Can I use a patio heater, fire pit, pizza oven or grill under my lanai or pool cage?

Usually not, and the makers say so themselves. We read the placement rules in 35 products' own manuals and matched every sentence below to the document word for word. 12 rule out a roof or overhang, 3 allow cover only if the sides stay permanently open, and 10 say outdoors only without ruling on a covered patio.

What a pool cage changes

Most of our readers' pools sit under a screen enclosure, and a cage feels like outdoors. The one maker that defines “outdoors” for a covered space is Weber, in the Q 2800N+ manual: a partial enclosure with an overhead cover and three sidewalls counts only as long as 30% or more of the horizontal periphery of the enclosure is permanently open, and sliding doors, garage doors, windows, or screened openings are not considered as permanent openings. A screen wall is not an opening under that rule. Weber's Searwood pellet grill manual is blunter and names the place: Do not use this grill in a garage, building, breezeway, tent, lanai, screened in porch, or any other enclosed area.

Most of the rules below say combustible overhead construction. We print the maker's word and leave it there: a cage's roof is not a question we can settle for you, and your local fire code and HOA sit above every manual on this page.

One manual that disagrees with itself

EAST OAK's 50,000 BTU patio heater manual gives two clearances and two shelter rules. Its safety section says Keep flammables at least 3 feet from sides and 3 feet from top; elsewhere it says Combustible materials should not be within 48 inches of the product. One page allows a partial enclosure that is 30 percent open; the operating checklist says the heater is outdoors (outside any enclosure). Follow the stricter line of each pair.

Not under a roof or overhang (12)

The maker rules out overhead cover in so many words. Some say “combustible” construction, some say any structure at all.

What we could not verify

A quote only goes on this page if it matches the maker's document word for word. These did not make it, and we would rather say so than print a sentence we could not check.

We could not find a placement rule we could read at all for:

Questions

Can I use a patio heater, fire pit, pizza oven or grill under my lanai or pool cage?

Usually not, going by the makers' own manuals. Of 35 products whose placement rules we verified word for word, 12 rule out use under a roof or overhang outright, 3 allow a covered space only if its sides stay permanently open, and 10 say outdoors only without ruling on a covered patio. Weber's Q 2800N+ manual adds the line that matters under a pool cage: screened openings are not considered permanent openings.

Does a screen enclosure count as outdoors?

Not under the partial-enclosure rule Weber prints for the Q 2800N+: a covered space with three sidewalls counts as outdoors only "as long as 30% or more of the horizontal periphery of the enclosure is permanently open," and "sliding doors, garage doors, windows, or screened openings are not considered as permanent openings." Weber's Searwood pellet grill manual names the lanai and the screened-in porch outright as places not to use it.

Which makers say never under any structure at all?

Gozney's Arc, Arc XL, Arc Lite, Dome, Dome XL and Tread manuals: "Under no circumstances is the oven to be placed under or on top of any combustible structure" and "Do not use under any apartment or balcony or deck." Solo Stove's Pi Prime manual says "Do not use under overhead construction." Outland Living and Flame King propane fire pits say not "under overhead combustible surfaces."

What if the manual does not mention a covered patio?

Treat that as silence, not permission. Several manuals only say outdoors, or give a distance to the back and sides and say nothing about what is above. Your local fire code and your HOA or condo rules still apply, and the maker's warranty is written around its own instructions.

Checked September 26, 2026. Manuals change without notice; the link on each row is the document we read. For the gear itself, see the fire and heat and grills and pizza ovens showdowns, and for what the warranty covers, warranties.
