Search for a cover for a rectangular above-ground pool and you will find round covers, oval covers, and people in pool groups asking the same question you are. One of them, verbatim: “I’m having a hard time finding a winter pool cover for my 9 x 18 x 52” rectangular Intex above ground pool. All the covers I find seem to be for oval or round.”

They are not imagining it. No scrim winter cover is made in a rectangle. Robelle, Yankee, all three Blue Wave Arctic Armors — the entire aisle that every “best above-ground pool cover” roundup ranks — is cut round, and two of them also oval. That is the whole ladder. If your pool has corners, none of it fits you at any size you order.

What does fit is a smaller, scruffier field: heavy Oxford-fabric covers held down by ratchet straps or drawstrings, sold by your pool’s two dimensions. This page is that field, read signed-in on 31 August 2026.

The short version:

🏆 Best overall — QH.HOME, at your size: the deepest evidence here and the cheapest way onto a rectangle at 9×18. Its catch is that the cover must be weighted at the edges and the listing never says so.

💪 Toughest fabric — UIRWAY 500D: heavier cloth and leg straps that grip the pool’s own legs, so nothing stakes into the grass. It runs small — size up.

📐 Widest size range — Safana: eighteen cuts, including odd ones nobody else makes, and generously sized. Highest rating on the page and the thinnest, most Vine-padded evidence behind it.

🧊 Biggest rectangles — SIHAIAN 16×32: bought for size, not for score.

⚠️ The trap: order by SHAPE, not by numbers. Some listings sell an 18’×9’ oval and a 9’×18’ rectangular as different options at different prices.

Order by shape, not by numbers

This is the mistake that costs a return. On the QH.HOME listing there is an 18’×9’ (Oval) at $50.99 and a 9’×18’ (Rectangular) at $47.87 — same two numbers, different cut, different price, sitting in the same drop-down. Pick the wrong one and the corners will not reach.

The second rule: covers are sold by your POOL’s dimensions, not the cover’s. The maker adds the overhang. Safana’s 9×18 cover actually measures 11.7 × 20.7 ft. Order 9×18 and let them do the maths.

Between the two, the rectangular ladder runs 7×10, 9×18, 12×24, 16×32 ft on the UIRWAY and 90×60 in, 120×72 in, 16×8, 9×18, 12×24, 16×32 ft on the QH.HOME — which covers essentially every Intex, Bestway and Coleman rectangular frame pool sold. Both are also cut for oval and round, and the QH.HOME sells separate metal-frame and steel-wall cuts of some sizes, so read the wall type in the option name too.

Pros
  • Cut for a 9×18 ft rectangle, so you order your pool's two dimensions rather than guessing at a round size that will not fit
  • Same cover, fabric and tie-down as the round version we rank on this page — the construction is not downgraded for the rectangular cut
Cons
  • The cover MUST be weighted or anchored at the edges and the listing never says so — plan on jugs or anchors from day one
  • Solid fabric, so water pools on top — you still need to pump it off, and it is not a safety cover
  • Its rating is the LISTING's pooled score across every size and shape, not this size's own — see the ratings note

The same coating failure as the UIRWAY, and it leads the tail: the top critical review is a 1-star titled 'Melts/sticks to itself/black marks on pool', posted with video. Then the seams — 'after 2 months the tape that seals over the joint stitching wore out and started to come loose', 'leaking at the seams on top' at 33 days, and an owner who worked out that 'the seams start to stretch and allow the water to seep in'. Third, water pooling: 'it settles water a lot when rain falls', and when you pull the cover off, most of that water ends up in the pool. Consistent with the anchoring catch we already publish rather than replacing it.

Two failures, and the serious one is the coating. Owners report it degrading into the water: 'after only a few weeks over my pool, it essentially melted into the water and left tar-like goo over the sides as well as everything that was in the water', and separately 'Cover Leaves Sticky Black Stains on Pool Sides!'. The second theme is that it tears — one owner returned the prior year's for a tear, 'this one ended up torn also', and another had 'a seam ripped over the winter and it can't be used again'. Add the fit complaint we already flag ('It's TIGHT TIGHT — your fingers will hurt') and one owner's flat verdict that it is 'definitely not a winterizing cover at all — best for keeping leaves out'. The listing also oversells: its photos show a man lying on the cover, and an owner notes 'there is no way this cover could support a grown man's weight'.

Read the star rating on this page as what it is

Every size above reports the same score as its round parent — 4.4★/1,253 for the UIRWAY, 4.2★/1,540 for the QH.HOME — because Amazon pools one listing’s reviews across every size and shape it sells. We flag it on each card as a pooled basis rather than printing it as though it described your size. It is real evidence about the cover and no evidence at all about the rectangular cut.

And there is a sharper version of that problem. We read the critical tail on the QH.HOME 550D below and found all ten critical reviews came from round-pool owners. Depth is not the same as relevance.

The shared failure nobody’s listing mentions

Reading the critical tails of both fabric covers on 31 August 2026 turned up one theme they have in common, and it ends up in your water. Owners of both describe the coating breaking down: the QH.HOME’s top critical review is a one-star titled “Melts/sticks to itself/black marks on pool”, posted with video, and a UIRWAY owner writes that “after only a few weeks over my pool, it essentially melted into the water and left tar-like goo over the sides as well as everything that was in the water.” A second UIRWAY owner reports sticky black stains on the pool sides. Seams are the other shared theme — QH.HOME’s sealing tape “wore out and started to come loose” after two months, another leaked at the seams at 33 days, and UIRWAY owners report tears and a seam that “ripped over the winter.”

That does not make either a bad buy at the price. They hold on in wind better than anything else, which is what they are for. But plan on a two-or-three-season cover, check the underside each spring, and get it off the water if you see residue.

Three rectangle-only covers the round field never surfaces

QH.HOME 550D — the heaviest cloth, on a base that is not about your pool. A genuine step up in fabric from the 500D, and 771 global ratings looked like the deepest evidence here. Then the critical tail: all ten critical reviews come from round-pool owners — 10, 12, 15, 16, 18 and 22 ft — and not one from a rectangular buyer. Depth real, relevance unproven. What those owners report is about the cover rather than the cut, and worth knowing: water sits on top until the cover is trapped, and the winch, cord and Velcro fail well before the cloth does.

Safana — less evidence, but the right evidence. Eighteen cuts, including 8’6”×5’7” and 14’9”×7’3” that nobody else makes, and cut generously. Its 4.5★ is the highest on this page and it is not getting a belt: that rests on 168 ratings with roughly a quarter of the visible reviews being Vine (3 of 13 are “Vine Customer Review of Free Product”). The flip side is the interesting part — only three critical reviews exist, and two of the three are from rectangular buyers. Less evidence than the QH.HOME, and more of it actually about a rectangle. The repeated complaint is Velcro straps not holding.

SIHAIAN — bought for size, not score. At 16×32 the field thins sharply. Lowest-rated here at 4.0★ and dearest at about $150, but that 4.0 is clean — zero Vine, 13 of 13 Verified Purchase — so it is a real paid-owner score. Its tail is blunt: does not last past a year, keeps debris out but is not weather strength, heavy enough to need two people, and the drain ships without a hose. One tell: this listing’s own size labels are garbled — it sells variants named “402’ × 216’” and “258’ × 138’”, which are not pool sizes in feet. Read the bullets for dimensions, never the variant name.

Your pick if you want the heaviest fabric on this page for a rectangular pool, and you'd rather buy the newer 550D than the 500D that has more reviews.

4.3 · 771 owner ratingsAmazon · August 2026 · listing-wide base · global base
Pros
  • The heaviest fabric of any cover on this page — 550D against the 500D of both ratchet covers we rank
  • A clean base for a newer line: 771 global ratings with zero Vine in the visible cards and 13 of 13 Verified Purchase
  • Lay-flat seamless edges, so there is no stitched seam at the rim to split — the failure the 500D's own owners describe
Cons
  • Its 771 ratings are half the 500D's 1,540, so the older cover still has the deeper evidence even though this one has better cloth
  • No published tear strength for the 550D line, so the fabric step-up is a denier number rather than a tested one — it is not directly comparable to the 500D's stated figures
  • Solid fabric, so water pools on top and you still need a cover pump; it is not a safety cover
What owners complain aboutCapability limit

The cloth is not what fails. Owners report water sitting on top until the cover is trapped — 'the entire top fills with water and then you can't remove the cover' — and one bought it specifically because the listing claimed water would not pass through the top, and it did. The rest lands on the tie-down rather than the fabric: the winch 'doesn't tighten enough', the wind-up is 'not very stable', and 'the material is all fine and dandy but the cord you tighten' is not. Velcro and reinforcement go before the 550D does, one owner inside two months.

Safana 420D Rectangle Winter Pool Cover (9×18 ft)

Widest size range, most generous cut

Your pick if you want a rectangular cover cut generously rather than tight, and you are buying one of the odd sizes nobody else makes.

4.5 · 168 owner ratingsAmazon · August 2026 · listing-wide base · global base
Pros
  • The widest size range on this page by far — 18 cuts, including odd sizes (8'6"×5'7", 13'×7', 14'9"×7'3") that the other covers simply do not make
  • Cut generously, not tight: the 9×18 cover measures 11.7×20.7 ft, so the overhang is real — the exact opposite of the UIRWAY's dominant complaint
  • Cheapest rectangular cover here at 9×18, and the edge rings take sandbags without needing ground stakes
Cons
  • THE BASE IS THIN AND PADDED: 168 global ratings is a ninth of the QH.HOME 500D's, and 3 of the 13 visible reviews are 'Vine Customer Review of Free Product' — roughly a quarter — so the 4.5★ headline sits above what paying owners alone would give it
  • 420D is the lightest fabric of the rectangular covers here, against 500D and 550D on the others
  • Solid fabric, so water pools on top and you still need a cover pump; it is not a safety cover
What owners complain aboutTheme

The Velcro straps not holding is the only complaint specific enough to act on, from a 14x8 rectangular owner. Beyond that it is fiddly to fit and a genuine two-person job, with the elastic cords called out as the awkward part. Honestly stated: there is not enough tail here to characterise a failure mode — one of the three critical reviews is a bare one-star 'bad' with no detail.

Only 3 critical reviews exist across 168 global ratings (1.8%) — but 2 of the 3 are from RECTANGULAR buyers (14'x8', 7'x10'), which is more shape-relevant than the QH.HOME's deeper all-round tail · critical reviews read August 2026

Pros

  • Side storage pockets take weights along the edge rather than relying on ground stakes
Cons
  • THE LOWEST RATING ON THIS PAGE at 4.0★, and the most expensive cover here at about $150 — that combination needs a reason, and the reason is size availability rather than quality
  • No published denier or tear strength, so the fabric cannot be compared with the 420D/500D/550D covers above it
  • Solid fabric, so water pools on top and you still need a cover pump; it is not a safety cover
What owners complain aboutLifespan

Durability, plainly: 'Horrible material does not last past 1 year', and from a 3-star owner, 'Pay for a cheap pool cover, and you'll receive a cheap pool cover.' The second theme is scope — it keeps debris out but is not a weather cover ('nice to keep debris out of pool but not weather strength', 'nice material, thin, but NOT' heavy duty). Practical annoyances on top: heavy enough to need two people, and the drain ships without a hose.

Cover clips are not an upgrade you can add here

Worth saying plainly, because the round roundup ranks them and this page cannot. Winter cover clips do not fit your pool. They clamp onto a narrow metal top rail, which is a steel-wall above-ground pool — the scrim aisle. Every cover on this page is a fabric cover cut for a rectangular metal-frame or soft-sided pool, and both clip products we rank exclude exactly that: Beeplove’s listing rules out soft-sided, inflatable and steel-frame pools outright, and four separate Gladon owners bought a set for one and could not fit it, with one measuring the boundary at rails under about three-quarters of an inch — “the bigger Intex edges are too wide at the top.”

Your tie-down is the one built into the cover. On the QH.HOME that is the ratchet rope you crank tight segment by segment; on the UIRWAY it is the leg straps that grab the pool’s own legs. Weight the edges as well, which the QH.HOME listing never tells you to do, and that is the whole system. There is no clip to add on top of it.

If your pool is round or oval

Then you have a bigger and better field than this one, including the scrim winter covers that actually carry snow load — and a different winner. Round pools: The Best Above-Ground Pool Covers of 2026, which ranks the scrim aisle and the round cuts of these same fabric covers side by side. Oval pools: The Best Oval Above-Ground Pool Covers of 2026, sized 12×24 to 18×33, with the measuring ruling and the 18×33-versus-18×34 trap.

FAQ

What kind of cover fits a rectangular above-ground pool?

A ratchet-strap or drawstring fabric cover, cut to your pool's two dimensions. Scrim winter covers — Robelle, Yankee, Blue Wave — are not made in a rectangle at any size, so none of them will ever fit you no matter what number you order. The two covers we rank for round pools, the UIRWAY 500D and the QH.HOME, both sell rectangular cuts inside the same listing, and there are three rectangle-only brands besides.

What size cover do I need for a 9x18 rectangular pool?

A cover sold as 9x18 — the maker sizes it for the pool, not for the finished cover, and adds the overhang itself. Safana's 9x18 cover measures 11.7 x 20.7 ft, for example. Do NOT order an 18-foot round cover; a round cover cannot reach the corners of a rectangle. And check shape as well as numbers: some listings sell an 18'x9' OVAL and a 9'x18' RECTANGULAR as different options at different prices.

Is a rectangular pool cover the same as a winter cover?

Not always, and the listings blur it. Several of these are honestly debris-and-sun covers that hold on well in wind rather than snow-load winter covers. One UIRWAY owner puts it plainly: 'definitely not a winterizing cover at all — best for keeping leaves out.' If you get real snow on a steel-wall pool, the scrim aisle is the one you want, and it is round-only.

Why do these covers all show the same star rating?

Because Amazon pools one listing's reviews across every size AND shape it sells. The UIRWAY rectangular cuts all report 4.4/1,253 — the same figure as its 18 ft round parent — and the QH.HOME cuts all report 4.2/1,540. We flag that on every card as a pooled basis. It is real evidence about the cover and no evidence at all about your size.
