How to Recover Your Pool After Wildfire Ash, Smoke, or a Storm

You're seeing: Wildfire ash, heavy smoke, or storm debris just fouled your pool — gray or cloudy water, a chlorine that won't hold, and gunk settling on the bottom.

Short answer

Wildfire ash and storm debris foul a pool the same way: they dump organic material that burns through your free chlorine, cloud and clog the water, and — ash especially — raise pH and dump phosphates. The recovery is one playbook: net out the floating debris fast, run the filter nonstop, get free chlorine back up to your CYA target (run a full SLAM if it crashed or algae started), lower pH if ash pushed it high, and vacuum the settled sludge to waste. Phosphates are the one honest exception to our usual 'skip the remover' rule — a heavy ash or fire-retardant load is when a one-time phosphate remover earns its place. Don't swim until chlorine holds and the water is clear, and never fully drain a pool right after heavy rain — a high water table can float the shell out of the ground.

Whether it’s wildfire ash drifting down for days or a storm dumping leaves, dirt, and runoff into the water, the effect on your pool is the same problem wearing two costumes: a big slug of organic material hits the water, burns through your chlorine, clouds everything up, and — with ash — shifts your chemistry on top of it. The good news is there’s one recovery playbook, and it’s mostly chlorine, filtration, and patience.

What’s actually happening to your water

The shared problem — a chlorine-demand spike. Ash and storm debris are loaded with organics, and chlorine gets consumed oxidizing them. Your free chlorine can crash to zero within hours, and once it does, algae and bacteria have an open door. This is the dangerous part of any sky event, and it’s the same whether the source is fire or a hurricane.

On top of that shared problem, each event adds its own twist:

  • Ash is alkaline and mineral-rich, so it raises pH and total alkalinity and dumps phosphates and nitrates (algae food). It clouds the water gray and clogs the filter with fine particulates.
  • Fire retardant (Phos-Chek) is the extreme case. Aerial long-term retardant is ammonium-phosphate based with iron-oxide coloring — if it drifts into the pool it’s a massive phosphate-and-nitrogen load plus red-orange staining, and a near-guaranteed bloom.
  • Smoke alone, without heavy fallout, has a modest chemical effect — some settling particulate and minor chlorine demand. The bigger issue there is air quality for swimmers.
  • Storms and hurricanes do the opposite to your chemistry: heavy rain dilutes the water, so your CYA, calcium, and salt can all read low afterward — while the wind-blown debris and runoff spike chlorine demand just like ash.

The recovery, step by step

Do these in order. The goal is to stop the chlorine bleed and get the water clear, then fine-tune.

  1. Safety first. Nobody swims until the water is clear and free chlorine holds. After flooding, keep everyone away from any submerged pool equipment until it’s checked — that’s an electrical hazard, not just a chemistry one.
  2. Net out the floating debris and ash immediately — before it dissolves or sinks. Less dissolved material means less chemistry to undo.
  3. Run the filter continuously and clean it often. Ash and fine debris clog a filter fast — backwash or rinse the cartridge repeatedly.
  4. Test everything, then correct what the event actually did. Bring free chlorine back up to the target for your CYA and run a full SLAM if it crashed or algae started. If ash raised your pH, add acid to bring it back to ~7.2–7.8. After a storm, recheck CYA, calcium, and salt — heavy rain dilutes them.
  5. Vacuum the settled sludge to WASTE (bypass the filter), not through it. For a heavy load, a flocculant to drop everything to the bottom, then a slow vacuum-to-waste, clears it fastest.
  6. Phosphates — the one honest exception. We normally tell you to skip the phosphate remover because chlorine kills algae regardless. A big ash or retardant load is the rare time that flips: if free chlorine simply won’t hold afterward, a one-time phosphate remover can help you regain control. Situational, not routine.
  7. Only then consider a partial drain — if the water is badly fouled or over-diluted. Read the drain warning below first.

The drain mistake that can pop your pool

It’s tempting to just empty a fouled pool and start fresh. Don’t fully drain an in-ground pool right after heavy rain or flooding. A high water table pushes up on the empty shell (hydrostatic pressure) and can float it out of the ground and crack it — an expensive, sometimes total loss. Almost every ash- or storm-fouled pool recovers with chlorine, filtration, and a vacuum-to-waste. If a real drain is unavoidable after flooding, leave it to a pro who can manage the groundwater.

The Florida version: storm season

Wildfire ash is a Western reality, but Florida gets the same playbook every hurricane season — a tropical storm dumps rain, leaves, and runoff, spikes chlorine demand, and dilutes your numbers. A screen enclosure helps keep wind-blown debris out, but it does nothing about rainfall dilution or floodwater. Ride out the storm, then work the list above: chlorine first, filter running, rebalance, vacuum to waste.

The honest bottom line

There’s no magic recovery bottle. A pool that got ashed or stormed comes back the same way every other problem does here: hold free chlorine at the target for your CYA, run the filter, balance the water, and clear the debris. The phosphate remover exception is real but narrow — reach for it only when an extreme load won’t let chlorine hold. Everything else is the usual less-is-more routine, just run harder for a few days. When free chlorine holds steady and you can see the bottom, it’s safe to swim again.
