Semi-Inground Pools: What You Can Actually Bury, and What Changes When You Do

Short answer

A semi-inground pool is a rigid-wall above-ground pool recessed into the ground, and it exists because it splits the difference on cost and suits a sloped yard that would make full excavation expensive. The level tolerance quartering is the number to take seriously. An above-ground pool that settles can be drained and re-set at real but survivable cost. A buried one has backfill, drainage and possibly a concrete collar bearing against the wall, so there is no “later.”

Drainage is the failure mode

Above-ground pools fail from unlevel ground. Buried pools fail from water pressure on the outside of the wall — the mirror image of the hydrostatic problem an inground pool has.

Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure can buckle a panel or lift the liner off the wall. The standard build:

  • A perimeter French drain — 4-inch perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric, sloped about ⅛ inch per foot toward daylight or a sump basin, surrounded by ¾-inch clean gravel.
  • Free-draining backfill. Native clay is the classic mistake: it holds moisture and is prone to freezing, so it builds exactly the pressure the drain exists to relieve.
  • Compacted crushed stone dust as the base, with ½ inch of foam padding over it for insulation and liner protection — and do not over-compact, because excess compaction creates ridges that telegraph through the liner.

If a builder is vague about the drainage plan, press there. It is the one part of the job you can never inspect again.

Resin or steel? Here the usual advice flips

For a normal above-ground pool on saltwater, resin is the standard recommendation — it’s rust-proof. For burial, that advice reverses.

Royal Swimming Pools states that “in most cases, you should not fully bury an all-resin pool”: resin “can become brittle in extreme cold or warp in intense heat,” and “burying a resin pool adds constant soil pressure and moisture exposure, increasing the risk of cracking and structural failure.” For buried installs they call steel wall pools “usually the stronger and safer option when properly protected with slurry backfill and adequate drainage.”

Flag: this is contested. Other retailers argue resin handles burial better than steel. We are naming the disagreement rather than picking a winner, because the thing at stake is a wall you cannot inspect once it’s backfilled.

And if you want saltwater AND semi-inground, you are asking for two opposite materials at once. That’s not impossible — many pools are hybrids, resin frames and top rails over a resin-coated steel wall, built to get some of each — but it means asking by construction, and getting both answers from the manufacturer of your model in writing.

The code question almost nobody raises with above-ground buyers

Here is the part that surprises people, and it is not really about burying at all.

Under the National Electrical Code, the line between a “storable pool” and a “permanently installed pool” is a maximum water depth of 42 inches. A pool capable of holding water deeper than 42 inches is a permanently installed pool, subject to Part II of Article 680 — which is where equipotential bonding lives.

Now do the arithmetic from the wall-height-versus-water-depth problem: a 52-inch wall holds somewhere between 44 and 48 inches of water. Every number in that range is over 42.

So a typical rigid-wall above-ground pool is already a permanently installed pool for code purposes before anyone picks up a shovel. Burying it strengthens the case rather than creating it — any buried steel structure must be bonded to code.

Semi-inground buys the look of an inground pool. It does not buy the pool.

You still have a flat floor and a vinyl liner hung inside a wall, which means none of the poured features exist: no sun shelf, no bench, no bump-out, no built-in bar stools.
