What a salt system actually does (and doesn’t)
The generator passes your pool water over an electrified cell that splits dissolved salt into chlorine, on a schedule you set. That’s it. It does not balance pH, manage CYA, or fix alkalinity — and it introduces two quirks of its own.
What you still test
- Free chlorine + pH — same routine as any pool, about twice a week. If FC runs low, turn the cell’s output up; if it runs high, down.

- Salt level — the one extra number. Keep it in the range your cell wants (usually stamped on the unit); too low and it stops making chlorine, too high and you’re draining. - Alkalinity + calcium hardness — monthly, same as any pool.

The two numbers salt quietly pushes out of range
pH drifts up. The electrolysis that makes chlorine also nudges pH higher over time, so salt pools usually need periodic acid to hold 7.6–7.8. Don’t be surprised to add acid regularly.
CYA creep still matters. Salt pools run higher CYA on purpose, but “higher” isn’t “unlimited” — if it climbs past ~90 your required chlorine climbs with it and the cell can’t keep up. Test it; don’t assume.
Bottom line
A salt system removes the chore of hauling chlorine — a real quality-of-life win — but it doesn’t remove testing.
