The pattern worth seeing: this is a category where the best-seller is also the right answer, which is rare enough to say out loud. The Monterey is the plainest float on the card — no cupholder, no pillow, no clear vinyl — and it outsells and out-rates everything with those features. That matters for one specific reason: a globally pooled base is not interchangeable with a base drawn purely from US buyers. When we rank a robot or a pump, a four-figure US base can outweigh a five-figure global one. The listing sells as “Waterlife”, but the brand field on its own Amazon page reads Aqua LEISURE — the same company that makes the Monterey. At $31.50 it is the most expensive float on this card, and at 3.1★ across 542 owners it is the lowest rated by more than a full star. Every other float here sits at 4.3★ or better. It is 70 inches of clear vinyl with a built-in pillow, and it photographs exactly as well as you would hope — which is the entire case for it once the owner data is on the table.
Not for you if: you have to sit in it. Buy it if you are buying the label and you know that is what you are doing; there is no version of the numbers where this is the better float.

How to pick between four positions you’ll only use two of
The 4-in-1 pitch is real but oversold. In practice most owners settle into two of the four positions and ignore the rest, so pick on the two you will actually use:
- Hammock is the one that matters. Your body sits below the waterline in the mesh, which is the whole reason to buy this shape instead of a flat raft. If you want to be in the water while lying down, this is the position you are buying.
- Lounge chair is the second most-used — upright, head and shoulders out, feet dangling. Good for talking to people on the deck.
- Saddle is the novelty. It works, and almost nobody uses it twice.
- Drifter is a flat raft with a hole in it. Fine, but a plain raft does it better and cheaper.
Size against the person, not the pool. These run 44 to 47 inches long. That is comfortable for most adults and roomy for kids; if you are tall you will hang off the end of the 44-inch Waterlife before you hang off the 47-inch Monterey.
The mesh is the failure point, not the vinyl. On any float built around a mesh seat, the seam where mesh meets shell is what opens first — long before the air chamber punctures. Rinse the salt or chlorine off it, dry it before storing, and keep it off hot concrete coping, which abrades that seam faster than sun does.
