The Salt Cell Cost Index

A salt chlorinator's cell is a consumable — it wears out every 3–7 years, and the replacement can cost more than the system did. Cost guides shrug with ranges ("$300–$1,800, lasts 3–7 years"); nobody shows the per-model math. This is the actual table — for whole systems and the aftermarket-vs-OEM replacement cells — so you can compare on cell cost per year, not sticker price. Genuine cells run ~$70/yr to ~$300/yr; the aftermarket cells cost less up front but don't publish a rated life, so their true cost-per-year is unknowable — which is itself the buyer-beware.

How to read this table

Cell cost per year is the number that decides it. Divide the replacement cell's price by its rated life: the CircuPool cells run 15,000 rated hours (~7 years) at $494–$699, so ~$70–$100 a year; the dealer-brand cells run ~10,000 hours (~5 years) at $699–$1,500, so ~$140–$300 a year. Over a decade that spread is bigger than the price difference between the systems themselves. Oversize the cell to ~2× your pool volume and it lasts longer still.

Aftermarket cells: cheaper sticker, unknowable cost-per-year. A dead cell sends you shopping, and aftermarket replacements undercut the genuine article — the EverCrystal drops into a Pentair IC40 for about $940 (vs ~$1,500 OEM), and the Maureen fits a Hayward T-15 for about $450 (vs ~$1,099 genuine). But neither publishes a rated cell life, so you can't run the cost-per-year math on them — which is exactly the gamble. On Pentair the aftermarket usually wins (the OEM is pricey and the aftermarket is proven); on Hayward the genuine TurboCell is worth the premium (2× the chlorine per Hayward, NSF-certified, and a far larger proven base).

The DIY-install penalty is the trap nobody prices in. Pentair and Hayward can void the warranty on online-bought or self-installed units — the low online price isn't real if a failed cell has no coverage. Aftermarket cells carry their own warranty and no such penalty. CircuPool sells direct with no self-install penalty, part of why it wins our salt chlorinator showdown. Pentair buyers should also check the manufacture date: units made before Oct 20, 2025 carry a firmware bug (bulletin A00709) — buy through a dealer who can verify the date.
