the City 30.

Pros
  • A 308 lb lid rating — the strongest on this page — and Keter sells it as a seat for one adult
  • The round wood-look drum is the best-looking box here, and owners use it as a side or coffee table
  • Keter's current line, sold and shipped by Amazon
Cons
  • "37 gallon" on the label, about 29 in the box: Keter's own interior dimensions (23.5 in round, 15.47 in deep) make a cylinder of 29 gallons — 37.0 only if you multiply them as a square — and Keter's Amazon data says 100 litres (26.4 gal)
  • It holds less than the City 30 and costs two to three times as much
  • 17.3 in tall: below a standard side table, closer to ottoman height
  • A thin rating base — 42 ratings across two colours, with Vine reviews among the visible cards
  • No lock; Keter calls it "ventilated", so rain-resistant, not waterproof
What owners complain aboutDefect reports

Too thin a base for a theme. The two critical written reviews on the current listing: one unit arrived with "a few spots that look like it was beat up", and one owner called it "Way over priced for plastic". A White buyer adds the colour is "definitely light gray or beige not white".

Every showdown names a skip, and this one is the best-looking box on the page. The Circa is a round wood- or rattan-look drum 26.8 inches across with the strongest lid here (308 lb), and owners love it as a side or coffee table. It is labelled 37 gallons. By Keter’s own interior dimensions it holds about 29 as a cylinder, and Keter’s own Amazon data on the listing we link says 26.4 gallons (100 litres) — less than the City 30 holds, at two to three times the City’s price. It is 17.3 inches tall, ottoman height rather than side-table height, it does not lock, and its current listing sits on a 42-rating base with Vine reviews among the visible cards.

If you want a round drum for how it looks, buy it for how it looks and know what is inside. If you want a side table that stores things, the City does the job for less and holds more. (An older Circa listing carries 2,840 ratings, but on a Keter SKU that is not in Keter’s current US line, sold by a reseller; we link the current one.)

The boxes we read and did not card

  • Keter “Premium Everwood 30” — Amazon’s name for Keter’s Signature 30 (part 263744): the City’s 22.7 × 17.3 × 21.7 in shell in a walnut finish with a lock, about $29. Its 4.3★/384 is pooled across a ladder from 30 to 165 gallons; only 44 written reviews are about the 30, and they read like the City’s tail (“no hinges, just plastic holes that go over some shallow stubs”). Same box, thinner evidence.
  • DRATO 30 — the 813 ratings span sizes up to 320 gallons; 16 written reviews are about the 30, and its lid is rated 170 lb.
  • Flamaker 30 — 765 ratings across a 30-to-120-gallon ladder, and none of them on the current 30-gallon listings.
  • Devoko 31 — 145 ratings across a ladder to 100 gallons; four written reviews on the 31, two of them “fell apart”.
  • Suncast’s 30-gallon “End Table” (BMDB3010) — no longer on suncast.com, and at 34 inches long it is a coffee table. Its successor belongs in a coffee-table roundup, not here.

Buying guide: a side table that stores things

  • Measure the height first. A side table should sit within a few inches of your lounger’s arm or seat. The City and GUNJI stand about 21 inches, the Suncast 20.5, the Circa 17.3.
  • Do the 231 arithmetic. Interior length × width × height in inches, divided by 231, is the gallons. If a maker publishes no interior dimensions, the label is unverifiable — treat it as the outside of the box.
  • Read the lid rating as the maker’s figure, not a promise about the edge. Keter and Suncast rate the whole lid (220 and 200 lb); a full box lifted by its handles is a different load, and that is where owners report failures.
  • Buy for rain-resistant, not waterproof. Vents and snap seams let water in. Put it under an eave, bag anything that must stay dry, and tip rain off the lid before opening it.
  • Lock it if children play nearby, and never let a child climb inside. The Circa does not lock.
  • Buy the cheapest colour. On the City, four colours are one box and one rating base, and they were $20 apart on the same day.

Can a deck box be used as a side table?

Yes, if you buy one sized for it. The small boxes on this page stand 17 to 22 inches tall, close to a side table beside a lounger, with flat lids rated 200 to 308 lb by their makers. The Keter City 30 is the one we would buy for the job: 21.7 inches tall, a 220 lb lid, and 4.5★ across 11,604 owners. Put drinks on it, not your weight on its edge: these are snap-together shells, and owners report sides that separate when a full box is lifted.

Is a 30-gallon deck box really 30 gallons?

It depends on the box, and you can check it yourself. Multiply the maker's INTERIOR dimensions in inches and divide by 231. Keter's City 30 comes to 30.4 gallons and Suncast's 22 to 23.4, so both labels hold. The Keter Circa is labelled 37 gallons, but it is round: its 23.5-inch interior diameter and 15.47-inch depth make 29 gallons as a cylinder, and Keter's own Amazon data lists it at 100 litres, 26.4 gallons. GUNJI publishes no interior dimensions, and its 30-gallon label matches the outside of the box.

Are small deck boxes waterproof?

No. Every brand on this page has owners whose contents got wet in rain, and the makers' own words are 'ventilated' (Keter) and 'water resistance' (Suncast). These are snap-together panels with vents and seams. Put the box under an eave or a covered patio if it holds anything that must stay dry, bag cushions and towels, and tip rain off the lid before you open it.

Will a patio cushion fit in a small deck box?

A standard 20 by 20 inch seat cushion fits the Keter City 30 standing on edge (its interior is 21.2 by 16.3 by 20.3 inches), about four across. It will not lie flat or stand on edge in the Suncast 22 (20.5 by 15.5 by 17 inches inside) or in the round Circa (23.5 inches across, 15.47 deep): they have to be folded, and one Suncast owner says it 'will only fit 3 standard cushions'.

Which small deck box has the best warranty?

The Suncast 22: a five-year limited warranty printed on Suncast's own product page, with registration within 90 days. Keter's term is two years (on the Circa's page and the City listing's warranty field; Keter's City page prints none). GUNJI has no website and no warranty document; Wayfair's spec field for its 30-gallon box says both '90 Days' and 'No Warranty'.

What is the best small deck box for the money?

The Keter City 30 at the colour Amazon has cheapest that day — the four colours are one box and one rating base, and they ranged from about $27 to $47 on the same afternoon we read them. The GUNJI 30 is cheaper on average and rated highly, but it comes from a brand with no website or warranty, sold by a Hong Kong reseller at 75% positive feedback.
