Can You Lower Alkalinity Without Lowering pH? The 'Acid Slug' Myth

Short answer

It's chemically impossible. Muriatic acid (and dry acid) lower BOTH pH and total alkalinity every time you add them — there's no pour technique that separates the two. The 'slug' or 'acid column' method (dumping acid in one concentrated spot with the pump off) does NOT protect your pH. It creates a pocket of extremely low-pH water that can etch plaster and corrode metal, and the pH still drops — then drifts back up on its own as the water aerates. The method that actually works is two steps: add acid to lower both numbers, then AERATE (aim the returns up, run a fountain or spa jets, or bubble in air) to push pH back into range while leaving alkalinity down — because aeration is the only thing that raises pH without raising total alkalinity. There’s a bit of pool-care folklore that refuses to die: to drop your total alkalinity without moving your pH, pour a “slug” of muriatic acid into one spot in the deep end — pump off — and let it sink. You’ll see it fizz on the bottom, “burning off the bicarbonate.” Sounds clever. It’s also chemically impossible, and the pour trick can quietly wreck your plaster.

Acid lowers both — there’s no separating them

Add acid to pool water and two numbers go down together: pH and total alkalinity. That’s not a technique problem you can pour your way around; it’s the chemistry. Total alkalinity is the carbonate buffer, and acid neutralizes carbonate — so lowering one always lowers the other. Muriatic acid, dry acid (sodium bisulfate), it doesn’t matter. Both drop, every time.

The only lever that moves pH by itself is aeration — breaking up the surface so dissolved carbon dioxide outgasses. Aeration raises pH without touching total alkalinity. That’s the one asymmetry in the whole system, and it’s the key to actually solving this.

What the “slug” actually does

Pouring a concentrated column of acid into one spot with the pump off doesn’t spare your pH — the pool’s pH still falls. What it does create is a pocket of extremely low-pH water sitting against your pool floor. On a plaster or gunite surface that means etching and damage; near lights, rails, or fittings it means corrosion. And the “protected” pH? It drifts right back up on its own over the next day or two as the water naturally aerates — which is the exact effect you were told the slug avoided.

So the myth gets it backwards twice: it doesn’t preserve pH (it just delays the rebound you’d get anyway), and the “harmless” concentrated pour is the single riskiest way to add acid.

The method that actually works: acid, then air

You can absolutely end up with lower alkalinity and an in-range pH. You just do it in two moves, not one:

  • 1. Add acid — both numbers drop. Broadcast it slowly across the deep end with the pump running so it mixes in seconds. Your pH and TA both fall.
  • 2. Aerate — pH comes back, TA stays down. Aim the return jets up to ripple the surface, run a fountain, waterfall, or spa jets, or bubble in air. CO₂ outgasses and pH climbs back into range while total alkalinity holds where the acid left it.
  • Retest and repeat. Big drops take a few cycles. It’s patience, not a trick.

That’s the whole secret the slug myth is a shortcut around — and the shortcut doesn’t exist. One honest note: before you chase a “high” TA at all, check whether it’s actually a problem. If your water is balanced and your pH is holding steady, a TA a little above the textbook range may not be worth the acid. You lower alkalinity mainly when it’s pushing your pH up faster than you can keep it down (the mirror of the “Alkalinity Up” = baking soda story, where the problem runs the other way).

The honest bottom line

You can’t pour your way out of chemistry. Acid lowers pH and alkalinity together; aeration is the only thing that raises pH alone. Lower total alkalinity by combining them — acid to bring both down, air to bring pH back — distributed with the pump running, never as a slug on the pool floor. The “acid column” belongs on the pool store’s list of things that aren’t true, right next to the weekly-shock upsell. Manage the five numbers with the real method and you’ll stop chasing your own tail.
