Smart Relay
Also called: relay control, on/off relay, automation relay.
A Smart Relay is what a pool automation controller falls back to when it runs another brand's equipment. A Smart Relay does exactly one thing: cut power on and off. There is no variable-speed scheduling, no colour syncing on lights, and no in-app diagnostics or error reporting.
Why it matters
It matters most on the pump. A variable-speed pump under relay control is a single-speed pump with extra steps, which is the opposite of why you bought it. The hardware plumbs together fine; the intelligence does not. A heater on a relay still heats and only loses its in-app diagnostics, and a filter has nothing to communicate, so those are the safer parts to mix. The one published way around it is Hayward's converter board, which gives Omni controllers full variable-speed control of up to three Pentair pumps. Neither Pentair nor Jandy publishes an equivalent.
