How Fountains, Bubblers & Spillovers Change Your Water

Short answer

Any water feature — fountain, bubbler, deck jet, spa spillover, sheer descent — aerates the water. Aeration drives off CO₂, which raises pH without changing total alkalinity (so run features and your pH climbs, meaning more acid). It also speeds chlorine loss a little (more surface + sun) and cools the water by evaporation — a real Florida trick: run them overnight to drop a few degrees. Run features when you want those effects.

Fountains, bubblers, deck jets, sheer descents, scuppers, a spa spillover — they look different, but to your water they all do one thing: aerate it. They pull air into the water and throw water into the air. That quietly changes three things: your pH, your chlorine use, and your water temperature. None of it is a problem — but once you know what’s happening, you can run your features on purpose instead of wondering why your pH won’t sit still.

Water features push your pH up

This is the big one. When you aerate water, you drive carbon dioxide out of it. Less dissolved CO₂ means less carbonic acid in the water, and pH rises.

The quirk that trips people up: aeration raises pH without changing your total alkalinity. It’s actually the only way to raise pH that leaves TA alone — which is why experienced owners run a bubbler on purpose to bring pH back up after adding acid (acid lowers both pH and TA; aeration then nudges pH back without re-adding TA). Practical version: if you run water features a lot, your pH will climb faster and you’ll add muriatic acid more often. Nothing’s wrong — that’s just the feature doing its thing. Keep pH in the 7.6–7.8 range and don’t chase it; a slow climb from a fountain is normal.

They burn a little more chlorine

More surface area and more airborne droplets mean more of your water meets air and sunlight at once — and both off-gassing and sun burn free chlorine faster. It’s usually modest, but a pool run with heavy features (especially in direct sun with low stabilizer) trends a bit lower on FC. The fix is the same as always: keep free chlorine at your CYA’s target — see the FC/CYA chart — and check it a touch more often when the features run all day.

And they cool the water — on purpose in summer

Here’s the upside Floridians love. Evaporation is the main way a pool sheds heat, and aeration speeds evaporation up. Run a fountain or bubbler overnight and the pool can be a few degrees cooler by morning — the cheapest pool “chiller” there is.

Two honest caveats:

  • Humidity caps it. Evaporative cooling depends on dry, moving air. On muggy Florida afternoons — or under a screen enclosure, where there’s less air movement across the surface — the effect shrinks. It works best on clear, breezy nights.
  • It’s evaporation, so you top off more. Water you evaporate has to be replaced, and as it leaves it slowly concentrates what stays behind (calcium, CYA, salt). Minor over a season, but real.

Salt pools: your features and your cell both push pH up

Use it on purpose

The whole point: water features aren’t just decoration, they’re a lever you control.

  • Want to raise pH after adding acid? Run a bubbler for a day.
  • Pool too warm? Run the features overnight — breezy, low-humidity nights work best.
  • Fighting to hold chlorine in a heat wave, or pH climbing too fast? Ease off the features for a few days.

Run them when you want what they do, and none of it will catch you off guard.
