CYA Too High? Why Your Chlorine Quit (and How to Actually Lower It)
You're seeing: Your chlorine 'reads fine' but does nothing — or the pool store told you the pool has 'chlorine lock.'
There's no such thing as chlorine lock. What the pool store calls it is almost always over-stabilization: your CYA (stabilizer) has climbed too high, so it binds up so much chlorine that a 'normal' free-chlorine reading can't sanitize — and shocking harder won't break it. CYA only leaves the water by dilution: partially drain and refill (replacing about half the water cuts CYA roughly in half) or use a reverse-osmosis service. 'CYA reducer' products are unreliable — skip them. It got high from trichlor/dichlor tablets (about 57% stabilizer), so prevent a repeat by switching to plain liquid chlorine or a salt system.

”Chlorine lock” is a myth — it’s over-stabilization
“Chlorine lock” is an old industry term for “something we can’t easily explain after selling you every other potion first.” Trouble Free Pool is blunt about it: it’s a myth, and about 99% of the time what a store calls chlorine lock is just over-stabilized water — your CYA (cyanuric acid, “stabilizer”) is too high.
Here’s the real mechanism. CYA is sunscreen for chlorine, but it works by binding most of your free chlorine into a protected reserve, leaving only a small active fraction. The more CYA you have, the higher your free chlorine has to be to keep the same killing power. Let CYA climb and your “normal” 3–5 ppm quietly falls below what the pool needs — so it can’t sanitize, and algae gets an opening. No amount of “shock” breaks a lock that doesn’t exist. If CYA is the problem, the answer is less CYA — not more chemicals.

- Around 80+ — it gets hard to hold enough free chlorine to sanitize.
- Over 100 ppm — it’s a genuine problem: the free chlorine you’d need to stay ahead of algae climbs to levels most owners won’t maintain.

Almost always stabilized chlorine: trichlor tablets and dichlor granules are about 57% cyanuric acid by weight, so every dose adds CYA along with the chlorine. CYA doesn’t evaporate or break down — it only accumulates. Tablets left on autopilot slowly push CYA up until your normal chlorine stops working.
Do this — the only fixes that work
- Get an accurate CYA with a real drop-based kit (pool-store CYA readings are inconsistent store to store — see why strips and store tests lie).
- Partially drain and refill. This is the primary fix. The drop is roughly proportional: replacing about half the water cuts CYA roughly in half. Recheck and repeat if it’s still high. (In a high water table, lower the level in stages or use RO — don’t float the pool.)
- No-drain option: reverse osmosis (RO). A mobile RO service filters CYA (and hardness) out of your existing water without a full drain — worth it under water restrictions or on a well.

Don’t buy a “CYA reducer” or enzyme product — they’re unreliable and Trouble Free Pool doesn’t count on them. Don’t “shock harder” to break a lock that isn’t there; you’ll burn money chasing a number. And don’t keep feeding trichlor/dichlor tablets — that’s the exact thing that got you here.
Prevent the next round
The permanent fix is to stop adding CYA you don’t need.
