Fire Features for Pools: Fire Bowls, Fire-and-Water Bowls & Fire Pits
There are four purchases here and they are not variations of each other. A FIRE BOWL sits on the bond beam or a pedestal and is plumbed gas — permanent. A FIRE-AND-WATER BOWL adds a spillway, so it needs plumbing AND electric, and it is the one that genuinely belongs to both this page and the water-feature page. A POURED FIRE PIT is deck work. A FIRE PIT TABLE is furniture you can buy today and move next year, and it is the only one of the four that is a product rather than a project. The cost trap is the same one water features have: the fixture is the small half. A gas bowl runs roughly $1,000 to $3,000, and what you are actually paying for is the gas line, the electrical if it has an igniter or a pump, and the mason work to give it something to stand on. On heat, the number to ask for is BTU per hour, and the honest split is that a decorative flame is far below what warms people — builders working to a fire you SIT around want roughly 150,000 to 240,000 BTU/hr. Four different things get sold as “a pool fire feature,” and the only thing they have in common is flame. One of them is furniture you can buy this afternoon. Two of them are decided before your pool gets its finish and are permanent afterwards. Knowing which one you are actually shopping for is most of the decision, because the prices overlap and the commitments do not.
The four, and what each one really is

The line that matters runs between row four and everything above it. The table is a product: it ships, it moves, it goes with you. The other three are projects, and two of them belong on the plan before the shell is finished.
The fixture is the small half of the price
This is the same trap our water-feature page documents, and it catches people the same way. A gas fire bowl runs roughly $1,000 to $3,000 depending on size, material and fuel — a 31-inch hammered-copper bowl configured for natural gas and match-lit sits at about $2,700, for one real example.
That is the part with a price tag on a website. What you are actually buying:
- A gas line out to the bowl, trenched, sized and pressure-tested.
- Electrical, if it has electronic ignition or a pump — conduit, a 24V transformer, and a relay if it is to answer your pool automation.
- Something to stand on. A bond-beam extension, a pedestal, or a raised wall, done in the same finish as the rest of the pool so it does not read as an afterthought.
Ask for the installed number, itemised, and ask it before you fall in love with a bowl. A quote that prices the fixture and waves at “plus gas and electric” is not a quote.
BTU: the number that separates a flame you look at from one you sit around
Fire features get sold on appearance and bought on appearance, and then people are surprised the thing does not warm them. The number to ask for is BTU per hour, and the honest split is large.
Builders sizing a fire you intend to sit around work to roughly 150,000 to 240,000 BTU/hr, with about 180,000 as a practical floor — and that is as much a question of gas supply and pressure as of the burner itself, which is why an undersized line quietly caps a big bowl.
A small decorative bowl on the bond beam is not a small version of that. It is a light source with a flame in it. It will look wonderful in photographs at dusk and it will not warm a circle of chairs. Both are legitimate purchases. They are not competing ones, and comparing their prices is a category error.
Ignition is the quiet cost
Match-lit is the cheapest way in and it needs no electricity at all — a key valve, a match or a lighter, done. The trade is exactly what it sounds like: you go out and light it, in whatever weather.
Electronic ignition wants a 24V transformer, a conduit run out to the bowl, and a relay if you want it to appear as a button in your pool app. That electrical run is the line item most often missing from a fixture-only quote, and it is not small once a trench is involved.
Fire-and-water bowls need power regardless, because something has to move the water.
One piece of safety hardware worth asking about by name: a thermopile heat sensor, which shuts the gas off if the flame blows out. On an open bowl, outdoors, in wind, that is not a luxury.
The fire-and-water bowl belongs to two pages

Florida: the screen cage decides a lot of this before you do
Most of the country can skip this section. If you have a screen enclosure, it is the first question, not the last.
Wood-burning inside a cage is widely advised against, and not on one ground but four: smoke, sparks, heat buildup in a space designed to hold air still, and local fire codes that commonly restrict open flame under a structure. Enclosure companies say this plainly about their own product.
Gas is the safer option under any overhead structure because it does not throw sparks. That is not the same as unrestricted. The clearance you need is measured to the screen mesh and to the aluminum frame — the frame matters because it is what holds the roof up, and heat-sensitive is not the same as flammable. Roughly 80 inches of overhead clearance is the figure commonly cited for a covered patio, which a standard cage may or may not give you over the spot you had in mind.

Ask two people before you buy a fixture: your enclosure company, and your building department. The answer changes by jurisdiction, and it changes what you are allowed to install rather than merely what is wise.
What we’d actually do
If you are not certain, buy the table. It is the only one of the four you can undo, and it is the only one that will tell you honestly whether your family sits outside after dark. A year of using one is better information than any amount of deciding.
If you are building the pool now and you want the look, a match-lit gas bowl on a bond-beam extension is the cheapest permanent version and the one least likely to break: no transformer, no relay, nothing to fail but a valve. Add the gas stub for a second bowl while the trench is open even if you only fit one, because the trench is the expensive part and it is never cheaper again.
If you want warmth rather than a photograph, size it properly at 150,000 BTU/hr or more, put it where chairs actually go rather than where it looks best from the house, and confirm your gas supply can feed it before you choose the bowl.
And if you are under a cage, settle the clearance question first. It is the one constraint here that can make the entire plan impossible, and it costs nothing to ask.

Propane if you do not, accepting that you now own a tank that has to live somewhere out of sight and be refilled — and that a large burner empties one faster than people expect.
