Bugs Around the Pool: What's There, Why, and What Actually Works

Short answer

Nearly everything on this list is at your pool to DRINK — wasps and bees collect water, and in hot dry weather your pool is the most reliable water for a mile. That's why giving them a closer, easier water source away from the deck outperforms almost any spray. Some of these you should leave completely alone: dragonflies eat mosquitoes and are at your pool because reflected light looks like a pond, and bees you never kill — you redirect. Water boatmen and backswimmers in the water itself are not a bug problem at all, they're an ALGAE problem, and they leave when the algae does. Mosquitoes don't breed in a chlorinated pool — they breed in the standing water around it, which is what Bti treats. And the two best-selling categories of 'solution' are useless: a University of Delaware study of bug zappers caught 13,000+ insects of which under 0.25% were mosquitoes and over 99.75% were beneficial insects, while ultrasonic repellers have never worked in any trial. Ants are the exception to all of this: they nest in the loose sand under your pavers, excavate it, and leave voids that make the deck settle — so they are the one pest here that costs you hardscape, the fix is a bait plus a coarse base rather than a spray, and fire ants are a genuine safety problem best handled by the UF/IFAS two-step. And two look worse than they are: 'blind mosquito' midges do not bite and are chasing your lights, and the flea-like specks slicking the surface are springtails, which do not bite either.

Nearly every insect at your pool is there for a reason you can name — and the reason decides the fix. That’s the part the internet skips. Search this topic and you’ll get a wall of advice written by companies that sell mosquito treatments, and the answer is always “spray something.”

Here’s the more useful frame: a pool is a water source before it’s anything else. In hot, dry weather it may be the most reliable open water for a mile. Wasps drink from it. Bees carry it home. Dragonflies mistake the glare for a pond. Once you see the list that way, most of the real fixes stop being products.

The stinging insects: give them water somewhere else

Wasps and yellowjackets are at your pool to drink and to carry water back to the nest for cooling. Bees are doing the same job for the hive. That’s why the standard advice to spray the deck accomplishes so little — you’re not competing with a smell, you’re competing with a water supply, and yours is the best one available.

So compete with it. A shallow dish or a slow-dripping spigot, 30 feet or more from the deck, with stones or corks so insects have somewhere dry to stand, will pull traffic away from the pool. A pool is actually a poor drinking spot from a bee’s point of view — there’s nowhere safe to land — so a better option nearby wins on its own merits. Put it out early in the season if you can; redirecting bees before they’ve settled on your pool is far easier than moving them after.

Then remove the secondary attractants, which is where yellowjackets differ from bees: late in summer they shift hard toward sugar and protein, which is why August and September feel worse. Lidded trash, covered drinks, and rinsing sticky spills off the deck do real work.

Traps work — but placement is the whole trick, and most people get it backwards. A trap lures wasps toward itself. Put one on the patio table and you have invited every wasp in the yard to join you. Traps belong at the far boundary of the property, pulling traffic away from where you sit.

If you’re going to hang one

Most of what sells as a “wasp trap” is a bare plastic jar with holes in it — no attractant in the box, so you’re improvising with soda, beer or cat food and hoping. The traps that come with a real lure are a different product, and there is one more thing to check before you buy: a trap that promises wasps and hornets and yellowjackets tends to underperform a trap that picks one. That isn’t marketing scepticism, it’s the published chemistry — the standard yellowjacket lure draws insects to the area but doesn’t do much to get them into the trap, and it actively interferes with the protein baits that other species respond to. Combining lures costs you catch.

You can watch that play out inside a single brand. RESCUE!‘s multi-species W·H·Y trap sits at 3.6★ across 1,153 owners, and its critical reviews aren’t about cracked plastic or slow shipping — they’re people reporting zero captures (“still hosting the annual Wasp Olympics in my yard with NOT A SINGLE CAPTURE”). The same company’s single-target yellowjacket trap rates 4.2★.

The honest catch, and it’s the one owners hit: yellowjacket lures are species-biased. The classic chemistry works best on western yellowjackets, while the eastern, German and common species — the ones most of the country actually has — respond better to protein. One owner put it exactly right: he caught aerial yellowjackets while “a ton of German yellowjackets” in the same yard ignored the trap. So if it’s been up two weeks and caught nothing, that’s the likely reason, and no amount of moving it will fix it.

And skip the solar “bee traps.” The best-rated hanging traps on Amazon are marketed as wasp and bee catchers, some with an LED to pull in more insects at night. That is the bug-zapper mistake with extra steps — you’re paying to kill pollinators — and it’s a straight no on this site.

Where DIY stops: a ground nest or a nest inside a soffit or wall is not a homeowner job. A mature yellowjacket colony can hold thousands of insects and defends itself aggressively, and disturbing one near a pool — where people are barefoot, wet and cornered — is how someone gets badly hurt. Call a professional.

Ants: the only one on this list that costs you a deck

Every other insect here is an experience problem. You wait out the flying ants, you skim the springtails, you learn to like the dragonflies. Ants are different, because the thing they’re damaging is your hardscape.

A paver deck is a stack of exactly what a ground-nesting ant wants: a warm, dry, protected cavity sitting directly on a bed of loose sand that’s easy to tunnel and easy to carry away. So they move in under the pavers and start excavating. Two things follow. The sand they remove has to go somewhere, so it comes up through the joints — those little volcano piles of fine sand between pavers are the tell, and they’re the same sand that was supporting the stone. And what’s left behind is a void. Pavers over a void settle unevenly, edges lip up, and on a wet pool deck a lipped paver is a stubbed toe at best. The joints then open enough for weeds to establish, which widens them further.

Spraying the deck is the answer that fails. You can kill every ant you can see on the surface and the colony underneath is untouched — you’ve treated the foragers, not the nest. Worse, a broadcast contact spray across the deck and its edges is exactly the pollinator-killing approach this guide argues against everywhere else, and it does nothing about the void that’s already there. Use a bait instead: foragers carry it back and it reaches the colony, which is the only part that matters.

The bait worth using, and why this one. Most ant products in a garden centre are contact killers — they kill what they touch and the nest carries on. A bait has to be attractive enough that foragers pick it up and slow enough that they get home before it acts. The one we’d point you at is a professional bait, and the reason it fits this page is its label: it covers imported fire ants and pavement ants, which are the two ant problems a pool owner actually has, for two completely unrelated reasons — one stings your family, the other eats your deck.

Two rules decide whether this works, and both are counterintuitive.

1. It goes on the LAWN, not the deck. The label states it is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, that it must not be applied to water or where surface water is present, and that runoff may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in adjacent water. A pool is adjacent water. So broadcast it over the turf where the mounds are, keep it off the pavers and away from deck drains, and don’t apply with rain in the forecast — which is also the efficacy rule, since rain within two to three hours can undo the application.

2. Broadcast it; don’t treat mounds with it. Texas A&M’s fire ant program is explicit that “treating individual mounds with Advion will not make it work faster or better,” and a striking share of its worst reviews are people who dosed three mounds and concluded it failed. The correct rate is about half an ounce per 1,000 square feet — so little that owners routinely assume they’ve under-applied. They haven’t.

And be honest about what it isn’t: it has no residual control. It kills the colony and does nothing to stop the next one moving in, which is what nearly every disappointed review is really describing. It’s also not species-selective — any ant that forages it takes it, including the harmless native ones. That’s the trade, and it’s why this belongs where you have a real problem rather than as a routine yard-wide spray-and-forget.

The real fix is a base spec, and it belongs in the build. Hardscape installers who deal with this repeatedly make the same point: ants colonise fine bedding sand because they can move it. Build on an open-graded base — clean crushed stone with no fines, with a chip or HPB bedding layer rather than fine sand — and the aggregate is simply too big for an ant to carry, so the colony has nothing to excavate. Polymeric sand in the joints, which our pool deck guide already recommends near a salt pool, closes the other half by locking the surface. (Treat that as installer practice rather than measured study — it’s contractor experience, consistently reported.)

That guide’s whole argument is that the base, not the surface material, is where a Florida deck fails. This is the same lesson arriving through a different door: a cheap sand base doesn’t just settle on its own, it recruits help.

Fire ants are a safety problem, not a nuisance

Worth separating out, because in Florida they’re the one insect on this page that can actually hurt someone. Fire ants sting rather than bite, and UF/IFAS describes the result as painful burning stings producing pustules and intense itching that can persist for up to ten days — delivered to bare wet feet, on people who are barefoot precisely because they’re at a pool.

UF/IFAS recommends a two-step method and the order matters: broadcast a bait across the lawn first so foraging workers carry the slow-acting toxicant back and it reaches the queens, then one to two weeks later treat any still-active mounds individually. Bait when the air is roughly 65–95°F, the soil is dry, and ants are actively foraging — and not before or right after rain, because bait on wet soil loses its attractiveness and you’ve wasted the application. One clarification, because the two pieces of advice on this page can read as contradictory and aren’t. Step one is the broadcast bait above. Step two — treating whatever mounds are still active a week or two later — means a contact mound product, not more bait on the mound: Texas A&M is specific that mound-treating with a bait like this one won’t make it work faster or better. Broadcast, wait, then spot-treat the survivors with something else.

This is the one place on this page where we’ll tell you to treat an area rather than wait it out, and the reason is that the alternative is a child stepping in a mound.

The two that look like something worse than they are

Midges — “blind mosquitoes.” If you’re being swarmed by clouds of mosquito-looking insects that never actually bite you, those are chironomid midges, and per UF/IFAS this type “does not bite, suck blood, or carry diseases.” They didn’t come from your pool. Their larvae develop in the soft organic bottom of lakes, retention ponds and settling ponds, which in a Florida subdivision is usually the pond two streets over, and they peak April through November. What brings them to your deck is the thing you control: they are “attracted to the lights surrounding houses and businesses at night.”

So the fix is your lighting, not an insecticide — and UF/IFAS is blunt about why spraying is the wrong move: it “is only a short-term fix and can even be counter-productive if it also kills the natural predators of midges such as spiders.” That’s the same argument as the bug zapper one, and midges are in fact the bulk of what a zapper kills. If they’re bad, run less light on the pool deck on peak evenings, shift to warmer colour temperatures, and let the spiders on the cage do their job.

Springtails. Tiny — about 1/16 inch — and they jump when disturbed, which is why people reliably report them as fleas. They aren’t. Per UC IPM they “do not bite humans or pets, nor do they spread disease or damage household furnishings.” They live in damp soil, compost, leaf litter and mulch, and the reason you’re meeting them is that they fall in and drown in numbers large enough to look like an oil slick across the surface.

Skim them off, and then deal with the source, which is moisture: UC IPM’s guidance is that “the key to managing springtails is to reduce moisture and excess organic matter in gardens, plant pots, and around building foundations” — and, notably, that “insecticide sprays are generally not recommended for springtail management.” Thin the mulch bed against the deck, let it dry between waterings, and the supply drops.

The ones to leave completely alone

Dragonflies are on your side. Adults and larvae both eat mosquitoes in quantity. They’re at your pool because polarised light off the surface reads as a pond; they’ll occasionally try to lay eggs in it, and nothing comes of that in chlorinated water. They don’t sting or bite people. A yard with dragonflies is a yard with free mosquito control.

Spiders, mostly. They’re at the cage because that’s where the flying insects are, and the frame is a perfect web anchor. They’re eating the things you’re complaining about. Brush down webs where you walk and leave the rest.

Bugs in the water: that’s an algae problem

If something is swimming in the pool itself, it’s almost certainly a water boatman or a backswimmer — and this is the one item on the list that is genuinely a pool-chemistry issue wearing an insect costume.

Water boatmen eat algae. They move into a pool because there’s algae to eat. Backswimmers then arrive to eat the water boatmen, and backswimmers bite — a sharp sting that’s usually what makes people notice. LSU AgCenter’s guidance is direct: the treatment starts with chlorination and scrubbing the algae off the surfaces.

So don’t reach for an insecticide. Clear the algae and the food chain collapses. No algae, no boatmen; no boatmen, no backswimmers.

Mosquitoes: your pool is not the problem

This surprises people. A properly chlorinated pool does not breed mosquitoes — larvae can’t survive it. Your mosquitoes are coming from standing water around the pool, and in Florida that list is long: plant saucers, bromeliad cups, clogged gutters, rain barrels, birdbaths, tarps, the tray under the grill, a wheelbarrow, the neighbour’s untended cover.

Three things actually work, in order:

  1. Empty it. Source reduction is the top recommendation of every extension service, and it costs nothing. Tip out anything that holds water, weekly.
  2. Treat what you can’t empty — with Bti (below).
  3. Run a fan. Mosquitoes are weak fliers. Moving air over a seating area is genuinely effective and is the most underrated item on this page.

An untended green pool is the exception that proves the rule: if a pool sits unchlorinated through a winter, it can breed mosquitoes in enormous numbers. The fix there is chlorine, not larvicide.

Bti: the one product that goes where a spray can’t

Bti — Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis — is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that is lethal to mosquito, black fly and fungus gnat larvae and harmless to fish, birds, pets, bees and people. That target-specificity is the entire point: it’s why you can put it in a birdbath, a fountain or a pond, which is exactly where you can’t spray anything.

Set your expectations correctly, because this is the one honest catch. Bti kills larvae, not adults. It stops the next generation, so you won’t feel it tonight — and the most common complaint from owners isn’t that it fails, it’s that they can’t tell whether it worked. That’s inherent: you never meet the mosquitoes that were never born. It also only treats water you actually find and dose, so it does nothing about mosquitoes drifting in from next door.

The biting flies: horse, deer and yellow flies

Mosquitoes get the attention; these are the ones that actually hurt. In Florida the seasonal offender is the yellow fly, and it is the reason people abandon a perfectly good deck in May.

Nothing in the mosquito aisle touches them, and it’s worth knowing why. Bti — the one product we genuinely recommend up the page — kills mosquito and blackfly larvae in standing water. Horse and deer flies breed in damp soil and marsh margins, so there is no water for you to treat. And these flies are notoriously indifferent to the repellents that work on mosquitoes.

They hunt by sight and heat, not smell. A horse or deer fly is looking for a large, dark, warm, moving object, because that is what a host animal looks like. Penn State Extension describes the standard trap for them plainly: “The Horse Pal® trap uses a suspended black ball to mimic an animal.” That single fact explains what works here — the answer is a trap that looks like prey, not one that smells like food. It is also why a baited fly trap, very good at house flies, will not catch a single deer fly.

What works: a sticky patch on your hat

Deer flies and yellow flies go for the highest point of whatever they’re chasing, which is why they circle your head. A patch on the crown of a cap puts a sticky surface exactly where the fly was already going.

There’s no chemistry involved — it’s adhesive, and it works on the insect’s own behaviour. Owners report it in unusually countable terms, which is rare in this category: one logged roughly 30 flies on a single dog walk, another about 60 in six hours of trail work.

One caution we’d want you to know before you buy. Reading the critical reviews, the complaints are almost entirely about the adhesive rather than the idea — backing paper fused to the patch so it won’t peel, and some arriving with the glue already dried out. What makes it worth flagging is the timing: six of the ten most recent critical reviews land inside a seven-week stretch of summer 2026, and one comes from a buyer of several years who says the production has slipped. We can’t tell you that’s a bad batch rather than the ordinary crush of peak deer-fly season, when most of the year’s buying happens anyway. But check yours when it arrives, and buy the small pack first.

Two honest limits, and both are real. The first is scope: this is for deer flies and yellow flies, the ones that work your head — and owners who bought it for horse flies report it does nothing. One puts it bluntly: “our issue is horse flies, for which this product did zilch.” Horse flies don’t hunt the top of your head the way deer flies do, so the patch has nothing to exploit.

The second: it protects the person wearing it, not the yard. It does nothing for guests on your patio and nothing for your pool deck while it’s hanging in the garage. If you want an area answer, read on, because we don’t have one for you.

Why we don’t recommend a hanging biting-fly trap

The area version of this idea is the black-ball trap — a dark sphere that warms in the sun, hung under a canopy or coated in adhesive, mimicking an animal so the flies come to it instead of you. The mechanism is sound. The products are not: the only ones widely sold rate 3.6 and 3.5 stars, and the failure is consistent and specific — the sticky coating doesn’t hold. Owners describe watching a deer fly land, sit, and leave again. Some people do get results and buy one every season; plenty of others coat the ball thoroughly and catch almost nothing.

We’d rather say that than sell you a coin flip at fifty dollars. If you want to try the idea, the DIY version costs almost nothing — a dark ball on a string with an adhesive coating — and it fails the same way for the same reason.

House flies on the patio — and the mistake nearly everyone makes

Filth flies are a different animal from the biters above: house flies, blow flies and bottle flies, drawn by bins, pet waste and food rather than by you. These do respond to bait, and a baited trap works alarmingly well.

Here is the catch, and it is the whole game: this is an attractant. It does not repel flies, it calls them. Hang it near the patio and you will have more flies where you sit than before you bought it. One owner’s five-star review says it outright: “I didn’t know I had a problem with flies until this started drawing them.” The maker’s own instruction is to hang it at least 20 feet from outdoor living space — treat that as the product working as designed, not as fine print. Put it downwind, at the property line, between the flies’ source and your deck.

And it will smell. Owners are blunt — one says the odour carries thirty feet, another that it made a corner of the yard unusable. Before you take that as a mark against this particular trap: we read the critical reviews of its closest rival too, and the complaint is word-for-word the same. Protein bait smells like protein. It’s the price of the category, not a defect, and the placement rule is what makes it liveable.

Two things it won’t do: it won’t touch the biting flies above, and it won’t help with mosquitoes.

What doesn’t work — and this is most of what’s sold

Here’s where the honest answer diverges hardest from the search results.

Bug zappers. A University of Delaware study ran them for ten weeks and collected over 13,000 insects: fewer than 0.25% were mosquitoes, and more than 99.75% were beneficial insects. UF/IFAS testing in Vero Beach had one zapper kill more than 10,000 insects and eight mosquitoes. Iowa State Extension’s page is titled “Bug Zappers are Harmful, Not Helpful.” Mosquitoes hunt by CO₂ and body odour, not light — so a zapper spends the night killing moths, midges and the dragonflies that were eating your mosquitoes. At a pool it isn’t a harmless waste of money; it’s actively counterproductive.

UV light traps sold as “bug zapper alternatives” — DynaTrap and the like. These don’t electrocute, they suck insects into a basket with a fan, and the marketing leans on not being a zapper. The catch is that the attractant is the same: UV light. Independent testing puts 80–95% of the catch as non-biting moths, beetles and midges, with mosquitoes under 5%, and honeybees turn up dead in the basket. The device emits no CO₂ at all, which is the thing biting females actually track. Quieter than a zapper, same problem.

Spartan Mosquito Eradicator. The one product here with a paper trail. Peer-reviewed lab and field work concluded it “is not effective in reducing abundance”; University of Mississippi researchers found no data that salt kills mosquitoes at all. There’s an ongoing class action alleging the maker commissioned its own efficacy tests, saw them fail, and kept them quiet under NDA, and the Mississippi Attorney General warned the company over advertising that implied a state health-department endorsement. Whatever the litigation concludes, there is no published evidence the thing works.

Ultrasonic repellers. Decades of trials, no device has ever shown repellency. Rutgers’ Center for Vector Biology lists electronic repellers among products marketed “solely for economic gain.” Buy nothing here.

Citronella candles and “mosquito-repelling plants.” Also on Rutgers’ limited-value list. A citronella candle will not clear a patio. A pot of lemongrass does nothing unless you crush the leaves onto your skin, at which point you’ve made a bad repellent the hard way.

Patio spatial repellents (Thermacell and similar) are the genuine exception — metofluthrin has real trial evidence behind it. But read the manufacturer’s own instruction before you put one at a pool: Thermacell says to run a battery-powered repeller 10 feet away from a body of water, 7.5 feet for the Multi-Insect version. The EPA label explains why — the active ingredient is toxic to aquatic organisms. Your chlorinated pool contains none, so in practice this is about label compliance and drift toward natural water. Still: it’s the maker’s own setback, a screened cage concentrates the vapour in a way nobody has studied, and a broad-spectrum insecticidal vapour doesn’t distinguish a mosquito from a bee. Use it for a specific evening, at the stated distance — not as patio furniture.

If you’re in Florida, the real answer is the cage

Everything above is a tactic. In Florida the structural answer to flying insects is the screen enclosure, and which mesh you choose decides which bugs get in. Standard 18×14 screen stops mosquitoes and wasps but no-see-ums walk straight through it; 20×20 no-see-um mesh is woven tightly enough to stop them, for roughly 10–15% more.

If you’re being bitten by things you can’t see, that’s the fix — and it’s a rescreen decision, not a spray decision.

The short version

Give the wasps and bees water somewhere else. Leave the dragonflies and most of the spiders alone. If bugs are swimming in the pool, fix the algae. Empty every container that holds water, Bti the ones you can’t empty, and put a fan where you sit. Skip the zapper, the ultrasonic gadget and the citronella. And if you’re in Florida and serious about it, the mesh on your cage matters more than anything you can buy in a bottle.

What kills horse flies and yellow flies around a pool?

Nothing you spray, and nothing you put in the water. Horse, deer and yellow flies breed in damp soil and marsh margins rather than in standing water, so Bti — which works on mosquito larvae — does nothing for them, and they largely ignore the repellents that work on mosquitoes. They hunt by sight and heat, tracking a large dark warm moving shape, which is why they go for your head. What reliably works is a sticky patch worn on the crown of a cap, putting an adhesive surface exactly where the fly was already heading. Hanging black-ball area traps use the same principle and are sound in theory, but the ones sold rate 3.5 to 3.6 stars and fail on the stickiness of the coating, so we don't recommend one.

Where should I hang an outdoor fly trap?

At least 20 feet from where people sit, downwind, and ideally between the source of the flies and your patio. This matters more than which trap you buy, because a baited fly trap is an attractant — it pulls flies toward itself. Hang one near the table and you will have more flies at the table. The most common complaint about every trap in this category comes from owners who placed it too close; the second is the smell, which is unavoidable with protein bait and is the reason for the distance.

Give them water somewhere else. Wasps and yellowjackets come to a pool to drink and to carry water back to cool the nest, so in hot dry weather your pool is simply the most reliable water source around. A shallow dish or dripping spigot placed well away from the deck — 30 feet or more, ideally with something to land on — competes directly with the pool and is the single most effective thing most owners can do. Then remove the secondary draws: cover sweet drinks and food, keep the trash lidded, and rinse sticky spills off the deck. Traps work, but only if you site them at the far edge of the yard; a trap on the patio table is an invitation, because you have to lure wasps to it. Two things decide whether a trap earns its money: buy one that includes its own attractant rather than a bare plastic jar you bait yourself, and buy one that targets a single insect — a trap promising wasps and hornets and yellowjackets together tends to catch less than a single-target one, because the lures interfere with each other. Expect species-dependent results either way: the classic yellowjacket lure works best on western species, while eastern and German yellowjackets respond better to protein. And skip anything sold as a 'bee trap', which is most of the best-rated hanging traps — you never want to kill the bees. If you find a ground nest or a nest in a soffit, that is where DIY stops — yellowjacket nests can hold thousands of insects and defend aggressively, so call a professional.

Do ants damage pool pavers?

Yes, and they're the only insect around a pool that damages the deck rather than just annoying you. A paver field sits on a bed of loose sand, which is close to ideal ant habitat — dry, protected, and easy to tunnel. As a colony excavates, the spoil comes up through the joints (those little cones of fine sand between pavers are the giveaway) and what's left underneath is a void, so the pavers over it settle unevenly and edges lip up. Open joints then let weeds in, which widens them further. Spraying the surface doesn't fix it: you kill foragers while the colony carries on underneath, and a broadcast contact spray around a pool deck kills pollinators too. Use a bait, which foragers carry back to the nest. The durable fix is in the build — installers who see this repeatedly recommend an open-graded base (clean crushed stone with no fines, with a chip or HPB bedding layer instead of fine sand), because the aggregate is too large for ants to carry away, plus polymeric joint sand to lock the surface.

What are the tiny bugs floating on top of my pool that look like fleas?

Almost certainly springtails. They're about 1/16 inch, they jump when disturbed — which is what makes people call them fleas — and per UC IPM they do not bite people or pets, spread disease, or damage anything. They live in damp soil, compost, leaf litter and mulch, and you're seeing them because they fell in and drowned, sometimes in numbers that look like an oil slick across the water. Skim them off, then fix the source, which is moisture: thin out the wet mulch bed against the deck and let it dry between waterings. UC IPM specifically says insecticide sprays are generally not recommended for springtails — this is a moisture problem, not a spray problem.

Why are there mosquito-like insects swarming my pool that never bite?

Those are aquatic midges, known in Florida as 'blind mosquitoes'. UF/IFAS is explicit that this type of midge does not bite, suck blood, or carry disease. They didn't breed in your pool either — their larvae develop in the soft organic bottoms of lakes, retention ponds and settling ponds, so in most Florida subdivisions they came from the neighbourhood pond, and they peak from April through November. What draws them to your deck is your lighting: UF/IFAS notes adults are attracted to the lights around houses at night. So the lever is the lights, not a spray — and UF/IFAS warns that insecticiding adult midges is only a short-term fix that can be counter-productive if it also kills their natural predators, such as spiders. On a bad evening, run less deck lighting and let the cage spiders work.

Do bug zappers work for mosquitoes?

No, and the data on this is old and unambiguous. A University of Delaware study ran zappers for ten weeks and collected over 13,000 insects: fewer than 0.25% were mosquitoes and more than 99.75% were beneficial insects. In UF/IFAS testing in Vero Beach, one zapper killed more than 10,000 insects and eight mosquitoes. Iowa State Extension's guidance is titled 'Bug Zappers are Harmful, Not Helpful.' The reason is simple: mosquitoes find you by carbon dioxide and body odour, not by light, so a zapper mostly kills moths, beetles and midges — including the pollinators and mosquito predators you actually want. A zapper is not a neutral waste of money at a pool; it actively removes insects that were helping.

Why are there bugs swimming in my pool?

Those are almost certainly water boatmen or backswimmers, and they are a symptom, not the disease. Water boatmen eat algae, so they only move into a pool that has algae to eat. Backswimmers then arrive to eat the water boatmen — and backswimmers bite, which is usually when people notice. The fix is not an insecticide, it's chlorine: clear the algae with a proper SLAM, brush the surfaces, and clean the filter. With no algae there is no food, the boatmen leave or die, and the backswimmers follow them out. Treating the bugs while leaving the algae just means they come back.

Should I get rid of dragonflies around my pool?

No — dragonflies are one of the best things that can show up at your pool. Both the adults and their larvae are voracious predators of mosquitoes, so a yard with dragonflies has a mosquito problem being solved for free. They're at your pool because polarised light reflecting off the surface reads to them as a pond, which is also why they sometimes try to lay eggs in it; those eggs won't survive chlorinated water, so nothing comes of it. They don't sting, they don't bite people, and they don't damage anything. Leave them be. This is also the strongest practical argument against a bug zapper, which kills dragonflies efficiently while missing the mosquitoes they were eating.

How do I keep bees away from the pool without killing them?

Redirect them, don't fight them. A bee at your pool is collecting water for the hive — bees use it to cool the colony and to dilute stored honey — and once a colony has learned your pool is the water source, foragers keep returning and recruit others. Killing them doesn't stop that and, with pollinator populations under pressure, it's the wrong answer anyway. Set up a dedicated bee water station well away from the pool: a shallow dish or birdbath with stones, marbles or floating corks so they have somewhere dry to stand, kept topped up. Bees actually prefer it to a pool, because a pool gives them nowhere safe to land. Put it out early in the season if you can — it's easier to establish a new water source before they've settled on yours than to move them after.

Does Bti go in the swimming pool?

No, and it isn't needed there. A properly chlorinated pool already kills mosquito larvae — mosquitoes cannot breed in it. Bti is for the standing water AROUND the pool, which is where your mosquitoes are actually coming from: plant saucers, bromeliads, clogged gutters, rain barrels, birdbaths, the cover on the pool next door, a tarp with a puddle in it, the tray under the grill. Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) is a bacterium that is lethal to mosquito, black fly and fungus gnat larvae and harmless to fish, birds, pets, bees and people, which is why it can go in a fountain or a birdbath when a spray cannot. If your pool has gone green and unchlorinated over a winter, though, it can absolutely breed mosquitoes — the fix there is to get chlorine back in it, not to dose it with a larvicide.

What about Thermacell and other patio repellents?

The spatial repellents that use metofluthrin do have real evidence behind them, unlike zappers and ultrasonic gadgets — field trials of heat-activated volatile pyrethroids show genuine reductions in mosquito landings within their zone. There's a catch that matters specifically at a pool, and it comes from the manufacturer rather than from us: Thermacell's own guidance is to run a battery-powered repeller 10 feet away from a body of water (7.5 feet for the Multi-Insect version). The reason sits on the EPA label — the active ingredient is toxic to aquatic organisms — and a chlorinated pool has no fish or aquatic invertebrates in it, so this is mostly about label compliance and drift toward natural water. But it is the maker's own instruction, a screened enclosure concentrates the vapour in a way that isn't well studied, and the honest tension is that a broad-spectrum insecticidal vapour doesn't distinguish mosquitoes from the bees and dragonflies this guide asks you to protect. Follow the setback, don't run it in a closed cage all day, and treat it as a tool for a specific evening rather than something that lives on the patio.
