Short answer

A clean pool needs five numbers in range and enough free chlorine for your stabilizer level. That's it. Almost every green pool, cloudy pool, and 'mystery' problem traces back to one of those, not to a missing specialty bottle. More chemicals usually means more problems.

The five numbers that run everything

Your whole pool comes down to five measurements. Get these in range and keep enough chlorine, and problems mostly stop happening.

  • Free Chlorine (FC) — the sanitizer actually doing the work.
  • Cyanuric Acid (CYA) — stabilizer; sunscreen for your chlorine. It decides how much FC you need.
  • pH — how acidic the water is (comfort + keeps everything working).
  • Total Alkalinity (TA) — a buffer that keeps pH from swinging.
  • Calcium Hardness (CH) — protects plaster and equipment from soft or scaling water.

The one relationship that trips up almost everyone is chlorine and CYA: the more stabilizer in your water, the more free chlorine you need to keep it effective. A pool with “3 ppm chlorine” and high CYA can still go green, because that chlorine is mostly locked up. That single fact explains most “my levels look fine but it’s green” mysteries.

Why more chemicals means more problems

Every bottle you add is a number you now have to manage — and they fight each other:

The over-dosing trap: too much stabilizer makes your chlorine useless (hello, algae). Chasing pH with acid crashes your alkalinity. Cal-hypo “shock” drives calcium up until you get scale. Algaecides foam and stain. Each fix creates the next problem — and a reason to buy the next bottle.

What you actually need

The short shopping list: plain liquid chlorine (or a salt system), muriatic acid to lower pH when needed, and a good drop-based test kit (FAS-DPD for chlorine). Keep stabilizer, baking soda, and calcium chloride on hand to correct those specific numbers — used only when a test says so, not weekly.

That’s the whole kit for most pools. Everything else is situational or unnecessary.

The simple weekly routine

  1. Test free chlorine and pH a few times a week (a good kit, not strips).
  2. Add liquid chlorine to keep FC in the target range for your CYA — use the calculator so you don’t overshoot.
  3. Lower pH with a little muriatic acid if it drifts above ~7.8. Don’t chase small swings.
  4. Run the pump enough to turn the water over and keep the filter working.
  5. Brush now and then, especially shaded spots.
