Green Hair and Straw Hair After Swimming: It Isn't the Chlorine
You're seeing: Hair turning green after swimming, or going dry, dull and straw-like through the season.
TWO DIFFERENT INJURIES GET TREATED AS ONE. THE GREEN IS COPPER. Chlorine does not turn hair green — dissolved copper does, it binds to the protein in the hair shaft, and blonde or light hair shows it first because there is nothing to hide it. The copper comes from copper-based algaecides, from ionizers, from a corroding copper heat exchanger in a heater running aggressive water, or from your fill water. THAT MATTERS FOR THE FIX: metal ions need a CHELATING shampoo, one that binds the metal and carries it out. BUT DO NOT SHOP BY READING FOR 'EDTA' — we corrected that advice after reading the labels. Disodium EDTA sits around position 10 at roughly 0.1% in nearly every shampoo as a formula stabiliser, including ones sold for completely different problems, so its presence separates nothing; a hard-water shampoo and a swimmers' shampoo we screened carry an identical chelant profile. Worse, most chelants bind calcium as readily as copper and are spent on hardness before they reach your hair. The published work on copper points at HISTIDINE and EDDS instead, because histidine binds copper strongly and calcium weakly. A CLARIFYING shampoo removes surface buildup and is a different product doing a different job, and the two terms are used interchangeably in most of what is written about this. A 'chlorine-removing swimmer's shampoo' is aimed at the wrong molecule entirely for the green. THE STRAW IS CHLORINE, and it is real: chlorinated water strips the natural sebum that coats the shaft and lifts the cuticle, so hair goes dry, dull, tangly and porous over a season. That one is prevented rather than treated. THE PREVENTION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS IS FREE: soak your hair in tap water before you get in. Hair absorbs water like a sponge, and a shaft already saturated with clean water takes up far less pool water. Add a leave-in conditioner as a barrier and a silicone cap over it if you swim often, and rinse immediately when you get out rather than at bedtime. AND TREAT THE GREEN AS A POOL DIAGNOSTIC, NOT A HAIR PROBLEM: if hair is greening, you have copper in the water, and copper does not leave on its own. It stains plaster blue-green permanently and it is still there next season. ON THE CHLORINE HALF THERE IS A REAL MECHANISM, AND IT IS NOT A CHELANT: the active in swim shampoos is SODIUM THIOSULFATE, the same chemistry used to dechlorinate water. Because an ingredient list is ordered by concentration, WHERE it sits is a comparison you can make yourself — UltraSwim lists it 8th of 21 ingredients, TRISWIM 20th of 33. So the straw half has a product worth naming and the green half still does not.
The green is copper. It is not chlorine. That single correction changes what you buy, because the product most people reach for is aimed at the wrong molecule.
There are two separate injuries here and almost everything written about swimmers’ hair treats them as one:

Chelating is not clarifying
This is the distinction the category gets wrong, and the two words are used interchangeably in most articles on the subject.
- Chelating shampoo contains a chelating agent that binds metal ions and carries them out of the hair. That is the chemistry the green actually needs.
- Clarifying shampoo removes surface buildup — product residue, oils, film. A genuinely useful product doing a completely different job. It can leave copper-bound hair cleaner and still green.
- “Chlorine-removing swimmer’s shampoo” is aimed at chlorine, which is not what is green.
”Look for EDTA” is not a filter, and we said it was
This guide originally told you to read the ingredient list for EDTA. We went and read some, and that advice does not survive contact with the labels.
Disodium EDTA is in nearly everything, at about 0.1%, as a formula stabiliser — it is there to neutralise trace metal in the bottle, not the metal in your hair. Two examples, both read this week:

Different brands, different marketing, effectively the same chelant profile at stabiliser level. A rule that passes both of those equally passes an ordinary shampoo. It cannot separate anything.
And there is a mechanism behind why it fails. Most chelants bind calcium and magnesium as readily as copper — so in hard water they are spent on the hardness before they ever reach the metal in your hair. The published work on copper specifically points at histidine and EDDS rather than EDTA, because histidine has a high binding affinity for copper and a low one for calcium: it goes after the thing you are trying to remove instead of being consumed on the way. Effective levels are around 0.025–0.25%.
So the corrected rule: the useful signal is a product formulated and dosed to remove metal, ideally naming histidine or EDDS. The presence of the word EDTA on an ingredient list tells you almost nothing.
Treat any of them as a reset, not a routine: chelating shampoos strip by design, so use one when there is metal to remove and condition normally the rest of the time.
The prevention that works is free
Soak your hair in tap water before you get in. Hair absorbs water like a sponge, and a shaft already saturated with clean water has far less capacity to take up pool water carrying chlorine and copper. Two minutes under a shower or hose beats most products sold for the purpose.
Then, if you swim often:
- A leave-in conditioner over the saturated shaft, as a physical barrier.
- A silicone cap over that — silicone rather than latex, which grips and pulls. A cap is never watertight and is not meant to be; it reduces exposure rather than eliminating it, so use it with the pre-soak, not instead of it.
- Rinse the moment you get out, not at bedtime. The longer pool water sits in hair, the more copper binds and the more sebum is stripped.
Skip the kitchen remedies
Lemon juice, tomato juice and ketchup are working on the wrong principle. The tomato-based ones are colour theory — red opposite green on the wheel — which is masking, not removal, and it returns when it washes out. Repeatedly dosing already-porous, chlorine-stripped hair with uncontrolled kitchen acids is not neutral for the cuticle either.
The part that is actually about your pool
If hair is greening, that is a water diagnostic. You have copper in the pool, and copper does not break down or leave on its own — the same copper is staining your plaster a permanent blue-green, and it will still be there next season.
Work the sources in order of likelihood:
- Copper-based algaecides. Check what you have been dosing. Copper is the active ingredient in many of them.
- A mineral or ionizer system, which releases copper on purpose — see the mineral-pool myth for why we argue against them.
- A heater with a copper heat exchanger on aggressive water. If your saturation index sits negative, the water is dissolving the exchanger — that costs you the heater as well as the hair.
- The fill water, worth testing if you are on a well.

We came here to name one product and ended up naming half of one, because the two injuries do not have the same answer available on a shelf.
For the chlorine — the straw — there is a real mechanism
Screening ingredient lists across three swim shampoos turned up something the marketing does not lead with: the active in this category is sodium thiosulfate, which is a genuine chlorine neutraliser — it is the chemistry used to dechlorinate water. And because an ingredient list is ordered by concentration, where it sits is a comparison you can make yourself:

Use it at the rinse straight after swimming, which is the step this guide already tells you to take. It makes that rinse do more than water alone.
For the green — the copper — there is still nothing we will crown
The rule this page used to publish was “read the label for EDTA.” We screened labels, and it does not work: no product we found carries a copper-selective chelant. Malibu C Swimmers Wellness and Ion Hard Water Shampoo, sold for different problems, carry effectively the same chelant profile — disodium EDTA at stabiliser level, sodium gluconate, citric acid. A rule that passes both passes anything.
So we name no green remover, and we are explicit about why rather than crowning the most famous bottle. What would unlock a pick is a label screen for histidine or EDDS at a stated level.
The product’s own reviews make the same split. A buyer who tried the shampoo above on her daughter’s green tint titled her review “Good for removing chlorine but NOT GREEN from blonde hair” — it did nothing to prevent or remove it. She is right, and she is describing the difference between copper and chlorine from the buyer’s side.
The durable part is still above: the green is copper, chelating is not clarifying, EDTA on a label is not a signal, the prevention is free, and silicone beats latex.
If your water is stinging eyes and smelling strongly of chlorine as well, that is a different mechanism again and it means too little free chlorine, not too much: chlorine smell and burning eyes.

Acidic kitchen remedies are working on a different principle and at a strength nobody controls, and the tomato-based ones are mostly relying on the colour theory that red sits opposite green on the wheel — which is cosmetic masking, not removal, and the green returns as soon as it washes out. There is also a real cost to the acidic approaches: repeatedly dosing already-porous, chlorine-stripped hair with kitchen acids is not neutral treatment for the cuticle. Use the product designed for the chemistry. And more importantly, treat the recurrence as the signal it is: if you are removing green more than once, the pool is still putting copper in the water, and no shampoo addresses that.
